AIBU to be delighted that Michael Gove launched his bid to be Prime Minister on the BBC this morning?

When DS was in year 5, he had to write a sentence with the word 'politician' in it. Obviously he must have listened to my rantings,as he wrote 'Michael Gove is the worst politician ever'. His teacher gave him 5 house points! Grin

It's not a very complex sentence.

AnneTwacky · 02/10/2022 13:00

No...

No more do-overs for the Tories.

We need a general election. Let us decide who we want to lead us out of this mess.

Other than his stint in education, Gove has generally been a competent cabinet minister. I have friends who have worked in his departments and they all really liked and respected him. In contrast, I’ve heard some horror stories from friends re other cabinet ministers.

He feels like one of the few heavy weight grown-ups left in the party. I suspect if he starts mobilising, LT is in trouble.

He knows his briefs and respects the roles of civil servants
Even in the DfE he was generally respected

Booklover3 · 02/10/2022 13:02

It feels a bit like pass the parcel except it’s pass the PM job.

SamPellegrino · 02/10/2022 13:04

Liz Truss was a terrible minister in the DfE

I mean, times are truly, truly bad if Michael Fucking Gove is seen as any sort of saviour.

Signed,

Yes he’s the only hope other than a GE

No, I know why people don't like Michael Gove , but today there was a glimmer that a few of the party are unhappy with how it's all been handled. Unless his a just a lone wolf, maybe he could stir up some trouble ?
He backed Rishi for PM a while ago and he isn't at the conference this week, so I've read.
It all feels as if a coup may take place , but Michael Gove is an enigma and he'll need back up.

Whenever I’m having a bad day, I watch this on repeat. Never fails to raise a chuckle, especially at the looking back bit.

Thank you for sharing that, that's hilarious!! 😆

noblegiraffe · 02/10/2022 13:21

but Michael Gove is an enigma

God no, if there's a back to be stabbed, he'll be right in the thick of it.

At least I suppose that is a form of levelling-up.

Michael Gove would not be making these kinds of moves now unless he has back-up. His style is more cold and calculating to go out on a limb.

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 13:28

Who will back Gove up though? The ERG won't.
Boris Johnson has been in and out of his favour over the years , but has he completely disappeared?
It's all intriguing.

roundtable · 02/10/2022 13:32

Maybe he was on his way back from his latest clubbing adventure and decided to gatecrash the show and put his two pennies worth in.

I despise the lot of them.

but tbh any of them, including Gove, would be an improvement on Truss.

antelopevalley · 02/10/2022 13:36

MrsBennetsPoorNerves · 02/10/2022 10:07

Absolutely not. The Tories had their chance to pick a new leader. The one they picked is proving a disaster.

They should not be able to pick another one without putting it back to the people in a general election.

I agree with this.
A general election is now the only way forward.

He is a hideous snake, but if he's willing to take down the other charletons on the sinking ship with him, so be it.

Why pay the guy complements even his friends think he is a slimy snake, in any case Truss will be here for the next couple of years.

antelopevalley · 02/10/2022 13:39

He comes across as incredibly smarmy.

I dont think anyone is paying him compliments- just challenging the ascertain that he is rude.

the80sweregreat · 02/10/2022 13:41

Michael Gove did row back a bit at the end. He is in Birmingham, so he isn't boycotting the conference.
He just made it clear that these policies are not the way forwards.
It's a shame he didn't speak up before now, might have saved 65 billion pounds :(
They must have had an inkling they were going to do or say something after the Queen's funeral ? Or maybe they thought it was just about the fuel bills and were surprised at the other measures ? Either way , it's not looking good for the PM.

PestorPeston · 02/10/2022 13:41

I've notice Arlene Foster is also coming across as rather reasonable this week. times must be quite weird.

Conservative chair Jake Berry has said that any MP voting against the budget type event will have the whip removed. I'm assuming that Gove and Sunak have arranged for about 137 MPs to rebel.

Neolara · 02/10/2022 13:42

I can't quite believe that I'm about to defend Gove, but here goes....

His backstabbing consisted of saying that he felt Boris was an unsuitable person to become Prime Minister. I'm pretty sure the vast majority of the country now believe this to be true. He just came to this conclusion much earlier than most (and admittedly after campaigning alongside Boris). He wasn't wrong though.

anniegun · 02/10/2022 13:42

Suggesting Gove should be PM just reminds everyone how low the bar has become
