Just that really …

how often are they biting and why? I must say, none of my elder 3 have ever bitten. Or hit properly, really. The tantrums lasted around 6 months here.

Prinnny · 07/10/2022 17:13

DD3.5 has never hit or bitten. I suppose they won’t stop until the underlying behaviour is addressed or triggers are identified (presuming they don’t have special needs).

Sh05 · 07/10/2022 17:14

Are they tantrumming and then hitting and biting?
None of my five have been hitters or biters, the tantrums started when my youngest was around 2and a half, she very rarely has a tantrum anymore though.
None of the others had tantrums so I found that stage really difficult with youngest.

Just spent 3 weeks getting through the worst of it, and think we're coming out the other side. Lots of removing from the situation, clear boundaries. Driving myself insane with the number of times I've said 'kind hands'...

Peeeas · 07/10/2022 17:15

No biting though, just general lashing out. Nearly 2.

Downonthefarrrm · 07/10/2022 17:16

Hmm it’s been going on a few months.

My friend's child stopped just after 3.5 years old after being at nursery for a few months and another child not till after 5 years old but he was diagnosed as autistic.

NCFT0922 · 07/10/2022 17:18

What do you do when they bite and hit? They need to learn that these aren’t acceptable behaviours. It needs to be nipped in the bud.

Youdoyoutoday · 07/10/2022 17:20

My eldest did this for a while when around 2, it was really upsetting especially at nursery pick time! Mortifying actually!
Once he learned to talk more, it certainly made a huge difference.

Downonthefarrrm · 07/10/2022 17:22

Thanks @Youdoyoutoday . When was that?

When her best friend bit her back 😂

LovedFedAndNoonesDead · 07/10/2022 17:26

My twins (just turned 3) have been known to bite and headbutt each other. However, yesterday at collection time, nursery told me T2 but another child at nursery. He was taken out of the situation, calmed down and given ‘the talk’ about kindness and only food goes in our mouths. Apparently he said he was sad afterwards and said he needed to go off and think about his actions!! Hopefully it’s a one off at nursery!

Youdoyoutoday · 07/10/2022 17:31

Oh gosh.... around 2 and half I think, he's nearly 9 now so a bit hazy on the details. He's turned out lovely now and wouldn't dream of hitting anyone!

I did expect the same with my DD whose nearly 3 but she was an early talker so we had far less of it, she does hit us occasionally especially when we say no but we've never had any issue at nursery like I did with DS.

AloysiusBear · 07/10/2022 17:32

Mine only had brief phases of biting/hitting, between 18m & 2 or so.

MuckyPlucky · 07/10/2022 17:34

Neither of mine did this. I genuinely didn’t realise it was a common thing. My DS had the odd little tantrum but DD honestly never had one.

Neither did I, is it common? I dont remember any neices or nephews doing it either

Downonthefarrrm · 07/10/2022 17:38

I will freely admit to feeling defensive but anyone fancy answering the question?

Yes it's common.

CuriousCatfish · 07/10/2022 17:40

I think it stops when they can express themselves in better ways. So when language is better developed.

Overthebow · 07/10/2022 17:42

My toddler has never bitten but used to hit occasionally. She grew out of it around 18 months old once she had more understanding of everything. She’s now 2 and able to communicate a lot more, I would be worried if she still did it now.

Downonthefarrrm · 07/10/2022 17:42

Thanks @CuriousCatfish . Starting to feel I need therapy every time he meets another kid at the moment.

I have to admit though the responses here are what I know I’m going to be up against. Which is the worst.

What do you mean? Up against what?

Oh just ignore the 'my perfect cherub never did anything like that' lot.

It is upsetting, but they do eventually grow out of it. It's also a perfectly normal if somewhat mortifying development stage.

Downonthefarrrm · 07/10/2022 17:45

Thanks @CuriousCatfish

@Overthebow the ‘i would be very worried’ sort of comments. Which you knew.
