We're currently in dispute with our employer over a 2.5% pay offer. Others in our sector have won 9%

Just wondered what others are getting / requesting

I'm a teacher.. so no

SquigglePigs · 11/10/2022 22:21

5.2% from next month. More junior staff got 6-7%, more senior staff got 3-4%. Private sector.

They absolutely are allowed!

They can't be forced and can say no if asked.

Some of my colleagues covered for me last week which I was pissed off about but it was their choice

Senior managers have been covering (and making an absolute shit show of it!)

As I understand it if a class teacher is on strike then no one should be covering their lessons.

I’m in a primary school an so for us that means that if a teacher is on strike then that class don’t come in.

Seems I was wrong. I’m sure that’s what I was told last time.

How would they know not to come in? We don't have to tell anyone we're in a union or if we're striking

The reality is some families get wind and keep kids off, some come in and are lumped in with anyone who will have them

Some Heads etc will take big groups in the hall or outside

I get the feeling that for teachers they want to make you feel as much of a pain in the arse as they can.
If you strike children miss a day of school, parents have to take a day off, everyone hates striking teachers, someone will have to cover your class….

Experienced senior social worker. My wage isn't worth much more now than it was when I was newly qualified.

I live in an area with extremely high house prices in comparison to local wages. Someone has set up a foodbank for the council staff to access in the staff break room.

Theres such a shortage of people to do what were previously NMW jobs locally that those jobs are now paying almost the same p/h as highly qualified professional roles.

People are leaving what were previously reasonably well paid jobs in droves to go and pull pints or clean holiday lodges.

myexisawanker · 11/10/2022 22:31

Not for about 8 years. Possibly more.
Getting silly now tbh.

WhatsitWiggle · 11/10/2022 22:36

2% in April when the company-wide pay review was held. We got a 5% pay cut in 2020 (after a 2% pay rise in January) when Covid hit and no pay review in 2021. I then got another 2% rise in July when they reviewed certain salaries as being out of line in each department. So essentially I'm back to my 2020 salary.

A new teacher earns £2k more than a store assistant in Aldi (assuming 8 hours a day, 5 days a week). A new nurse earns £2k less than Aldi staff. Not a shred of disrespect to Aldi staff but surely a teacher or nurse should earn more.

blebbleb · 11/10/2022 22:55

Just under 2k payrise i April. Works out to les than 5%

justhadit · 11/10/2022 23:03

Local Government in a home county so very expensive housing. Barely any pay rises since 2008 then 3% this year , was quite excited about that until now. Compared to CPI would need a 25% pay rise to bring back parity.
Now they cant recruit or retain.

babyyodaxmas · 12/10/2022 04:34

NHS senior management 4.5% backdated to April

Literaturemakeslifebetter · 12/10/2022 05:32

Teaching, we got 5% in 2020 and the union has now asked for 20% and been offered 8%. Union has turned it down as it's not enough to keep up with inflation so I am hoping we end up with 12%. Not the UK. Feel very lucky to have such a strong union which we pay 700 pounds a year to be a member of, worth it though- strength in numbers is what I have learned. Had no idea how powerful unions can be till I was in a strong one.

Katkincake · 12/10/2022 07:04

Been offered 2%, most we’ve had in years (public sector, England wide govt body). Our main unions are balloting for strike action.

woohoowoohoo · 12/10/2022 07:04

We got asked if we will be on strike - should I not be saying ?

Olivetreebutter · 12/10/2022 07:10

2.5% in August, with a one off £1000 payment in July as a 'thank you' for hardwork during Covid etc.
Academic support services.

Theredjellybean · 12/10/2022 07:10

Private sector for one job.. outstanding end of year rating got me 3% which was wiped out by ni hike at the time.so effectively nothing.
GP for private company providing NHS services as second job ..no payrise for 7 yrs

NorthStarRising · 12/10/2022 07:28

Supply teacher, no pay rise in nine years. No, I don’t cover classes where the teacher is on strike. Yes, some schools do ask for cover.

PurplePastaBake · 12/10/2022 07:38

Those of us who are salary paid received 2-4% in June depending on work level. It’s currently being pushed through an early review due to the financial situation with another pay rise expected by the end of the month.

Hourly paid colleagues have been given a second pay rise this month with another expected in February. It would usually be reviewed every August.

They can ask - you don't need ro tell them! Up to them to figure out who is in on the day

Tbh my employer has been good about not asking. I'm more pissed off with colleagues who willingly covered for me. The payrise will benefit them if we win one

I’m sure they’ll be pissed off that they’ll be covering your work whilst you’re on strike.

Whether you go on strike or not is your choice. And the same to your colleagues. But you seem to think that their choice shouldn’t be respected?

You make some assumptions there.

One is in a different union (who are balloting for strike action this week) she said she fully supported the strike and that she would be voting to with her union

Second said he wanted to strike but couldn't afford to and again, was apparently fully supportive of strike action and desperately wants a pay rise.
