I can't believe Liz Truss is 47..

Following on from a thread yesterday, I guessed Liz was 56. I was shocked to hear she's a decade younger. I guess I am being unreasonable. It was probably the photo of her having a meeting wearing comfy trainers that did it. How old would you have guessed she was?

If you're good enough you are old enough. Doesn't matter what age she looks or what age she is, it's her competency that's important. All that being said, I reckon Liz Truss could live to 150 and still not be old enough cos she'll never be good enough!

WahineToa · 08/10/2022 11:36

@OchreDandelion No. did you read my comment? She’s not just a woman, she’s a conservative woman.

Maybe I have got lost in the thread.

I read your one that said about high profile people. I thought that conservative comment one was someone else? But maybe you said it earlier as well. Apologies if I have not joined the dots.

So the implication is that Mumsnet is weighted to the left?

outtheshowernow · 08/10/2022 12:05

Yawn

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2022 12:10

I'm not a conservative voter , but my family and friends , dh is etc and they agree with many others about what they stand for. They might not always agree with it all , but they prefer them to the Labour Party.
I feel that mumsnet is much more left field in its views , generally speaking.
Politics and religion, two subjects to always become controversial once you start that debate..

CaptainThe95thRifles · 08/10/2022 12:14

I can't believe she's 47 either - the naivety of her politics and absolute lack of any critical, independent thought is suggestive of someone much, much younger. Positivelt foetal, without the innocence or potential for intellectual development.

primeoflife · 08/10/2022 12:36

FanniesFlaps · 08/10/2022 07:25

Do we do this to male Prime Ministers?

FFS!

@FanniesFlaps I do!!
I can't believe how old Keir Stammer is! He looks much younger.

I'm a bitch regardless of whether they are male of female 🤷🏼‍♀️.

Oh and Boris looks like an unkempt- insert expletive of your choice! Just to match it up a bit.

She does look older, or if she looks 40 then that's great as it makes me 30 🤣

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 08/10/2022 12:37

She looks 103.

I can't believe Liz Truss is 47..
primeoflife · 08/10/2022 12:37

Feel I should add she looks fine just older than her years 🤷🏼‍♀️

Notonthestairs · 08/10/2022 12:45

I think Truss always looks smart & well turned out and that's pretty much all I ask for in terms of physical appearance as a PM.

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/10/2022 13:01

Her policies do make you jump to the conclusion that she must be older because they feel so regressive and out of date - literally like stepping back in time to a slightly more turbo charged 1981. So yes, I did assume she was in her late 50s.

I think I also assumed this because the typical brexit supporter is white, middle class and in their mid to late 50s (not that everyone in their late 50s falls into that bracket, obviously!) so she fits that profile. She also speaks like one - hard and ‘zealous’ - all abstract theory and principle, with no acknowledgement of the practical impact of normal people of her policies.

So yes, she does come across as older - and I’m obviously engaging in some horrendous subconscious stereotyping here - me and a large portion of the electorate - which is one reason why the conservatives are now in deep trouble with an unelectable leader and just over a year to go.

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2022 13:07

She was a remainer once.
Not that makes much difference now.
UKIP are now the shadow party in charge and many are actually pleased about it too :(
We really have gone very much to the right now

Ladywiddio48 · 08/10/2022 13:11

I would have thought 57.She has zero personality which makes her look older.

Hardly, Truss wants to increase no skilled immigration by 20,000 per year to "Grow the economy" these wont be European workers.

With her backing, up to 5m HK Chinese are coming here too & surprisingly, many are older/elderly, just what social care and the NHS needs.

Truss like Boris is a Tory because thats the route to power, all her beliefs are fluid.

Figmentofmyimagination · 08/10/2022 13:18

Another reason why she seems older is that she still comes across as targeting the base - the 300k party members, who are overwhelmingly over middle class and well over 50 - so she acts as if she understands and identifies closely with them as a constituency and does not come across as if she identifies with the wider electorate.

