Beckham - blood money

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 19:57

Beckham has earned at least £70million ( although sources say nearer £145 million) to be ambassador for the World Cup Qatar
At least 6.5 thousand workers have already died bringing football to Qatar. The working conditions are appalling. Something that a few million towards decent temporary housing, water and food would solve.
They also criminalise homosexuality whilst Beckham has been a gay rights advocate.

Just how can he accept such huge fees on the back of such a regime? Or at least not use the fee to highlight how to make football a game without shame.

Bloody hell the bar for men really is low. All you have to do is be attractive (apparently he’s considered attractive, I think he’s pig ugly and always has been) and stand in a queue for a while and people will overlook accepting money to promote a place that despises women and imprisons gay men.

a colleague and his wife worked in Qatar for a while. She was pregnant and miscarried at 18 weeks. She kept her maiden name and my colleague had a face against time digging out her marriage certificate because she was going to be arrested in hospital for extra marital relations unless she provided proof of marriage, because her surname did not match her DH’s.

But hey, let’s all go visit there because David Beckham says it’s cool

lljkk · 02/10/2022 20:37

oh dear, all I did was post links to stories about groups boycotting the WC in Qatar. Maybe one day the links will appear, unless MN is hiding all my posts now...

I read something quite detailed on how that number isn’t correct. They had taken the whole number of Asian workers (white collar as well as labour etc) that died in Qatar over the past decade. These are from all sorts of deaths eg cancer, heart attack, road traffic accident. I’ll try and find the link. Obviously there will have been people who died in construction accidents and that is horrific too but it is not correct that 6,500 labourers have died on World Cup construction projects specifically. Construction is also the deadliest indirectly in the UK for accidents I see from a quick google with around 30 deaths in the last year.

Exactly. They have been awarded the wordcup in 2010. That makes 650 migrant workers a year approx. Still not great but considering it counts out of work accidents, the number might not be as horrific when it comes to at-work deaths. I believe UK had about 120 work related deaths last year. Though we of course have CONSIDERABLY more workers!

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 02/10/2022 20:39

Do people realise that Qatar has an appealing human rights record despite the lack of dead workers, rights?

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 02/10/2022 20:42

No amount of money is ever enough for the Beckhams. They are greedy bastards. It's absolutely gross.

He only queued for the queen cos he is so fucking desperate for a knighthood.

Remember his leaked tantrum 🤣

Theluggage15 · 02/10/2022 20:43

The reason so many non Qatari workers die of ‘natural causes’ is because that means no compensation has to be paid to the families. Yeah natural causes my arse.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 02/10/2022 20:43

I wouldn’t trust any data coming from Qatar. They don’t like people speaking out against the country.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 02/10/2022 20:44

@CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop ooh what leaked tantrum??

CatchYouOnTheFlippetyFlop · 02/10/2022 20:46

I'll see if I can find a link, but he was pissing and moaning saying how he's so unappreciated in this country and how could Katherine Jenkins get a damehood when all she has done was snort coke lol.

Hearthnhome · 02/10/2022 20:46

I don’t think anyone is disputing Qatars human rights record.

If you are going to start using facts and figure to back up a point, and those facts and figures are wildly incorrect people are going to point that out.

Theres a huge difference between the figures no discussion is ever made better by false facts.

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 20:47

InCheesusWeTrust · 02/10/2022 20:32

Because even Guardian didn't claim they all died building the stadium.

This type of sensationalism and misuse of numbers ctually takes away from the actual issue of general worker's safety there. Which bas issues

Whew.
Thanks all. I was worried about the human abuse in Quatar and Beckham compliance.
Obviously I’m being over dramatic. There’s probably very few dead.

Lol. I like to think the Queen had the measure of him and that’s why she wouldn’t knight him. What a thoroughly annoying man and annoying family all round!

Theluggage15 · 02/10/2022 20:52

The facts and figures aren’t wildly incorrect. Apart from 6500 is probably a wild undercount as it didn’t include several countries’ statistics.

Prescottdanni123 · 02/10/2022 20:56

If this is true, the world Cup should be cancelled for this year and given to another nation. I don't care if that means that we don't get a world cup for another few years while another country gets everything ready. 6 people dying would be 6 too many.

Iusyje · 02/10/2022 20:57

lightisnotwhite · 02/10/2022 20:20

I am. But Beckham is a massive hypocrite.
One he has enough money to not be ambassador and secondly if he takes the fee enough money to ensure that workers don’t die unnecessarily.
Why wouldn’t you?
Interestingly other Europeans that use “local” crew make the effort to house their workers provide basic facilities etc. The Qataris don’t and nor does Beckham.

Rather than singling out an easy target, why not tell us what YOU have done to help end the abuse in Qatar? I bet where you work, you have benefitted from a policy or decision that put someone else at a disadvantage. Have you done anything about it or is it just easier to blame Celebrities for an unfair world?

InCheesusWeTrust · 02/10/2022 20:57

Ooh now I wonder of uk keeps numbers on foreign workers dying. I can't find anything.
I know of quite a few cases most of which would be natural, accident, some murder, eh soz manslaugher apparently.
Note, not to compare! Just curious if the numbers are kept?

The FA are so wrong ever giving it to Qatar and there are huge boycotts happening because of it. DH and I FINALLY have the money to afford a few weeks trip to a World Cup tournament and I just would never go there, not for all the tea in China

RedToothBrush · 02/10/2022 21:27

He's still not got that knighthood has he?

Maybe he is trying it now through different Royals😁

Whataboutry? I don’t give any money to Qatar or my time or my endorsement.

Beckham is not an “easy” target. He’s the reason people will think the World Cup is perfectly fine to take place there and the Qatari “government” ( family) are acceptable. Anyone who has worked there knows it’s not.

OP posts:
InCheesusWeTrust · 03/10/2022 09:44

Anyone? How many of people who worked there did you soeak to?
Because I remember from previous threads quite a few people saying it''s allright for some.

Luxurysleuth007 · 03/10/2022 10:02

The irony being Victoria pushing her Pride T-shirts hard over the summer which of course was nothing but a huge PR move to muddy the waters with their ‘stance’ on these issues because she knew DB was pimping for Qatar.

As a Spice Girls fan its really not a good look but they are money hungry so not out of character, shrewd and calculated stunts like the queueing thing all to make him out to be the nice guy whilst he looks the other way promoting Qatar.

LydiaBennetsUglyBonnet · 03/10/2022 10:04

B is no longer in the Spice Girls is she? I don’t think she toured with them on last tour. She’s out me off seeing them TBH
