Then an hour later they rang again!

sounds dodgy - they can still tell you what it is regarding without contravening data protection - it is illegal to cold call after 9pm as well.

WanderingTrolley · 25/01/2008 12:02

Agree with Wisteria.

Sounds like a scam/phone phishing.

Phone them today and find out.

mumblechum · 25/01/2008 12:02

Agree sounds v. dodgy, ie poss identity phishing.

lalaa · 25/01/2008 12:03

Very insistent - sounds slightly dodgy to me too. I wouldn't give it them if they rang me in the day after that experience. If they ring again, ask them for their phone number and name and say you'll call them back. Or tell them to write.

mumzyof2 · 25/01/2008 12:04

It sounds dodgy to me too - Id have thought 6pm was late enough for them to ring. Id ring your credit card company and ask them IF somebody from their company rang you last night, just to check it was them - and if it was, complain!

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:06

Yes that did cross my mind, but my credit card company does have a habbit of ringing me late at night, they have done it before but usually tell me what it is regarding before i give away details. This man was so annoying, he had a foriegn accent, which they always do for this certain company which is why i though it was genuine.

Wisteria · 25/01/2008 12:06

If they call again, ask them which credit card company it is and if it isn't one you know then get a number and name. Bear in mind that a credit card that you don't own wouldn't be asking you for personal details on a cold call - it would just be oh we can save you oodles of money blah blah blah

Financial institutions also aren't allowed to with hold numbers (unless the rules have changed) so if you 1471 and there's no number listed then you know it's dodge

Wisteria · 25/01/2008 12:08

Oh and TPS register yourself as well so you don't receive unsolicited calls x

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:08

And i would ring to complain but i know i will just get through to another foriegn call center person who i will barely understand.

mine rang me late last night too, about 9pm. was most unimpressed.

Wisteria · 25/01/2008 12:10

which credit card company are we talking about?

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:11

No i dont get cold calls ever, im registered with TPS, it was my credit card company, he said so when he called 'i'm from blah blah visa'. I do think it was genuine, but this certain company just annoys the hell out of me, but i have a credit card with them, i just wish i had to money to clear my account and get rid.

OP posts:
VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:12

It was Capital One

scorpio1 · 25/01/2008 12:12

same here!

Wisteria · 25/01/2008 12:13

Can't you move it?

They still can't call you after 9pm. They also have to give you an idea what they are ringing about before obtaining personal information and certainly should have agreed to call back at a more reasonable time if you asked.. basic customer service skills, surely?

chopchopbusybusy · 25/01/2008 12:13

Actually, it's not necessarily dodgy (but it is bloody annoying) I had a similar call from Lloyds about my credit card. I refused to give them any details and asked them not to call again. I must have overlooked the box that said tick here if you do not want to be updated about our exciting new offers.

chopchopbusybusy · 25/01/2008 12:15

Wisteria, pretty sure cold calling rules don't apply if you are an existing customer. However, if you ask them not to call again, they do have to comply.

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:16

Scorpio1 i think you just confirmed it a was genuine call, probably the same annoying man. Do they make you confirm your details before they tell you what it is regarding?

OP posts:
scorpio1 · 25/01/2008 12:17

yes, name first line of address and postcode, or something similar. i had an annoying woman

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:17

Cant move it Wist, i have bad credit scoring

QueenOfCards · 25/01/2008 12:17

I hate that when the phone you and ask for your details when for all you know it could be someone dodgy trying to fraud you. I had someone phone me once;

Me: Hello

X: Hello who's this?

Me: Well you phoned me so why don't you tell me who i am!

scorpio1 · 25/01/2008 12:18

missed a payment

chenin · 25/01/2008 12:18

Just bear in mind.... I had a call from my credit card company at 9pm on a Sunday night and I am very glad I talked to them.

They asked me about recent transactions on my account and whether I had been buying a lot of goods from the States. When I said 'no' they alerted me to the fact that meant my card had been 'cloned' and there was expenditure totalling £2,000, all unauthorised, on my card! I was very glad I spoke to them and that they were on the ball enough to spot this....

Wisteria · 25/01/2008 12:19

Yes, that's true except they can't do tele sales and marketing calls after 9pm.

The only reason your own credit people can ring you at unsociable hours is if there is unauthorised or suspect activity on your account and even then they can give you an idea of what it is regarding before asking for name and dob.

As I said before though I am out of the game now and the regulatory bodies may have altered the rules!

VinegarTits · 25/01/2008 12:22

Scorpio1, Maybe thats why they were calling then, i missed a payment over xmas

But i already phoned them and spoke to them about it. They probably wanted to make sure i was going to pay them this month. But still bloody annoying, i mean 8.30, i was watching masterchef fgs
