To have been using the same mascara since May?

Just bought some new mascara after my one started drying out. And it actually occurred to me that I have been using it since May…

Im quite surprised at myself, I just hadn’t realised how long I had had it…

I just keep thinking of the bacteria that must have been on it😱

Tell me I’m not alone here, what’s the longest you have kept mascara or any makeup for?

Mine sit unused for months as I stopped wearing during the day which I highly recommend. I've got black lashes though, so I suppose that makes a difference. I throw more or less full once out after about six months as they dry/clog even if they've only been used once or twice.

TattiePants · 13/10/2022 21:01

Mascara is the only make up that I stick reasonably close to the recommended time as I have sensitive eyes and I find it goes flaky as it dries out. I still have the concealer and powder from my wedding 17 years ago and I have lipsticks that are 20+ years old.

Laiste · 13/10/2022 21:03

I have a lipstick from 1987 !!

It's a Miss Selfridge (white case, pink writing) one called Boy Gorgeous 😊

(i don't use it obvs.)(i didn't use it more than a couple of times because it was so bright!)

Bookaholic73 · 13/10/2022 21:04

Mine is so old I can’t remember when I bought it

CountZacular · 13/10/2022 21:05

I don’t use my often and think it’s from 2019? Fine either way.

I do know you are supposed to get rid of used mascara after 6 months and I think unused after 2 years(?), but I didn’t know you were ever supposed to get rid of eyeshadow! Is that true? I have some amazing discontinued palettes (with some colours still untouched) and I’d hate the idea that they should be in the bin!

scrivette · 13/10/2022 21:09

Some of my makeup is older than my DC, about 12 years old.

DisappointinglyFlatulent · 13/10/2022 21:10

How very peculiar that you would even think of this. You do post some very odd stuff OP.

ShinyMe · 13/10/2022 21:12

I own one mascara that I remember buying in 2005. Are you not supposed to keep them? To be fair, I only use it maybe once a year, and now I think about it, I can't remember when I last used it.

GrannyAchingsShepherdsHut · 13/10/2022 21:12

Fuck me, I've still got makeup I used at senior school - I'm 38!!

I've got a brown mascara I rarely use that's probably 10 yrs old.

mrsfeatherbottom · 13/10/2022 21:20

I only recently threw out a lovely Benefit highlighter that I bought on my honeymoon - in 2005!

May is practically brand new.

FirewomanSam · 13/10/2022 21:23

Eh? May? As in, 5 months ago May? How is that old?!

I throw mine out when it dries out or if I have had an eye infection but otherwise I don’t keep track!

EmmaC78 · 13/10/2022 21:26

I use mine for years. I hardly ever wear make up so all of it, not just the mascara, is years old.

Prometheus · 13/10/2022 21:31

I’m still using some of the make up
I got from a department store counter when I got married….in 2006.

Fabuleuse · 13/10/2022 21:31

A mascara bought in May is still a brand new mascara, imo. I'd say mine is quite new. I bought it in Feb 2020 (obviously then didn't get used for a long time).

pinkpirlie · 13/10/2022 21:33

Oh my gosh, years and years.
I have an eye shadow I bought the day of my year 11 prom in 1999 and I still use it.

SirChenjins · 13/10/2022 21:38

May as in May this year? Crikey, that’s practically brand new. I have a Bourjois blusher I use every day - that’s 3 years old - and eye shadows that are older than that. So far the skin on my face has remained intact.

ClafoutisSurprise · 13/10/2022 21:39

I have some Clinique Almost Makeup foundation still - and they discontinued that over 10 years ago! There’s so little left that I wouldn’t use it because I’m in denial about it being over. It was really the only foundation I’ve ever liked. I did use it on special occasions until relatively recently, though, and suffered no ill effects.

wackamole · 13/10/2022 21:40

The advice I've always heard (from the cosmetics industry, no doubt) is change every six months. Which I assume means once every 1-3 years. If it dries out you can add a little saline solution or baby oil, just make sure it's not contaminated. Or submerge the tube, tightly closed, in just-below-boiling water for three minutes.

CraigDavid · 13/10/2022 21:43

You truly live on the edge OP.

VioletCharlotte · 13/10/2022 21:51

My friend let slip that she still has make up from the 80's!

Kite22 · 13/10/2022 21:53

May which year ?

Chloefairydust · 13/10/2022 22:32

I use my powders and foundation until it runs out but always thought I should be changing my mascara regularly, totally forgot however and when I saw it was all dry and crusty I realised I had had it and been using it every day for months. I’m surprised I didn’t get pink eye 😱

BogRollBOGOF · 13/10/2022 22:38

I haven't worn make-up since April, and probably about 4-5 times in the past 3 years. Following the "advice" would make it pretty much single use!

I have binned the eyeshadow from 1993, but mainly because there was no sign of that shade of blue rushing back into fashion.

If it's since 2008, it's new.

Tsort · 13/10/2022 22:40

You’re really just tossing out your mascara every few months? Seriously?

JustBkind · 13/10/2022 22:44

I keep it until it stops performing the way I want it to, like when it starts clumping and blotting and generally not looking great…that’s usually a year or so down the line!! Never had an eye infection!
