Bring back capital punishment?

LittleMaroonRidingHood · 01/10/2022 13:03

This thread was prompted by the news item about a possible discovery of the remains of a victim of the 'Moors Murderers'.

Should Capital Punishment be re-instated for murder ?

YABU - The value of the offender's life should not be negated by the offender's crime.
YANBU - When someone sets out with intent to deprive someone of their life, then they automatically forfeit the right to get any older.

Yes, we should bring it back. We are spending Billions keeping people alive, that can never be reintroduced into society and who have committed unforgivable crimes. They don't pay tax, they don't contribute anything and they are deadly dangerous. Why are we keeping them alive? What for?

OK you go first @TortugaRumCakeQueen
It might as well be you, amongst all the other who've been wrongfully sentenced.

OneTC · 01/10/2022 13:16

Death penalty is barbaric

Anyone who wants it should fuck off to the failed states that do it

Ponoka7 · 01/10/2022 13:16

@TortugaRumCakeQueen do we judge those in residential care the same? As said in my pp some conditions mean that the person exhibits violent behaviour.

Spanky123 · 01/10/2022 13:17

Not sure why this is even a discussion.

Giggorata · 01/10/2022 13:17

Fuck, NO.

floorida · 01/10/2022 13:17

@Believeitornot where did I say there wouldn't be miscarriages of justice or that it's a deterrent?

floorida · 01/10/2022 13:18

I simply made the point that some sentences are a joke & it's naive to think all murderers will "suffer".

TigerRag · 01/10/2022 13:18

Nope. I seem to remember it's more expensive with the death penalty because of the constant appeals, there's people who want to die and what if we get it wrong? Of course, the advances in science, etc means this is less likely than in the 60s but it still happens.

DownToTheSeaAgain · 01/10/2022 13:18

It is state sanctioned murder and totally wrong in any society that calls itself civilised.

that uses Texas as an example but it shows that it is actually a lot cheaper to have someone in prision for life without parole than it is for the death penalty.

unless your also going for not allowing people the right to appeal or the right for proper medical examination and mental health assessments before you let the state murder them.

Threadkillacilla · 01/10/2022 13:20

No.
hard time yes but no retribution, we need to be crystal clear it's never appropriate.

3peassuit · 01/10/2022 13:22

No, not under any circumstances. It’s a loathsome and barbaric practice.

WrinklesShminkles · 01/10/2022 13:24

Just resign Liz.

Snugglemonkey · 01/10/2022 13:24

Never. It is barbaric. There is no good reason for it and plenty of reasons against.

I do not understand people who want to torture etc. I do not see how that is much different than being sick enough to do the crime in the first place.

Isaidnoalready · 01/10/2022 13:27

How could we guarantee they were guilty?

What about the mentally ill?

Surely you need to be mentally ill to kill someone?

Ethically speaking is it ever right to kill a mentally ill person?

Abouttimemum · 01/10/2022 13:27

I’d like to see prisons be prisons, because they are no deterrent either. And the ‘punishment’ for abhorrent crimes need to be toughened up.

I don’t know what the answer is but it needs to change, because the scum rule this country and have no respect for anyone.

You absolutely don’t need to be mentally Ill to kill someone.

Out of interest what would you chan he about prisons? I never quite know what people want prisons to be like.

I think the central issue is what are prisons for ? Punishment or rehabilitation?

Melodiax · 01/10/2022 13:28

You replied to me saying "death is the easy way out". You realise when I was talking about suffering, I was talking about torture? Not prison sentences. I can't say I feel any remorse when you hear about certain criminals being raped in prison.

MistyGreenAndBlue · 01/10/2022 13:29

No. We need to be a lot more punitive but even that well known humanitarian William The Conquerer did away with the death penalty. And he managed to reduce violent crime quite considerably.

userxx · 01/10/2022 13:29

AnneLovesGilbert · 01/10/2022 13:04

No. It’s murder by the state. We’re better than that.

Agree. We'd be no better than them.

The answer to have better safety nets, better schooling, education alongside better funded court system. People get away with it because there aren’t enough police or court stuff to get people in the system.

having stiffer sentences is pointless if there’s no one to arrest them and no judges to try them.

DillDanding · 01/10/2022 13:30

No. Only idiots support the death penalty.

Georgeskitchen · 01/10/2022 13:32

On balance, I would sat no, but a life sentence for murder should be whole life. Nobody who deliberately takes another life should ever have freedom again
