It’s agony! Like being sliced with razors every time I swallow. Genuinely scared whenever I cough because it’s so painful. Have taken painkillers. What else can I do to make it feel better?

Agree with gargling and drinking soluble aspirin.

Butter and sugar creamed together and vinegar mixed in. Have a tablespoon of it. I find it helps sooth and cure a sore throat.

@tenbob AFAIK marshmallow root is a traditional remedy for sore throats & coughs... IDK how many brands of marshmallow sweets would include real marshmallow root these days though.

Yes it is. It's sold in Holland and Barrett along side the cough and throat remedies. Apparently it helps to sooth the throat or something along those lines. The bee propolis throat sweets are also really good too. Providing you aren't allergic to bees of course. They taste bloody amazing too!!

Hydrogen peroxide mixed with water gargled. Sounds dangerous but it brings up all the infection, I think it's an antiseptic!

It oxidises the bacteria so will work if it's an infection rather than a virus.

We get the throat spray stuff which anaesthetises whatever it comes into contact with.

Gargle soluble paracetamol. Really takes the edge off.

@MayISuggestSomeThickCutSteakChipsToGoWithThat I bloody love the bee propolis lozenges, they are very soothing but I'm not sure they'd be enough for a really sharp sore throat. I didn't know H&B sold real marshmallow sweets, will have to look next time I'm going past.

This is hard to bear, but dabbing salt directly onto your tonsils and trying not to swallow it away for as long as you can really helps. It numbs the throat, tastes disgusting (temporarily let's you forget about the pain), may make you gag (ditto), but it is very effective. Sea salt is best but any will do. Use the end of a chopstick, slightly moistened and dipped in the salt.

Also avoid spicy, sweet, fried, 'hot' food, like crisps and sweets and curries. A cold beer is good! (This is related to traditional Chinese medicine).

But yeah, the throat sprays are pretty effective, as is TCP or salt water.
