Apart from the fact that it means the clock in the car will be wrong for six months, I just think it is a faff that doesn't give any benefit to the vast majority of people.

YABU - just change the clocks you snowflake

YANBU - It's daft and we shouldn't do it anymore

Agree it's getting dark here at about 6.45pm and I hate the thought that when they go back it'll be latest 5.45pm. Don't get changing the time so it gets dark earlier in the day. Don't really care about dark mornings because commuting to work isn't much fun either way but if the clocks didn't go back there'd be a bit of daylight left after work.

Allthegoodnamesaregoneffs · 07/10/2022 13:46

Well your car might be wrong for 6 months, but my oven will be correct, so swings and roundabouts :)

Ritasueandbobtoo9 · 07/10/2022 13:47

Totally agree, keep the clocks the same, more light at night.

loottie · 07/10/2022 13:50

The only potential benefit of Scottish independence for me (living in southern England) is if we don't have to change our clocks back an hour every winter.

What? Would England go onto Permanent Summer Time after independence?

PeskyRooks · 07/10/2022 13:55

I think I remember mum telling me that they didn't put the clocks back one year as an experiment and what happened was loads more road accidents as everyone was driving to work and walking/driving to school in the pitch darkness.

There are generally more road accidents and heart attacks in the days after putting the clocks forward each year, due to people missing sleep.

I have a sentimental attachment to the idea of Britain, straddling the meridian, should be on GMT

But I'd prefer to see us stick to BST for practical reasons (and let devolved Scotland do its own thing if it wants to - loads of countries have more than one time zone)

Bytrgrewd · 07/10/2022 14:05

Five months...

I'm looking forward to my car clock being correct!

SummerInSun · 07/10/2022 14:09

You have it the wrong way round - winter time is the "correct" time (GMT) - what we have at the moment is the varied daylight savings time (BST). If we didn't move the clocks you'd have winter time all the time, so it would be light at 3:30am in summer but darker earlier at night, which to my mind is a big waste of lovely summer light.

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 07/10/2022 14:21

@SummerInSun nothing to stop us having BST all year round though, is there?

I would prefer that. Hate the bright, hot nights. With thick curtains I wouldn't be woken up any earlier but there would be more time for the house to cool down before trying to sleep.

GMT year round for me!

Let me guess, OP lives in the south east?

Mean while everywhere north of Nottingham would be in darkness every morning until 10am in December.

Plumbear2 · 07/10/2022 14:30

Yes they need to change. I don't want my kids having to walk/cycle to school in the dark.

No, live about 2-3 hours north of Nottingham.

I live in NE England and would hate it to be dark until after 9am in winter so no, thanks.

Oddbutnotodd · 07/10/2022 14:38

Not the point of the thread but modern cars change automatically

OhmygodDont · 07/10/2022 14:41

Makes much more sense to have a lighter evening than morning. Maybe we should trial it again. I hate the dark pulling in as it is without losing a whole hour of later light jusg so I can make toast in sun light.

So high school kids can go to school in the dark. Catching buses, walking and on bikes in the dark? No thanks.

But we have to catch buses, walk and cycle in the dark in winter anyway.

AsAnyFuleKno · 07/10/2022 15:06

No, YABU. I can't wait for them to go back so we get lighter mornings for a while.

Booklover3 · 07/10/2022 15:08

Im not sure if I’m bothered either way… I’d prefer lighter evenings but I’d hate dark mornings.

Twokidsanddone · 07/10/2022 15:11

The lighter mornings it gives won't last long and it'll be dark on the way to work again soon enough anyway. But mostly I just don't want to have the hassle of adjusting my 1yo and 3yos bed/wake up times. 1yo currently wakes at 6. The idea of that becoming 5 doesn't fill me with joy. I wish small children got the memo! Either don't put them back, or do then don't bother putting them forward again in summer.

montysma1 · 07/10/2022 15:14

Very few children walk to school nowadays.
And rush hour hone is in the dark so why is everybody not dying then?
