Do you like dogs more than people and treat them better than people ?

It seems to me there are a lot of people who value dogs higher than they do people and treat them better ?

Do you agree ? Do you do this ?

Having read a Mumsnet thread a few years ago, where one poster claimed she loved her dog as much as if not more than her own children, nothing surprises me anymore.
Those poor children. Lower in the pecking order than a bloody dog.

The dog loons on here are something else.

Last year one woman posted that her DH’s 14yo dog, who he has before he met her, is such hard work when she’s on maternity leave with a baby. It shits itself, needs 3 long walks a day and barks all the time - she had a newborn, was knackered and struggling to get her DS to sleep with the dog in the house. She sounded broken and she wanted the dog to be rehomed but her arsehole OH said no.

Well by MN’s reaction you think she’d have gone round murder f puppies.
she got called:

  • A cunt
  • a dog killer
  • a fucking arsehole
  • told to ‘move out of the dog’s house, it’s more hers than yours she was there first’
  • I’ll prepared for motherhood because she didn’t like picking dog shit off the kitchen floor
it was vile. These dog lovers can be right nasty fuckers to their fellow human
Allthestarsabovemyhead · 14/10/2022 21:39

Dog have a short life expectancy. I love my dog. I have thought about it I had to save a stranger or a dog who would I pick. Typically , the stranger would outlive an animal anyway. However if it was a really elderly person I would save my dog. How can anyone save their pet when it would live for a few more years than a human who would live for decades?

People need to rehome their dogs for many reasons. I really hate the vitriol and judgement aimed at people who have tried everything and need to find a home for their dog. It is not easy, but you get people saying you never deserved a dog to start with if you are considering rehoming. Stuff like "I would live on the streets before I give up my dog"... I don't think they would.

I am a dog lover, but I know people and their situations are complex too.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 14/10/2022 21:44

Yes, I actually think rehoming is often the most sensible idea than letting a dog live with a family who cannot take care of it

XelaM · 14/10/2022 21:47

Well, rehoming a 14-year-old dog is horrible! Who do you think will adopt a 14-year-old dog? The MN dog-haters are the loons.

I have a tiny toy breed dog and I sometimes see kids and crazy (probably) MNetters screaming or crossing the road when we walk on a pavement (my dog is on the lead sniffing the ground and doesn't even acknowledge their presence). I guess it's the new thing of teaching kids to be anxious of everything.

flowertoday · 14/10/2022 21:49

I absolutely love dogs, I also love cats and horses. Generally speaking I do prefer many dogs to people, I think Generally speaking dogs are easier to understand than the average human. I admit though that it would be hard to choose a dog over a human though .... That is because I am a human I guess.

Surely everything that is going wrong with the planet and environment boils down to humans pig headed and incorrect assumption that they are superior to other species Inferior more like, we are selfish, short sighted and stupid as a race - our behaviours are destructive and often repellant on a collective level . Perhaps this is why dogs seem better ?

AllotPlot · 14/10/2022 21:49

I love my dog, he's family. I prefer his company to numerous other people's company but I don't treat him better than people, I treat everyone with respect until they don't deserve it.

I did not see the thread the PP mentioned, but it sounds difficult... 14 year old dog that has been in the life of the DH for 14 years. Now kids have arrived and mum can't cope.
I hope some compromise was reached tbh.

I follow a lot of rescue pages, and pretty much all the elderly dogs up for rehoming need to be because their owner has died or gone into residential care. Is so sad.

2twotired · 14/10/2022 21:51

I much prefer my dogs to people and would choose them everytime, I have autism and they help me so much, no judgement, trained to do certain things and just the best.

roarfeckingroarr · 14/10/2022 21:57

I would save my dog over another adult I didn't know, unless that person was a mother of a child. I would save a child first.

RincewindsHat · 14/10/2022 21:57

I like my dogs better than most people. They're family members and are treated as such, and are given what non-animal people would probably call "human status" because I love them dearly and they're very precious to me.

My life, my animals, my choice. It's harming exactly nobody.

You'd be better off asking why people give love and support to evil humans who cause hurt, pain, and distress to other people and animals, it's a much more interesting question with actual moral implications.

Dogs do contribute to society actual;
Guide dogs
Sniffer dogs
Rescue dogs

Cats are usual shite though!

I laughed. Cats are shite. They are too independent.
There have been people on this this thread saying that dog owners just want something to dominate. That is how cats see humans 😁

Would the dog hating people find themselves foot deep in rubble after an earthquake, and tell the rescue dog finding them to fuck off? Shoo it away... rather a person found them.
Or is that too bizarre a hypothetical situation? Much like the "puppy or baby" ones on this thread.

Sparklingbrook · 14/10/2022 22:23

If we get an earthquake in Worcestershire that reduced my house to rubble the dog could sniff me out and the humans could do the rest. But I think they use those heat detecting gizmos for that anyway. No danger of an avalanche so I’ll never get the St Bernard with the barrel ☹️😂

KimberleyClark · 14/10/2022 22:28

I bloody love dogs though we do not currently own one. I like some dogs better than some people. I am a devoted auntie to DB’s black lab - beautiful dog with the sweetest personality.

People actually stand and scream at your dog?

The 14yo dog was making the OP’s life unliveable. All very well for you to say ‘poor dog’ but that was her life every day and it’s much crueller to let your DP and child love through it then get the dog taken elsewhere.

whatapity · 14/10/2022 22:43

If all the harmless law abiding people were sacrificed at birth in favour of puppies, the contribution they would have otherwise have made to the world would soon be apparant.

I'm sure it would become apparent if all law abiding people were sacrificed in favour of puppies, but I think you've missed the point...

I love dogs and they are undeniably of great value in rescues. But only because they've been trained and are handled by a person. If I was in need of rescue, I'd rather have a human being who could use tools and equipment, administer even basic first aid and talk to me than a dog who just happened by with its good sense of smell, but no human to guide it.

Disclaimer here.. I am not sure of the proper term... Indian? Pakistani? I don't know... but seems to be a cultural thing amongst them to be freaked out by dogs. I do often see a child stand and scream blue murder and get whisked away by a parent.. just because I walked past with my dog.

Happy families don’t have a pecking order. We’re all very secure. We make sure everyone gets their needs met and as many wants met as possible, which is usually everything, us, 2 kids and the dogs. Our kids know we’d do for anything for them, they also know the same applies to the dogs and they wouldn’t have it any other way. They’d never be jealous of a dog, I dong think they’ve ever felt jealous of anyone, they’re not like that.

Same here

I like dogs but no, I don't value them more than people. A human life is worth more than an animal one.

In your opinion 🙄

Carlycat · 15/10/2022 00:18

tvluv · 14/10/2022 08:29

I feel uncomfortable with the concept of loving dogs more than people.

It's like you all like some massive power and someone who can't answer back to you. With a dog, you're in charge. They're there, for you basically. It's weird to me if you like that more than a more complex relationship with a human. You're all a doggie really has. They rely on you completely. And that's the relationship you love the most in your life ? That's weird to me.

I have a dog by the way and adore her. But I wouldn't put it on parr with human relationships. It's different. And not above human relationships.

Me / her family are her entire world. Whereas in human relationships that's obviously not the case.

You're entitled to your opinion. Doesn't mean it's correct

Yes they do and those dogs are incredible, but let's not forget they have been trained to do all that by incredible humans.
