Help me find a new washing machine

I need to sort this out today as we can't be left longer without one! There are so many, I don't know how to choose. Our current one is LG, and I really disliked it. I know many people love them. My main (minor, but really annoying) gripe is that although it lets you add to the wash, it doesn't lock the door when too full of water, so water has flooded the floor many times when I've added a missed sock! It's also not as quiet as I would have hoped. We're not in the Miele price range. Will spend up to £800. Main priorities are noise level, being able to add to wash, option to reduce the run time and reliability. If anyone has bought recently, what have you been happy with?

We can see this thread is quite old now, but if you’ve landed here looking for recommendations, we’ve recently updated our best washing machine page with lots of great options loved by Mumsnet users. We hope you find it useful. Flowers

We have a NEFF which I like and fits your list above. AO are pretty good and usually have a number of reviews to help you choose.

@ItIsMyName , thanks for the suggestion, but as far as I can tell, Neff only do integrated washing machines. I need a freestanding one.

Please don't get a Samsung. Ours was only 4 months old when it developed a fault/burning smell and had the drum replaced. It took their appalling customer service about 5 visits to deal with and I complained so much on their social media that eventually they sent a local independent company in and it was repaired in days. Their UK customer service is really odd and seems to go through some media/marketing company. I can't believe we spent over £500 on something that is so poorly made. If you read their reviews online, you'll see a common pattern about their customer service.

We had an AEG before and it was a million times more superior.

mamabear715 · 01/10/2022 13:21

I've always stuck to Indesit. Cheap & cheerful!
I don't need a million different programmes, just clean clothes, which they do, well!

userxx · 01/10/2022 13:23

Beko, short washes and timer delay. Mine is around 13 years old and never had a problem, I'll have jinxed it now.

Nsky62 · 01/10/2022 13:34

AEG look good, as are Bosch never owned either

Cosmos123 · 01/10/2022 13:41

Miele WWG360

Has got best buy and Eco buy in which magazine.
Great washing machine.

Cosmos123 · 01/10/2022 13:42

Sorry I didn't spot the cement regarding miele.

ineedanewbum · 01/10/2022 13:47

Another vote here for beko. Just replaced my 12 year old beko and bought beko again. Just like another poster - I just want clean clothes and a basic washing machine. The one I've just bought has eco washes, half hour quick wash, time delay. How urgent is it to add a forgotten sock to a wash anyway😄

Nsky62 · 01/10/2022 14:27

Adding extra times help, then the sock monster doesn’t get ‘em😂

crazeecatladee · 01/10/2022 14:33

We have had a couple of makes. Some have been washer dryers, some just washers. All have been reliable and the current one (up to now) is brilliant. It's a bottom to middle of the range Beko. It washes well, has a range of alternative settings and an option to do a real fast spin so washing will dry more quickly. What more do you want? Most machines will not allow you to open them when a critical water mark has been reached. If you want to (safely) add items after it's started you will need a top loader (American style)

mamabear715 · 01/10/2022 14:57

Sorry for interrupting the thread, but those who have Beko.. my sis has one, a few years old now but she's always insisted it doesn't wash under about 3 hours.. I equally insist it MUST have a quick wash! Am I right?

Go to the library and read the relevant Which report for free. I do this, then go to John Lewis and talk to them too.

Coastalcreeksider · 01/10/2022 19:45

I had a Bosch for 14 years but then inherited my dad's washing machine that was about a year old. A High Sense, more compact than the Bosch but has a 15 minute quick wash and the mixed fabrics takes 58 mins. It also does a really hot 95 deg machine clean.

It wasn't very expensive but I've been quite impressed with it so far.

HundredYearsOfSolitude · 01/10/2022 19:48

Samsung addwash ecobubble.
Had my previous Samsung for about 7 years with no issues, hope this one lasts as long.

IrisVersicolor · 01/10/2022 19:49

I’ve always had Miele by luck as I’m not wealthy they were already in the properties I lived in. I had to buy one recently and got a Bosch. It’s very good but it squeaks and I think 15 mins for a short wash is too short, 30 mins would be better.

IrisVersicolor · 01/10/2022 19:50

Neff and Bosch are the same manufacturer btw.

Lisarinnaslipss · 01/10/2022 19:51

I've gone through almost every brand of washing machines. They are my white goods nemesis. That being said, I'm very happy with my current zanussi. A wide range of washes which you can change the time of and a 30 minute quick wash.

I second this. One of the parts that hold the drum in the place snapped after 10 washes. The customer service made me run a cleaning cycle in case that was causing the clunking sound… caused even more damage. Took 4 weeks to get repaired, pre covid. I’d never get one again and when it breaks again will be going for a Siemens/Bosch. I miss my old Bosch.

SocksAndTheCity · 01/10/2022 19:56

I have a Smeg washer dryer which came with the flat, and I can't fault it. The different programmes are sensible, it's not noisy and the front screen has a countdown on so you know how much longer it's going to be.

Prior to that I had an Indesit one that lasted about ten years though, and I was always happy with it.

unfunnytopicalusername · 01/10/2022 19:57

Bosch. We left my beloved Bosch in our old flat and my husband bought an LG for our new house. I really dislike the LG, and miss my Bosch every wash I do.

ChilliBandit · 01/10/2022 19:59

The only thing I don’t miss about the Bosch that got left behind is the countdown timer lied to you. It would say 5 minutes left for example so you’d think oh I’ll just wait for it to finish before I go out. 3 minutes later it would say 6 minutes left.

RedRobyn2021 · 01/10/2022 19:59

We go a hoover a few weeks ago, the A rated one for £500 and it's marvellous

Sarah180818 · 01/10/2022 20:10

Samsung eco bubble. Loads of different settings, can sync to your phone. Has the drawer so you can add clothes mid wash. Its
