I’m not one for nails and heels etc but I do want to look my age rather than looking 10 years older than I am.

What were your “game changers”?

vitamins? Skin care? Hair care … what product or habit changed how you look and feel for the better?

-Neatly filed nails, coat of clear nail polish.
-Maintain good hair, rather than have good hair only after an obvious cut

  • hair serum to keep is moisturised
-use decent night cream with vitamin c if you can -regular exfoliation to slough off dead skin cells -wear sunscreen every day - face, neck, hands -Neutral make-up if any and just a slick of lipgloss looks nice. -Nicely shaped brows -decent fitted clothes -get enough sleep -don’t smoke -exercise to firm up and lose excess weight I’d you can to feel a bit lighter and help increase mobility

Most of these are very minor things and not needed daily.

Quincythequince · 08/10/2022 18:17

Sorry. No idea why it posted like that.

Personally for me with my hair type (very frizzy), straightening my hair makes all the difference and helps me look put together. I can’t describe the difference even if I’m wearing plain clothes and no makeup.

I take vitamin D and iron which also helped my hair and complexion but deffo speak to a doctor first.

Speak to a dr about what? Not being frumpy?

Does it really matter how old you look? The main thing is to be healthy.

Well it clearly matters to her, so she’s asking.
Feel free to just look the way you naturally look and be healthy if that’s all you want. Others want more.

Mybackteeth · 08/10/2022 18:26

Got rid of my leggings
Microbladed my eyebrows
Eyelash extensions every month
Visit to the nail salon every 3 weeks
Just spend a load with Pretty Little Thing after throwing out all my leggings and raggedy school-run tops
Gym 3 times a week

YourLipsMyLips · 08/10/2022 18:29

Tummy tuck
Lost 3 stone
Botox
Took better care of my teeth
Found a hairdresser who does lovely balayage for reasonable price
Do my gel nails myself so nails look neat
Watched a load of online eye make up videos so am more confident with different looks now

Losing weight is an absolute game changer for me.
I can wear the clothes I want to when I'm slim.
Other more minor things:

New clothes (I love secondhand but you can end up looking worn out!) including a few on trend things. I buy good quality and sell it on Vinted when I'm bored.
Micro blading brows
Shorter hair (less messy looking)
Professionally done nails.

OnAStarryNight · 08/10/2022 18:32

I find the word frumpy interesting. I'm not sure that looking smart and put together is directly linked to weight. I know several people who have lost weight through diet and exercise and now look much older, especially as they have lost weight around their face. Obviously this is personal choice.

Things that make me feel better about myself are -

Regular hair cut and colour and investing in decent shampoo, no routes, no frizz and definitely styled or straightened every day.
Decent makeup, good tinted moisturiser with SPF, good mascara etc. and perfume.
Invest in well fitting clothes where you can mix and match a lot, at this time of year a smart coat can do wonders. The same for a decent leather handbag and boots that go with everything.
For me the rest is about my mood. Call me shallow but having my hair and nails done makes me feel better in myself, and I think that shows on the outside too!

Like I said, none of these things are directly related to weight, but if you would feel better for being a bit more lean, maybe upping your steps every day might be a good place to start?

INeverSawAPurpleCow · 08/10/2022 18:33

I think a good haircut works wonders. You don't have to go the whole hog of colouring/straightening whatever, but a decent cut and blowdry makes anyone look as though they take care of themselves.

  • roots. Sorry typing to fast there!
OnAStarryNight · 08/10/2022 18:35
  • too. I'm just going to give up now!
washingbasketqueen · 08/10/2022 18:37

Lost weight, teeth whitening, Botox, lots of vitamins (c, d) , biotin, evening primrose, collagen, milk thistle and cod liver. I also exercise 3 times per week. Get my gel nails done every 3 weeks. Monthly facials. Dye my own hair monthly. Have a good skincare routine with retinol, hyleronic acid, vitamin c etc.

I'm 40 now and feel and look better now then I did 10 years ago.

loottie · 08/10/2022 18:39

I’d never say this out loud because it would be boastful but I really did transform myself about 10 years ago (45 ish). Before that I was a kind of frump, even in my teens.

