To have told DH off for driving while wearing his work lanyard

Sequinanddiamonds · 08/10/2022 10:32

this was yesterday! We have it drilled into us where I work that we should not wear our lanyards while driving as it’s dangerous, especially if you crash and the airbag is activated. DH says I’m “overreacting” and says his work don’t tell him anything like this. Aibu to have told him off and made him take the lanyard off?

www.driving.co.uk/news/lanyard-wearers-risk-airbag-inflicted-injuries-police-warn/

it is a particular risk if you have keys attached to your lanyard. It’s not the risk of strangulation from a lanyard, it is the risk that the force of the airbag will cause objects to penetrate your chest

Every link on this page refers back to the same report of a report from a FB group.

Is there any actual data on the risk or level of risk anywhere (especially considering lanyards come in different shapes, sizes and are worn by different shapes and sizes).

Northernsoullover · 08/10/2022 11:38

We are told not to wear out lanyards while driving. I work for a large local authority.

PhillySub · 08/10/2022 11:38

As long as he isn't wearing high heels as well😂

SlowingDownAndDown · 08/10/2022 11:38

I suppose it depends on the severity of the reprimand.
It wasn't unreasonable to give him the information.

Thanks Op I take mine off and remind my employees to do the same, it only takes seconds.

And also seconds to for keys or the pass attached to the lanyard to cause injure at high speed causing significant bruising or lacerations. The key or pass can also be compressed into the wearer’s body by an airbag; this has recently been known to result in a victim suffering a punctured lung.

But hey the smart people on MN know better 🙄

So you have a link to the data on lanyards? I'd love to see it.

I'm open on whether or not they are risks, I'd rather base my behaviour on evidence than reports on FB.

🥱

PortiasBiscuit · 08/10/2022 11:40

The biggest danger of lanyards is dipping them in your soup while you sit down in the canteen.

Also, when I was heavily pregnant I went to the loo and got mine inextricably tangled in my knickers when I bent to pull them up. I couldn’t straighten up. That was a bad moment.

C8H10N4O2 · 08/10/2022 11:40

There is no link in that article to any research or accident statistics - its about potential employer liability if there is an accident (for which the easy solution as an employer is to issue an instruction not to wear them irrespective of any evidence).

Pandor · 08/10/2022 11:40

At the West Wittering Cave-Diving and Base Jumping Club (the WWCDBJC) we would certainly never drive to activities wearing our lanyards.

QueenCamilla · 08/10/2022 11:43

What if I sit my (very tall) 11 year old in the front passenger seat with a lanyard on whilst driving down the motorway?? 😱

Mumsnet is batshit these days

cakeorwine · 08/10/2022 11:43

I can think of many things people do that could be a risk and yet people do them.
It's got to be one hell of an impact for a relatively low mass object to cause serious internal bleeding as it has various items of clothing to go through. The actual impact force of the lanyard must be quite low.

PortalooSunset · 08/10/2022 11:43

YWNBU to mention it. Once. But yep, YWBU to "tell off" another grown adult.

😁

GloriousGlory · 08/10/2022 11:45

If my DH "told me off" for this, he'd get short shrift! I'm a fully functioning adult and will decide my own safety decision around lanyards.

ColadhSamh · 08/10/2022 11:46

Told him off and made him take it off? Give him the information and he can then make his own decision.

JudgeJ · 08/10/2022 11:46

Imagine if the roles were reversed! DH tells DW...in the same manner as above.

But this is typical of MN hypocrisy, were a man to speak to his wife like this it would be over-controlling, aggressive and the advice would be to LTB!

Best comment yet! GrinGrinGrin

ChineAndWheeseParty · 08/10/2022 11:47

We had a company wide (huge company!) communication about exactly this and the dangers.

👏 agreed!

Part of my morning routine is to put on my lanyard when I put on my make-up. In the evening, I pop it next to my make-up when I get home. That way I ensure I have it at all times.

A habit curated from forgetting it. I didn't know about the risk before this thread but have just done a quick mental risk assessment and have decided the Ball ache of forgetting something I need to get into my office, the loo, print, scan, and function seamlessly at work outweighs the infinitesimal risk of puncturing my lung in the event of a car accident accident.

15 months ago I slipped on an incline and broke my wrist and a vertebrae. I haven't stopped putting one foot in front of the other.

@PrincessButtercupToo you reminded me of when MNetters regularly spat wine at the screen. Those were the days.

cakeorwine · 08/10/2022 11:50

This thread is definitely Daily Mail fodder. I wonder what stock picture they will choose?

RosesAndHellebores · 08/10/2022 11:51

This reminds me if the time I bought a pop on window shield to stop my toddler getting too hot in the car. It came with a note to say "do not use on the front windscreen because it will impair visibility and is dangerous". Who'd have thought it.

Just ensure they are rear facing and all will be hunky dory
