It seems to me there are a lot of people who value dogs higher than they do people and treat them better ?

Do you agree ? Do you do this ?

Seriously, how ridiculous 🙄

I like cats more than dogs, and would still save a dog over a friend, work colleague or stranger too. No immediate family, but would definitely save my cats over my partner, not sure about animals that I don’t know.

That seems difficult for you to understand and accept. Quite frankly, I couldn’t care less.

FrangipaniBlue · 14/10/2022 09:58

Though if we could have an island for all the dog people to go to, I'd gladly send them off there, and see how they cope when they realise humans are the only ones who can treat them in hospital, or cut their hair, or fix their car.

You do understand that owning a dog doesn't preclude a person from accessing these things, right?

tvluv · 14/10/2022 07:52

So if you had the choice to save the life of a stranger or your dog, which would you save ?

Definitely my dog!!!!

Rutland2022 · 14/10/2022 10:01

Not dogs, but I put cats and horses before most people. I don’t like people very much (family excepted!).

LickThis · 14/10/2022 08:52

@OoooohMatron other people's opinions are just as valid as yours , to just reply 'how ridiculous ' with an eye roll is very dismissive
I'd choose my pet over some people I know for reasons only known to me

I apologise I shouldn't have said it's ridiculous. I don't agree but you feel how yiu feel.

MrsNowAndAlways · 14/10/2022 10:05

Absolutely not. If my house was on fire, the pets are going to be the last thing on my mind. Getting my children out is my top priority, the pets can find their own way, but I'm not risking my like to get them out.

On a less extreme note, I let people sit on my sofa, the dog does not. I feed people proper food, the dog eats dog food. And so on.

You'd save an animal over your partner? Sorry but you need help (or a new partner). That is seriously nothing to be proud of.

AnApparitionQuipped · 14/10/2022 10:26

Seriously, how ridiculous

@OoooohMatron It isn't ridiculous. Human lives are not inherently more valuable than animal lives.

I would save those people and animals who are important to me as a priority.

After that, or if no person or animal known to me was in danger, my decision would be purely pragmatic and I would aim for whoever or whatever I was most likely to be able to rescue successfully and without endangering myself.

NotTheMrMenAgain · 14/10/2022 10:26

My dog is family. You’re damn right I’d save her first, before a random stranger. I don’t care if dog-haters think that’s weird or sick!

XmasElf10 · 14/10/2022 10:29

I love my dog and my family. I like other dogs, animals and people. I’d save my family before I saved my dog. I’d possibly save my dog before saving a random person. If it was a random dog or a random person I’d probably save the person… maybe, definitely if it was a kid.

XmasElf10 · 14/10/2022 10:37

I grew up with a black lab that I loved very very much. I also had grandparents who I loved I guess as much as you love slightly grumpy old people who buy you stuff you don’t want at Xmas and ask you stupid questions about school. My dog died long before my gran did. I think of my dog very often. I miss him. He was wonderful and my confident and my friend. I don’t feel one way or another about my gran (or my Nan or my grandad). They didn’t leave a hole in my life.

Now I have another dog. He’s funny. He talks (in his body language) and grumps and demands. He is also king and loving and a proper comic. When he is gone he’ll leave a big hole in my life and that of my wider family who see him daily. To me his life is more important than that of a random stranger.

OK good for you. I honestly cannot be arsed to argue with people who value the life of an animal over a human. I love animals but this concept is alien to me and I can't be bothered to try to understand people like you.

OoooohMatron · 14/10/2022 07:58

my dog I think.
I might put a child before my dog because my dog is old and hasn't got long left anyway.
I don't think I'm the kind of person to be involved with a stranger anyway. Once an old man fell over when I was about 14, and I tried to help him up but it turned out he was drunk and I regretted coming over and when someone else came over I left.

what kind of situation are you on about?

If I saw a man lying in the road or something I'd think scam, possibly trying to lure someone over, if I saw a dog or a child I would do something.

I hate people they are shit. My dog is there every day. I also hate the idea of 'replacing him' when he dies. so that's it.

People are scummy (myself included) but dogs are loyal.

definitelynotlistening · 14/10/2022 10:53

Imagine the suffering you would inflict on so many people if you saved your dig over a person.

AuntieMarys · 14/10/2022 10:57

No. Dogs are ridiculously infantalised these days.

Dotjones · 14/10/2022 11:00

I don't like dogs so try to avoid them as much as possible, I wouldn't make any effort at all with them.

As for the people who say they'd save an animal over a person, I get where they are coming from. Personally I wouldn't save an animal over a human, but I would certainly prioritise my own possessions over saving a stranger, and of course pets are possessions in the eyes of the law.

CoorieIn · 14/10/2022 11:08

I would save my children, husband and then my dogs in say the event of a fire.

My gut would be to save my dog if it was a complete stranger. My brain would be to save whoever I could without endangering myself.

I would very much doubt I would ever be in a situation where it was as easy to save my dog vs a stranger buy could only save one 🤷‍♀️

I wouldn't risk my children being without their mother for anyone.

iamnotacatt · 14/10/2022 11:51

Everyone saying they would save a dog over a human has probably never been in the situation where they had to save a human (thankfully for them)

iamnotacatt · 14/10/2022 11:52

I also think people who would put a dogs life ahead of a humans life tend to be not very nice people.. they like dogs because they have more control over them than they do humans

iamnotacatt · 14/10/2022 11:55

girlmom21 · 14/10/2022 08:23

If your cat/dog dies the only person that is sad is you. Yes it's upsetting but honestly a pet can be replaced in time and you would love the new pet just as much. If a person dies they leave children, parents, lifelong friends etc who's lives are affected by grief that never fully goes away.

All of this is untrue.

Does a dog of a large family then take precedent over an elderly person who has no family left?

If my dog died my whole family would be gutted.

Depends whether or not you value a life more based on how many people know them or not

AnApparitionQuipped · 14/10/2022 12:00

definitelynotlistening · 14/10/2022 10:53

Imagine the suffering you would inflict on so many people if you saved your dig over a person.

It might be that by leaving them to die, you were alleviating suffering for many - if the person happened to be, say, a trafficker or a drugs baron or a sex offender or a perpetrator any of the different ways in which humans can cause suffering to one another.

Anydaynowonewouldhope · 14/10/2022 12:05

Who knows what I’d do in the moment - but my thinking response is I would save the life of a child or an adult before my dog but would save my dog before an elderly person 🤷‍♀️

definitely always a child.

but say an abusive man over my dog? My dog wins every time

the pain of my dog passing will be immense for me and I wish to delay that

Foolsandtheirmoney · 14/10/2022 12:06

I like my dogs more than strangers, I know my dogs I don't know Jeff at the park, he could be a right bastard for all I know. I don't really see a comparison between how I treat the dogs and treat 'people'. I mean it depends on the people. I'm don't treat anyone badly, I'm always polite blah blah but I'd give a piece of chicken to the dogs sooner than I'd give a piece of chicken to a stranger.

DeadbeatYoda · 14/10/2022 12:06

I feel strongly that dogs are just too good for humans; so loyal, so willing to please, so loving. It breaks my heart when I hear of them being mistreated or neglected.
