‘Keep your house’ from wise older work colleague when I was moving in with now DH. Still have that house 17 years later, I don’t think I need an escape route, but I have one. It’s basically make sure you have some financial independence.

Don't issue a mini-budget without discussing it with people who know about things like that.

Similar to that @Shoxfordian my nana used to say "if you're going through hell you keep going". She also said "good or bad, everything ends" eg appreciate the good things and know the bad things don't last forever

@IWillBeWaxingAnOwl

My aunt used to finish this with

'If you're going through hell, keep on going. You might get out before the devil knows your there'

I think it was from a song. Loved her saying it when times were tough.

God, these are getting tedious.

‘Lower your standards’ when I had my 3rd child.

Highfivemum · 04/10/2022 18:28

Choose your battles.
don’t trouble trouble till trouble troubles you.
always be a first rate version of your self and not a second rate of someone else.
saying nothing is often more powerful than saying something.
normal is good. You only really appreciate it when things go wrong.

The people that matter don’t mind, and the people who mind don’t matter

The only person who can make you feel inferior is yourself.

‘Lower your standards’ when I had my 3rd child.

I was told that and it is so true. Have 6 now and they are certainly much lower

carriebradshawwithlessshoes · 04/10/2022 19:08

A lot of Desiderata is also great advice

ThirtyThreeTrees · 04/10/2022 19:08

If you don't value yourself, don't expect others to.

The only thing you can control is your attitude.

Prepare yourself to be single all your life. Build friends, hobbies, self confidence etc so that you will always be content. If someone comes along, you can share with with them but don't rely on a partner to bring you happiness.

A third/half of every pay rise should go to savings for the big stuff rather than flittered away on upgrades or wants.

In work, if it's not in writing,it might as well not have happened.

If you are always honest, you can me er be caught in a lie.

Never bitch about someone's ex with them, far too often they re-appear.

Sometimes you cannot stop the car crash or rescue someone but have to let it happen and hope there are survivors.

Own your embarrassment. Brazen in out & it will be over sooner.

Your health is everything, mind it.

Take breaks when you need them,or your body will take them for you.

Never take the bait.

Planesmistakenforstars · 04/10/2022 19:16

Don’t beat yourself up forever. Beat yourself up once and then move on.

The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The seconds best time is now.

I'm still a chronic procrastinator though!

wb3 · 04/10/2022 20:10

It's better to regret things you've done rather than regret things you haven't done.

wb3 · 04/10/2022 20:11

Own your mistakes, don't dwell on them.

If you don't GOSUB a program loop, you'll never get a subroutine

impressivelycunty · 04/10/2022 20:17

Nothing is ever as good, or as bad, as it first seems.

Bit eeyore but true.

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 04/10/2022 21:36

Never burn your bridges. However good might feel, you never know when you are going to need them.

IwishIwasSupermum · 04/10/2022 21:41

Never underestimate what your children might get up to.

TheRubyRedshoes · 04/10/2022 21:53

@PicaK
