Cost of living faux confusion - is this the new non-binary?

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 03/10/2022 14:49

A couple of years back there was a whole spate of threads from people claiming they “didn’t understand” the concept of being non-binary and, while they absolutely weren’t being judgemental in any way (heaven forbid!), they were terribly confused what it all meant and wanted to be educated. “I just want to understand, explain it to me” ad infinitum.

Those seem to have died out a bit now - but faux confusion over cost of living threads seems to be the replacement. More and more threads are going down the route of “But I don’t understand, I went to the shops on Thursday and people were actually buying things, so how can there be a cost of living crisis?! Who is spending all this money? And I don’t mean shitholes full of common people discount shops like Aldi and Poundland - I mean NICE shops like M&S Foodhall and Waitrose! So where is this cost of living crisis? I’m sooooo confuuuused!!!”

I can’t be the only one thinking that this basically translates to “If there was a REAL cost of living crisis people would be rummaging in the gutters for bruised apples instead of spending actual money in nice shops and rubbing shoulders with the likes of me - therefore they should all stop moaning and go and chew on an Asda Essential”?

the cost of living crisis TOTALLY confirms that there are not two material biological sexes.

you’ve persuaded me OP.

Yep.
Was a non -believer till now , lol.

Non binary is bonkers, if you can explain it to me in a clear way I will cease to be confused, faux or otherwise.

I think perhaps the 'loads of people were in the pubs and restaurants near me' type posts are in answer to those claiming that the entire country is on its knees and nobody has had a fiver to spare for entertainment since the brexit vote.

As usual, balance is everything.

I agree with this, balance is definitely important.

I remember there was a thread couple of months ago where the OP claimed the mood in supermarkets had noticeably shifted and everyone was gloomy and serious due to the increased prices.

Personally, I haven’t noticed any such thing (we shop mostly in Aldi and occasionally Sainsburys).

Prices have risen (and I haven’t seen any posts on here claiming otherwise), but not everyone is in the same situation and affected in the sane way.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 03/10/2022 15:17

Except one of those things is made up nonsense, and the other is actual reality. So odd comparison.

SillySausage81 · 03/10/2022 15:20

YANBU to say that there is a lot of faux confusion from well-off people who won't be affected as much by the cost of living crisis.

However, YABU to compare it to non-binary, which, the more I learn about it the more I become thoroughly convinced that it is an absolute load of attention-seeking nonsense.

oldtableleg · 03/10/2022 15:27

they (COL & non binary) aren't in anyway analogous so YABU.

As someone who is on uc and hasn't stepped foot in an M&S or waitrose in years there is so much cringe in this op I can't even even 🤢just no, try again.

I think you’ve missed the point…

Ah yeah. The confused and scared looking people picking up goods, then putting them back while shuffling around supermarket? I remember that one.

Agree about the balance.

Nah I still think non binary is a load of cobblers.

Yep.

OverArmour · 03/10/2022 15:32

W0tnow · 03/10/2022 14:52

It’s kind of an odd parallel to draw.

Although… there may be a parallel between young non binary people and parents who shop in Waitrise and M&S? 🤔😂

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 03/10/2022 15:36

Blahburst · 03/10/2022 14:51

Nah I still think non binary is a load of cobblers.

But whether it is or isn’t is not really the issue here. You think the concept of being non-binary is cobblers and have said so - no beating about the bush. The kind of threads I’m talking about are from people who clearly also think it’s cobblers, but dress it up as “I’m trying to understand, but I’m just struggling…” Yes, of course you are 🤔

It’s the same with the cost of living deniers. They won’t say “Crisis my foot - people are just lazy bastards who should work harder”. So instead they invent this “confusion” about having actually seen people in shops to imply the same thing.

YABVU to draw a parallel between poverty, which is real and scary and one of the main causes of human misery throughout history, and being non-binary, which is very definitely not two of those things, although the attention it gets is quite scary.

CandyLeBonBon · 03/10/2022 15:37

Excellent shoe horning of disdain for those who don't buy into the wrongthink of gender-woo, whilst also disparaging those who choose to spend their own money in a way that suits them and pretending it's coming from a genuine place of curiosity! Artfully done - well played OP!

Did you also comment on pasta and toilet roll usage in 2020?

FourTeaFallOut · 03/10/2022 15:38

There's no such thing as a non-binary sex category among humans. Food inflation is real. The faux link between the two requires kind of leap one can only achieve with a faith based jet pack.

It’s worrying that you think I’m suggesting a parallel between the two subjects, rather than their treatment in certain corners of MN…

Non binary makes sense to me. Some people (not just teenagers) don’t identify with being male or female and binary is number in base 2 (all computers use binary) so non binary, that not being either gender makes sense.

Whist you have the right to say you don’t agree with it or understand it, why be so unpleasant in your comments.

Spottybluepyjamas · 03/10/2022 15:40

Not sure what non-binary has got to do with it, but I'm certainly not confused about it. It doesn't exist, there are 2 sexes. Hope that helps clear up any 'confusion'!

It doesn't matter what you do or don't identify with, you are still one of the two sexes

Johnnysgirl · 03/10/2022 15:48

Strange comparison, op. You think the non binary bollocks has been adequately explained, then? Bless...

ScentOfSawdust · 03/10/2022 15:49

Yeah. YANBU.

It’s similar to the way that so many posters often ignore the actual question being asked and instead leap at any opportunity to voice their gender-critical views.

OrderConfirmation · 03/10/2022 15:51

phishy · 03/10/2022 15:11

Non-binary my arse.

Arses are non binary

VampiresWife · 03/10/2022 15:51

Creepybookworm · 03/10/2022 14:53

No because non-binary doesn't make any sense at all. It's completely illogical. The cost of living crises is completely logical.

This.

NumberTheory · 03/10/2022 15:56

YABU to draw a parallel. You can find plenty of faux confusion on MN about almost anything and frequently on both sides of any particular subject.

Not sure a lot of the non-binary confusion was faux. People who have just heard about it are still confused, but all the discussion gets hived off onto its own board so you don’t see the threads so much. The people who were confused a few years ago are probably less confused now, having seen the (non)answers to their questions about it, and have taken up a “side” on the issue.

Some of the cost of living crises confusion might not be faux either. Some people haven’T felt the pinch of the current economic woes and really do wonder why people are going on about it so much. But you’ll find much more concern over the cost of living crisis than either faux or real confusion.

ocadodeliveroo · 03/10/2022 15:56

I may sound really backwards, but what the hell is non binary?

Xiaoxiong · 03/10/2022 15:58

I think your error is that you think that the "explain non-binary" threads are fake like the cost of living threads, in that the main poster knows it's bollocks but is pretending to want it explained to make a point.

I think most GC women on here have been through a peaking journey from "be kind, live and let live, I'm an ally" to "ok wait a minute...I just don't get it, can anyone explain this gender stuff that appears to me to be riddled with contradictions and circular definitions". I don't think those threads were faux confusion, I think they are/were genuine confusion.

I would (still) love for someone to explain NB to me, because I would love to go back to where I was in 2017 where I hadn't lost friends and felt like I could vote Lib Dem or even Labour with enthusiasm. I have everything to gain from going back to TWAW/be kind, it's not faux confusion at all to ask for help getting back there. But so far, I can't.

Somethingneedstochange · 03/10/2022 15:59

Well there clearly is even our local Tesco has reduced the home range and moved it all downstairs. As well as reducing the toy section to make room for the items. Which are mainly basic home essentials kettles and toasters etc.
