To be seriously considering leaving this country?

I've lived here all my life l, have all my family and friends here but I feel desperate to get out now.

Brexit was national self harm in itself (and has made it harder to leave) but I am done with Tory island. They have destroyed everything over the last 12 years.

Had it now. Country heading for collapse.

One of the reasons I want to leave is indeed the level of dickishness in our society

There's dicks everywhere. But if you find somewhere with reduced numbers let me know.

Chateaudiaries · 01/10/2022 13:56

Hoppinggreen I was quoting the above poster and disagreeing with them. We are actually dual eu/uk nationals and leaving uk.

Different types of Dicks, I have had enough of the English ones and their inability to recognise what this country has become

Same here, best of luck to both of us 😀

It is not really better anywhere else.
Where I am affordable doctors are in short supply.
Health ins is expensive, If no insurance, costs are very steep. Dentistry is astronomical.
Flights are eyewatering and service is poor.
Our government seems to be blindly floundering
Food is already way more expensive than UK (like grapes are 12 quid a kilo/basic supermarket cheese 8 quid a kilo) and most things have gone up between 20 and 30 pct in about 3 months. Every time I go to the supermarket everything has risen.
My electricity costs have jumped 50pct.
But for some reason the news outlets are not reporting on it, like they do in UK.

Where are you?

I can see what this country has become. I can see what other countries have become. Overall, I still prefer my country. Which is fortunate really as I don't need to go to the bother of moving ( to find something that won't be there anyway).

Longdarkcloud · 01/10/2022 15:49

I feel so despondent about the situation the country is in and the lack of a positive future. I was born here but spent most of my life from a young child overseas where my parents took our family for a better future. I achieved a higher standard of education than could have been afforded here and a comfortable lifestyle. I returned here to be with my DP and after 20+ years my health has declined making it impossible for me to return “home”.
I loved feeling a part of Europe and loved enjoying the culture, love this country etc but now it has become a little island off the coast of Europe with the prospects of a third world economy.
Even a change of Govt cannot reverse the slide. Re entry into Europe, if possible, would not be on favourable terms — we never had it so good.
An educated voting public was lost when the national press became dominated by rich capitalists who brainwash their readers with “news” and opinion full of misinformation and hate.
Even a chance to change the electoral system was lost because it was not considered by those holding power to be in their self interests and this was purveyed to the general public as too complicated and unBritish. Yet the Voters in other countries, including NZ have no trouble comprehending it.
I have been unable to get adequate medical treatment for 3 years and fear my life will be shortened because of it. The great NHS is pretty much dead.
Those who feel they and their families deserve a better future have my full support

Bacibaci · 01/10/2022 17:54

The U.K. economy is in dire straits now but if finally people vote Labour in in 2 years time though they will not be able to work miracles as they will be inheriting an almighty mess I think it’s possible to improve things. A first step would be closer economic ties with EU even if re don’t rejoin. So I don’t think the situation is terminal but tough times ahead because of the last 12 years of government and at least another 2 years of mayhem.

Labour would make your energy woes worse, that’s all I can say. As for promoting more industry, hard to say. 70s Labour no, but 90s Labour did so 🤷‍♀️

LadyWithLapdog · 01/10/2022 19:16

@BerriesOnTop how do you know?

Longdarkcloud · 01/10/2022 19:35

If history is anything to go by the next Labour Govt would find things in such a mess it would have to make very unpopular decisions and at the next GE would be voted out so no stability and no continuity of planning.
So no rainbows ahead that I can see.

@StrangerYears which country are you referring to?

Dontevenstart · 01/10/2022 20:20

Germany for me. Taking lessons for the last three years. Working through both my skill set and contacts over there, and I’ll be leaving when I can. Fucking Tory bastards have played the long game and defunded everything for so many years that we’re now populated by uneducated racist pigs who are out for no-one but themselves and yet think they’re better than everyone else. Fuck that.
Europe still has a sense of Socialism that I love.

oh, chiweenie..... 'I think the UK still has many good things going for it but this crisis is a worrying time for everyone and hopefully the powers that be will take action to support people as it is very worrying for people with mortgage increases on the horizon on top of other increases.'

Our PM is LIZ TRUSS.

We're fucked.

Hopefully not immediately. Germany is in a very dark place right now (no pun intended) and there may be a rapid de-industrialisation happening this winter/spring if they cannot get a steady supply of fossil fuels.

Why do you think that? they have to buy gas at exactly the same price as we do but have 3 months supply of stored gas, the UK does not, any supply issues means we are screwed, as the North Sea gas we produce is not for our exclusive use.

The yield on German Govt bonds is 1/2 what it is in the UK, so lenders have more faith in Germany than they do the UK & that yield isn't about to drop.

The problem many brexit supporters have is that in order to justify their decision, the EU and esp Germany has to fail.

Hoppinggreen · 02/10/2022 09:16

DH is German by birth and we go regularly and know quite a few people there.
The Right wing press here and pro Brexit faction would really love everyone to believe Germany is in trouble - but it’s not.
AND if there is a fuel crisis or whatever they won’t deal with it by handing more money to rich people.

Germany was relying on Russia for half their natural gas needs. So they have had to scramble to replace that, and they won’t, so rationing will happen for both households and industries.

Britain is far less reliant on Russian gas but sensitive to the international market for O&G so it’s not like you can escape that of course. But my point is that de-industrialisation is very likely to happen in Germany, already they are on the cusp of recession and we don’t know how cold this winter will be—if it is bad, those ‘three month supply’ stocks could go fast: oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Germany-Must-Cut-Natural-Gas-Consumption-To-Avoid-Winter-Shortages.amp.html

and here is how the big multinationals will cope: www.reuters.com/business/energy/how-germanys-industrial-giants-are-preparing-winter-2022-09-27/

The family-run companies … will likely be in very deep trouble, especially once the recession is openly declared.

tbh Germany did this to themselves so I’ll not feel too sorry for them. What they should do (and I believe they are doing, quietly) is dig up coal—they have plenty of it—and fire up those old coal plants. Better to choke on smog than die of cold.

Britain too has largely fell into the same Green trap as Germany so I won’t feel all that sorry for you either.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/10/2022 09:44

@BerriesOnTop so you don’t live in the UK? You said you’re not feeling that sorry for “you”. And you deplore the Green agenda. What’s your agenda on MN? Just curious 🤨

LadyWithLapdog · 02/10/2022 09:45

Also what’s de-industrialisation? Going back to horse and cart?

I don’t live in the UK and am not British. But I have lived there back when Labour was in charge (not a bad time in retrospect) and am interested in the trans debate and as u know this is one of the only places you can have the debate.

I am also very, very against the Green movement and do believe it is responsible for Europe’s current mess (you might rather blame Brexit, Ukraine, Covid though)

The UK deindustrialised to a large extent under Thatcher, did it not? That is what I am referring to, the closure and shutting down (or moving abroad) industrial capacity
