To have told DH off for driving while wearing his work lanyard

this was yesterday! We have it drilled into us where I work that we should not wear our lanyards while driving as it’s dangerous, especially if you crash and the airbag is activated. DH says I’m “overreacting” and says his work don’t tell him anything like this. Aibu to have told him off and made him take the lanyard off?

The same might apply to a large chunky statement necklace but I've not heard to take those off before driving

Yes, or a badge, or a brooch or large buttons on a jumper or jacket.

Our health and safety team at work drill it into us. If you crash with a lanyard with a hard plastic case around the id card, it can cause internal bleeding/injury if the airbag pushes it into you

If you are in a crash, surely anything in the car or on your person could be pushed into you. I don’t understand why lanyards are a particular danger. I have also never heard of this and your workplace seem to be babying you all.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 08/10/2022 10:43

YANBU to think it may be a safety hazard.

YABVU to talk to him like he's a naughty little boy.

If my DH spoke to me like that you speak to your DH, I'd be wearing half a dozen fucking lanyards when I was driving, just to piss him off.

Revolvingwhore · 08/10/2022 10:43

I bet he loves you rushing home to brief him on the latest musings of your health and safety team.

RichardMarxisinnocent · 08/10/2022 10:44

I've also never heard of this. If it's so dangerous why don't all employers warn people? That said, I work in a hospital where its only really non clinical people who work away from clinical area who wear lanyards, moat other people use badge holders which they clip to their clothes.

forevercooking · 08/10/2022 10:44

My husband is a bus driver, it's his job to drive with his on

CheezePleeze · 08/10/2022 10:44

Has anyone 'told off' the 1000s of NHS staff who drive around with their lanyards on?

It doesn't sound as though they've got the memo.

glamourousindierockandroll · 08/10/2022 10:44

It seems a very very odd thing for your health and safety thing to "drill into" you. A passing comment maybe but anything beyond that is weird.

PrincessButtercupToo · 08/10/2022 10:44

Your health and safety team sound a bit mental if this is what they are “drilling into” you.

cinnabongene · 08/10/2022 10:46

You’ve really had this drilled into you by your work? How bizarre. I’d love to know the stats on death by strangulation from a lanyard following a car crash. Don’t most people shove their lanyard in a pocket or bag and produce it as needed?

I don’t do this! It was only this 1 thing that I told him about

What about phones carried in top pockets?

user1471434829 · 08/10/2022 10:46

You sound like a complete nutter, the risk is absolutely tiny and he can make his own decisions.

CheezePleeze · 08/10/2022 10:46

Has anyone told the Police it's therefore dangerous to drive whilst wearing their radios? 🤔

AndYouCanBuggerOffAsWell · 08/10/2022 10:46

I wear mine whilst driving
If I have an accident and die they can inform my kids who will then probably raid my safe and bugger off to the Maldives for 6 months
Win win situation there!

Sequinanddiamonds · 08/10/2022 10:48

I didn’t tell him off like a baby ffs! I just reminded him to take it off and then told him again when he still didn’t

My husband drives with two sharpened pencils up his nose and this thread is now making me wonder if that could be dangerous toi.

Pandor · 08/10/2022 10:48

Of course it is unreasonable to “tell off” an adult for doing something that carries an (statistically unlikely) risk of injury to themselves. Show him articles if you want, but don’t drone on about it (unless you are trying to be irritating).

Get a fucking life.

Jules912 · 08/10/2022 10:48

I've never heard of this! Like most people at my work I put it on before setting off in the morning as you have to show it at the gate and it's far quicker to do that with it round my neck than in my bag.

watcherintherye · 08/10/2022 10:48

Life is full of all sorts of hazards which could be dangerous/fatal in certain circumstances. You cannot legislate or nanny against every single potential danger.

cinnabongene · 08/10/2022 10:48

It’s a really weird thing to fixate on

Which is what could best be described as nagging and condescending