Maybe she will get better at this. Her problem (among many) is that the ‘Truss’ we have seen so far is the one who modelled a turbo charged thatcher in order to win over the base, on display again, inevitably, at the party conference, but she now has the uphill (and possibly insurmountable) task of changing her vibe to appeal to the rest of us. She is paying the price for having had to sell herself to a bunch of older very right wing people.

For example, her instant reaction to the young Greenpeace supporters who interrupted her speech made her seem extremely dated, zealous and old fashioned.

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2022 13:27

I don't know if anyone remembers this, but back in May 2016 ( or at that sort of time ) they had a brexit debate on the tele and Nigel Farage was one of the speakers. He was asked by the audience about his views on immigration and why he was against freedom of movement as part of the EU.
He answered that if we voted leave we would see many more immigrants but from the commonwealth countries , India etc
I don't think this was picked up on much by the more right wing press, but I do remember him saying this to one of the men in the audience.
The latest policies do not really surprise me , but if it's more elderly people with complex needs then this isn't a good thing for the already over stretched NHS / social care in the UK.
The ones from HK might have more money to be more independent though , but I don't know
The ones that may come from India will want these higher paid professional jobs in IT.
Ending fom is a huge worry , but maybe they see this as a way around it ? Makes me wonder how the electorate will see this though

the80sweregreat · 08/10/2022 13:31

Considering her childhood background with CND marches and a left wing family , I'm still convinced all this is a massive rebellion stage against her own background. Apparently her dad isn't happy about this , but people often have to live with others that have different views and can agree to disagree on them without it becoming personal
It can't be easy though

vera99 · 08/10/2022 14:01

I went to the Kite Festival this year and all the parking and security staff with a few exceptions were Indian students at some of the lesser universities. Had a very good chat with one of the guys and he said its much easier to get student visas now and they can all work part time when they get here. The US is their first choice but the UK is a close second.

thisismadness77 · 08/10/2022 14:03

Mummadeze · 08/10/2022 07:23

She looks late 40s to me. It’s not very nice to comment on this though. She is a politician, she is not trying to look like a model. (And I am an ardent Labour supporter, not a fan).

This. How about a bit of female solidarity?

MyCatIsAChonk · 08/10/2022 14:12

mumsnet is really courting the clickbait by keeping this up isn't it? Is pulling a woman's looks apart "in the spirit of the site"?

WahineToa · 08/10/2022 14:16

@MyCatIsAChonk right? It’s ridiculous

walkingonsunshinekat · 08/10/2022 14:17

thisismadness77 · 08/10/2022 14:03

This. How about a bit of female solidarity?

Truss has been part of and is now leader of a Govt that has seen a total collapse of many services for women, even now debating whether to increase benefits or not - a decision what will effect women far more than men.

Solidarity works both ways.

Alltheholidays · 08/10/2022 14:20

Couldn’t believe it either! Thought she was mid to late 50’s.
Maybe it’s something about being Tory though, as I thought the odious Conor Burns (the one suspended) was in his 60’s!

WahineToa · 08/10/2022 14:22

Are you fucking serious? So you can be misogynistic ageist and just downright nasty af if you believe the person ‘deserves it’? Got it. You seem nice.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 08/10/2022 14:31

Zippedydoo123 · 08/10/2022 08:02

She is right at the prime perimenopausal age.

And as the media and certain sections of MN are so keen to tell us, that's apparently an absolute clusterfuck of 20 years of brain fog, joint pains and general inability to function as a professional or even as a human being.

Just what the country needs from a Prime Minister.

It's as though the 1950s never left us.

She's still shit, but it's bugger all to do with her withering ovaries. She's just crap.

Solidarity does work both ways.

Swearing and saying "You seem nice" isn't actually a very nice thing to say is it? but its all ok for you to attack someone on the 'net.

She is deliberately makes herself look older to be like Thatcher, commenting on that isn't wrong imho.

MNHQ has looked at the thread and deems (atm) its within the rules, why don't you just accept that?