Losing weight is the main thing. I think you can make excuses about what it does to your skin but honestly losing weight makes everybody look better. I really am into body positivity and I’m not thin but losing weight made a huge difference to my overall look as well as making clothes look better on me (and health as well of course).

Good skin care. I thought skin care was an expensive con until I was about 42. Then I started reading about it and tried a proper routine but with affordable products (eg.The Ordinary) When I look back at photos it’s really obvious when I started doing this. My skin is noticeably better.

Exercising. There is no way around it. Exercising is pretty essential not only for mental and physical health but for the way you look. I did find out that it’s not the key to losing weight though.

Clothes. Investing some time in working out what clothes really suit me and about trends. Not in a fashion victim way but just to look a little less frumpy. I don’t read womens’ magazines but there are a number of bloggers/influencers who are good for women of a certain age/type. I used to be totally uninterested but now I quite like spending a little time thinking about what I wear and I don’t spend any more money at all, just put more thought into it.

It’s really possible to do without spending extra money and without getting self obsessed.

What do you do/use in terms of skincare @DickDarstedly ?

Fedupwithmondays · 08/10/2022 18:43

Lost weight, excerise, decent hair cut and botox

RosesAndHellebores · 08/10/2022 18:47

Hair
Teeth
Have your colours done
Clothes that fit, a slip works wonders under a dress
No to puffa/padded coats
Comfortable shoes can be current
Walk tall
Check lengths/trouser styles are current
Do not wear elasticated waists or too much polyester
Keep handbags current

Eeksteek · 08/10/2022 18:53

@NotAHouse ha ha! Not just me then.

the hair and the nails and the heels et al look lovely. I’m absolutely not dissing them. They just take more effort that I’m prepared to make for something I can’t even see! I’d love to swan around looking like Kate. But it takes three hours of primping, no pizza and sore feet. I’d rather look like me and have the pizza and the three hours in bed.

And fashion. WTAF has happened to fashion? It’s ludicrous. The pink ruffles of the summer I would have laughed at, and flatly refused to wear, at age 7. And if the Rod, Jane and Freddy-dressed-up-as-Bungle I keep seeing on MN ads is this years winter must have, it can fuck off. I’d rather look mumsy. With pockets.

NotQuiteUsual · 08/10/2022 18:54

I get told I look young. I absolutely don't. But I dress young without looking like I'm trying to look young iyswim. I have bright unnatural dyed hair. Very artsy and unique clothes. But I spend a lot of time and effort finding clothes I love, fit well and flatter, but play into some current trends. My wardrobe has a colour palette so everything goes with everything effortlessly. Of course dressing like a fashion student and a charity shop had a head on collision isn't for everyone. But the principles are the same.

Figure out your flattering colours and stick to them. Take some things from current trends and others from timeless classics. Invest your time finding what cuts are for you. Wear things because you love how you feel in them as much as how you look. Carry yourself with confidence and love.

Catonamountain · 08/10/2022 19:01

For the love of God can someone explain cc cream? to me and stick up a link to a decent one, I'd be so grateful!

MoltenLasagne · 08/10/2022 19:02

I am currently in frump stage - I saw a photo of myself the other day and I looked like I'd aged a decade in 2 years (thanks pregnancy).

Key thing for me is lack of exercise has massively impacted my posture, I just look slumped which just adds to how exhausted I look. Add on that all my clothes are at least 3 years old and I just look tired even wearing an outfit that used to make me look fab.

So I guess to reverse it I'll have to get consistent sleep, start exercising again, in particular core strength, and then eventually get some newer clothes.

ShatParp · 08/10/2022 19:11

Here in slumped over solidarity! I keep getting told Pilates is the key?!

ShatParp · 08/10/2022 19:13

Bloody button press fail, that was aimed @MoltenLasagne

TokyoSushi · 08/10/2022 19:14

Started running, everything just started to look better as a result.

MoggyP · 08/10/2022 19:15

a) ditch the idea of "looking your age" - it's a limiting myth

b) what excited you in the past, what were your favourite clothes, the ones that made you walk taller and feel terrific?

c) are you happy with your size?
