To have told DH off for driving while wearing his work lanyard

Sequinanddiamonds · 08/10/2022 10:32

this was yesterday! We have it drilled into us where I work that we should not wear our lanyards while driving as it’s dangerous, especially if you crash and the airbag is activated. DH says I’m “overreacting” and says his work don’t tell him anything like this. Aibu to have told him off and made him take the lanyard off?

Sone people seem to have a very narrow definition of ‘tell off’ which leads them off at a tangent to the actual issue.
To me it does mean moan at or criticise. It’s not a big deal.
Just saying.

After all this is natural selection at its finest.

It's not though, is it? How many actual cases of this happening do you really think there are? How many of those cases would be fatal specifically because of the lanyard rather than the general severity of the accident?

A total health and safety nerd could no doubt follow anyone around for a week and tell them about 10,000 things they could change in order to fractionally decrease their risk of injury. Who on earth has the time and headspace for that?

I sometimes take my lanyard off before driving and sometimes don't. I might be slightly more likely to bother taking it off now, if I remember. But telling another adult off for not doing it is bloody ridiculous and infantilising!

There is an episode of Old Harry's Game on Radio 4. The Devil has to punish people in a way suited to their lifestyle or profession.

A Health and Safety officer arrives. His punishment - to spend eternity in a place that is totally safe - with some hazards, but the hazards have appropriate warnings in place Grin

I didn’t tell him off like a baby ffs! I just reminded him to take it off and then told him again when he still didn’t

So, like a baby then?

GloriousGlory · 08/10/2022 15:46

I did tell him off a little but not like i would if he was a baby or child

Oh that's ok then, you didn't make him sit on the naughty step? Had he lost any screen time?

In my experience it’s only on Mumsnet that adults don’t or shouldn’t tell each other off.

Really ? No idea what kind of life you lead but no, it's not normal to be telling another adult off. Wtf.

I’m equally baffled. People tell each other off all the time. Does nobody you know do anything wrong?

When they don’t clean the loo for example.

Love all the smart arsed answer towards the Op.

Air bags deploy at 200 mph, in order inflate faster than the collision. So if you think placing a hard object in-between your chest and the air bag inflating at this speed is funny crack on 😂.

After all this is natural selection at its finest.

Yes but you are not supposed to be smashed in the face/chest by the airbag, it is supposed (provided you are not crouched over the wheel) fill the space between the wheel and you and so when you are thrown forwards into the seatbelt you then hit the already deflating airbag.

Its the same as I keep hearing about how seatbelts more more dangerous for DD and DS, really how? The seatbelt locks in a crash holding both of them again their seats DD will come away more with bruising than DS because he has more muscle, in fact his body will face more stress in it because he is heavier but provided DD adjusts it to come over her shoulder right I don't see how the belt itself is worse for her than him?

TroysMammy · 08/10/2022 16:00

@LuffleGro The key is always taken out at night but sometimes my DP let's the cat out and locks the door leaving the key in the lock so a key on the outside can't open the door.

GloriousGlory · 08/10/2022 16:19

@SlowingDownAndDown you have adults in your home that don't clean the loo? Forget the "telling off" it's not working!

Maybe treating them like children and "telling them off" is what had resulted in such inept behaviour?

Yeah, blame the woman, whatever.
But, returning to the issue, what is it you say to children when they displease you that is a whole category different from what you would say to an adult?

The standard crash test dummies and tests for car safety kit, including seatbelts, have historically been based on the default male body type - both shape and size.

Consequently they can be both less effective for women and in certain types of accident may be a problem.

Its still better for women to use them than not, but they are not designed for women's bodies. I vaguely remember reading that the standard dummy set was to be modified but I've no idea if that has yet happened or if its fed through to safety design as yet.

This may be what people are referring to when they talk about the difference in safety for male vs female bodies.

hesbeingabitofadick · 08/10/2022 12:09

Driving wearing glasses if your airbag goes off is massively dangerous too...

Also, being a female of short stature isn't good - seatbelts are designed for taller humans without a uterus...

Yes, the lanyard is the least of my worries if the airbag was to go off. I tend to take it off for the drive home, but only because it annoys me and it stays in my handbag for the next day. I leave it on when driving at work

Crankley · 08/10/2022 17:42

You told him off? how old is your DH? 12?

And then you made an AIBU about it! It's a ridiculous thing to worry about. I put mine on to drive to work them take it off when I get home. That way I know where it is & I can get into my building.

GloriousGlory · 08/10/2022 18:07

@SlowingDownAndDown I'm not blaming you because you're a woman! I'm blaming you because you treat other adults like children!

Exactly this. Cars are designed mostly for men. Often women find it difficult to get into a safe driving position and this is more dangerous.

Look up what Volvo are doing with their research.

KeyWorker · 08/10/2022 19:12

There is a risk of chest wall injury if the airbag is deployed. I work for the NHS and we had an an email shared with us from the local Police Constabulary recommending that we shouldn’t wear them driving.

I was going to suggest Volvo. They’ve had female crash test dummies and simulators for decades. They were one of the first to put in weight sensing airbags so petite female drivers weren’t killed by airbags deploying to fast (which was happening). This is now standard in all airbag cars.

What about underwired bras?
Surely they'd cut you in half...Shock

Oh God, all I can now see is these cheese wire I used to use years ago when cutting through wheels of cheese....... Flying boobs!

Do they remind you of other things to do in the car to keep yourself safe as well?

“Can we remind all employees, no wanking while driving on the motorway.”
