Apart from the fact that it means the clock in the car will be wrong for six months, I just think it is a faff that doesn't give any benefit to the vast majority of people.

YABU - just change the clocks you snowflake

YANBU - It's daft and we shouldn't do it anymore

People moan about this every year and I’m sure many think not turning the clocks back will mean it continues to get dark at about 6.30pm all winter. Where I live - which is the Notts/Derbyshire border - it gets dark about 4 in the depths of winter, so if the clocks didn’t go back, it would get dark at 5pm. Big wow!

Winter is dark in this country - deal with it!

BirmaBrite · 07/10/2022 19:14

The reason people need more light in the mornings is because... light is what wakes you up and sets your circadian rhythm. Getting up in the dark is impossible.

Mine must be shot to pieces then as I get up at 5am most days !

Oooh, can we form the United Kingdom of Scotland and Yorkshire?

Sounds good.
maybe Cumbria and Lancashire might want to join too.

What about Northumbria?

Bring back the darkness! Love it

I think I remember mum telling me that they didn't put the clocks back one year as an experiment and what happened was loads more road accidents as everyone was driving to work and walking/driving to school in the pitch darkness.

Well why can't they just adapt school/work times to suit local conditions, rather than faffing with the clocks twice a year?

More the merrier guys!! Welcome to independence

Changing to GMT by puting the clocks back in autumn isn't such a big deal if it means kids can walk to school in a bit of daylight thus making it a safer experience.

Rainbowshit · 07/10/2022 19:49

Yeah fuck folk in the north and Scotland. 🙄

Very few children walk to school nowadays.
And rush hour hone is in the dark so why is everybody not dying then?

Where do you live? Everyone I know's children walk to school. Although to be fair the local catchment areas mean no one really lives more than half a mile away from the schools.

I agree that we should stop changing clocks, but stay on GMT rather than BST if that happens.

We should never put the clocks back in winter. It is at best an outdated practice.

When I have travelled in winter to France or the Netherlands where the clocks are one hour ahead, I have experienced first hand how much better it is.

Outdated practice? 😂😂😂

We are supposed to be GMT not summer time, that's what's outdated!

I prefer summer time though!

Yep I remember that time. The kids all went to school in the dark with the knock on effect of more road accidents.

The clocks change for the farmers.

Snog · 07/10/2022 20:28

I'd like BST all year round

Strength in numbers - sounds great!

Don't all cars do it automatically these days? The only thing that is wrong is my oven! I quite enjoy putting the clocks back.

I don't mind it but I always forget how to do the one on the oven and end up putting five random timer settings on it before I finally do it by trial and error.

Eeksteek · 07/10/2022 21:23

Hell no. Bloody pick one and stick to it. There’s the same amount of daylight whenever you have it. If you want it at a different time to everyone else, get up earlier. I’m sick of adjusting my body clock twice a year so that a fucking bent politician could play golf after work. It’s a ridiculous practice in the modern world. There are practically no farmers left. And a million zillion office workers.

Eeksteek · 07/10/2022 21:24

Actually, I reckon it’s the sort of utterly pointless bit of tradition (but that universally affects everyone) that it would actually be a good idea to have a referendum on.

Kids walk to school? now that would be a novel idea!!!

Stupid to move clocks back, extra light, even an hour, is more beneficial in the evening that in the morning.

DanielRicciardosSmile · 07/10/2022 21:41

I don't really see that an hour of daylight has any more worth from 4pm to 5pm than from 8am to 9am tbh. What is everyone doing at 4.30pm in December that needs natural light, when artificial light is apparently perfectly fine at 8.30am?

JellyBabiesSaveLives · 07/10/2022 14:21

@SummerInSun nothing to stop us having BST all year round though, is there?

It would be bizarre if the country which is actually on the Greenwich Meridian had its time offset from that meridian

TheClitterati · 07/10/2022 21:48

No way - I've been looking forward to that extra hour in bed since they snatched it away from me months ago.

Novum · 07/10/2022 21:50

I'm ancient enough to remember the time when they did the permanent BST experiment. I thought it was great not having to faff around with changing clocks, and it didn't make any substantial difference in terms of light in the mornings and evenings where I was. It was a pity they didn't stick with it.

Why? It's an artificial concept, after all.
