To be seriously considering leaving this country?

I've lived here all my life l, have all my family and friends here but I feel desperate to get out now.

Brexit was national self harm in itself (and has made it harder to leave) but I am done with Tory island. They have destroyed everything over the last 12 years.

Had it now. Country heading for collapse.

Germany was relying on Russia for half their natural gas needs. So they have had to scramble to replace that, and they won’t, so rationing will happen for both households and industries.

Britain is far less reliant on Russian gas but sensitive to the international market for O&G so it’s not like you can escape that of course. But my point is that de-industrialisation is very likely to happen in Germany, already they are on the cusp of recession and we don’t know how cold this winter will be—if it is bad, those ‘three month supply’ stocks could go fast: oilprice.com/Latest-Energy-News/World-News/Germany-Must-Cut-Natural-Gas-Consumption-To-Avoid-Winter-Shortages.amp.html

and here is how the big multinationals will cope: www.reuters.com/business/energy/how-germanys-industrial-giants-are-preparing-winter-2022-09-27/

The family-run companies … will likely be in very deep trouble, especially once the recession is openly declared.

tbh Germany did this to themselves so I’ll not feel too sorry for them. What they should do (and I believe they are doing, quietly) is dig up coal—they have plenty of it—and fire up those old coal plants. Better to choke on smog than die of cold.

Britain too has largely fell into the same Green trap as Germany so I won’t feel all that sorry for you either.

Interesting, re Britain do you mean already fell into the trap or where we might be going at next GE?

@BerriesOnTop I have little interest in the trans debate. It does seem to take over an inexplicably large part of what was once the feminist boards on here.

IMO being very, very against the Green movement is a lost battle for you. The Green movement has won this one, thankfully.

Germany for me. Taking lessons for the last three years. Working through both my skill set and contacts over there, and I’ll be leaving when I can. Fucking Tory bastards have played the long game and defunded everything for so many years that we’re now populated by uneducated racist pigs who are out for no-one but themselves and yet think they’re better than everyone else. Fuck that.
Europe still has a sense of Socialism that I love.

As an EU immigrant in the UK I find this kind of posts a bit baffling to be honest.
Do you really think there are more „racist pigs“ in the UK than in Germany for instance?
I lived in Berlin for a while and while some areas are definitely very multinational I had Black friends who weren’t going to certain parts of the city and wouldn’t consider moving to the countryside after seeing all the AfD posters there.

My husband and I are probably too old now. We’d struggle for working visas and have dependent family relying on us, but I was thinking yesterday about our children and how there’s not going to be much here for them when they finish their education. Taxes are going to be high, they’re not going to be able to afford their own home and we are probably going to have high unemployment. I’m preparing myself for them leaving the country, and I wouldn’t blame them.

When I read anti-fracking posts here, I feel like it’s already done, it seems very little domestic support for it. Europe doesn’t seem to understand how critical fossil fuels are to a modern economy, you just can’t get around it.

Even if fracking doesn’t solve this year’s problem, increasing overall supply is not a bad thing—imagine where you could be if you had pushed, for example, nuclear through ten years ago! But I do recall people saying then that it would take a decade to come online so why bother, etc etc

and I see this same mistake now with fracking. It’s not just the UK that has banned it, Germany did too and I believe Ireland won’t even allow fracked gas to be shipped through its ports 🤦‍♀️

LivingOnAnIsland · 02/10/2022 10:17

Do you really think anyone will miss you? Do what you like, nobody cares.

TheSimpleLife88 · 02/10/2022 10:26

I used to live abroad in an EU country that a lot of Brits want to move to, and I'm also well travelled.
I'm so glad I came back home and I still prefer living here in the long term, even with everything that's been going on lately!
I've got friends that have relocated to countries in Asia and Germany. By the sounds of it some things are better than the UK, but other things are worse. We just don't hear about the day to day problems in other countries because we don't live there. No country is perfect.
I'm hopeful that things will improve here, once the Tories are out that is!

People who leave are the very folk we want to keep.. medics, AHPs, Teachers, they aren't people like you, who we have far too many of.

Fracking is bonkers. All that drilling, all those chemical and that contaminated waste water, what could possibly go wrong...

How do you know what LivingOnAnIsland does though? Unless, by people like you, you mean people with different opinions.

LadyWithLapdog · 02/10/2022 15:01

I took “people like you” to mean people who have a clear indication what the thread is likely to be about but come on it nonetheless to be nasty and rain on the parade. Not just a difference of opinion.

And who just want to act like petulant teenagers rather than have an opinion and share it (whether I agree or not)

Good one ;

But really what do people want don’t go blah blah. People are focusing on their own lives. People leave and arrive every day it doesn’t need to be this big deal

Just go and enjoy, don’t look back.

Information? Advice? A moan? Hope?

Mnetters looking at moving abroad have always used the forum as a sounding board.🤷‍♀️
