How long do you leave cards up for?

We've had a baby recently and have received lots of lovely cards (and continue to do so as people visit). They're on our mantle as well as the window sill in the living room.

How long do you usually keep your cards up for?

I don't want to take them down yet but my husband thinks it's probably time.

Until the next time I dust.

cravattwat · 05/10/2022 14:33

Ours tend to come down when the next celebration happens because we're lazy. So anniversary will come down for his birthday, then mine. I can still see a wedding invite from the summer. 😄

A couple of days because they look messy and I can't stand clutter!

user1497787065 · 05/10/2022 14:56

Birthday cards for the day and in the bin the following morning. Christmas cards go up on Christmas Eve and in the bin in Boxing Day.

losingit31 · 05/10/2022 14:57

One week, then they go in the recycling

Longer if it's Christmas and they arrive more than a week before Christmas, obviously. Fortunately we live in a country where there is effectively no postal system so cards are few and far between.

You didn't keep your baby congratulations cards?

I didn't. Can't see any particular reason to. Some of us just aren't card people.

User38899953 · 05/10/2022 15:10

I don't put them up at all. They tend to congregate on a pile on the side until I bin them

zighead · 05/10/2022 18:09

I keep them up for a month

mountainsunsets · 05/10/2022 18:26

We don't keep cards up as the cats knock them over and then the dog eats them Grin

feckoffbrian · 05/10/2022 18:27

I read them and bin them. Just clutter in my eyes

Christmas cards - until the decorations come down on 27th

The day after Boxing Day? Blimey, short festive season in your house!

Chikapu · 05/10/2022 18:32

No longer than a day, they're just visual clutter and I'm trying to move away from sending and receiving them.

AsAnyFuleKno · 05/10/2022 18:52

Birthday/anniversary/Valentines - open on day, take down a week after the event.
Good luck/Congratulations - open on receipt, take down a couple of weeks after the event
Christmas - open on receipt, take down approx Jan 2nd depending on when hols fall.
Thank you cards - open on receipt, keep up for a couple of weeks.

All the above are approximate and might be 'rounded' to nearest weekend.

You didn't keep your baby congratulations cards?

Only got a couple or so for both & by the time they'd arrived we were well aware we had a baby!

Not really, tree & decorations go up as close to 1st December as possible (depending on work schedule) & we do lots of Christmassy/festive things throughout December but once it's over I like everything packed away & the house back to normal before Hogmanay & DS's early January birthday.

SarahSissions · 05/10/2022 21:29

Can you start to make an album of something and include them in that? Or cut out the messages inside and pop them in a collage and frame it and stick it in the loo?

You didn't keep your baby congratulations cards?

Yep, that's weird. We still have our 'new baby girl' cards. Had them over 25 years now. I still have my 21st birthday cards too - nearly 30 years old they are - AND all of the 'keys.' Also have our 'wedding congratulations' cards, and 40th and 50th birthday cards. Also DD's 18th and 21st birthday cards.

New baby? A month. Christmas cards? From the minute we get them to 5th January. Birthday or Anniversary? A week.

Exactly this

Queuesarasarah · 05/10/2022 21:34

New baby cards I probably left for months! Birthday cards a week ish.

Oblomov22 · 05/10/2022 21:40

Most cards whenever the recycling next is.
