I hate foxes

Honestly I HATE them. I mean I know they look sort of nice but they are just awful. I've taken to trying to shoot them with a super soaker like a crazy woman not that it makes any bloody difference.
They scream all night, that horrible noise that sounds like someone being murdered. They have figured out how to get into our 'fox proof' food waste bins so we often go out to see manky bits of food strewn around. And if we manage to keep ours somewhere they can't get to it then a neighbour will have probably forgotten so it will still be up the pavement. We had to stop using the milkman because they figured out how to knock the milk bottles over so the foil lid would be dislodged and then milk would go everywhere and stink, and they'd probably only lick a little bit of it and just leave the rest in a big smelly puddle, they terrorise my poor cat, they dig my grass and they like to mark their territory with diarrhoea. Leaving little pools of it on our stuff. There's a load which has gone partly on the wall, then run down it and pooled at the bottom this morning. Ugh. Any ideas how I can get the little fuckers to bugger off? We've tried those noise things now and they make no difference.
There is a massive problem in this area. If you remember the news story where a fox went into a house and killed a baby a few years back that wasn't far from here...
Help!

The screeching is usually territorial or in mating season in winter. I think I would double up on existing fox proof measures and not leave things out over night. I'm trying to think of a scenario where a fox can sneak into the house without me noticing and I'm struggling with that particular one at the moment. I think I'd notice but that's probably because I have a dog and he'd want to tear it apart. Speak to some pest controllers not necessarily to get them to come in but to ask them what sort of deterrents they can suggest.

mydogisthebest · 26/09/2022 09:00

I love foxes. Yes they can be a pain with the noise they make and the pooing in the garden but they are living creatures and humans have destroyed a lot of the areas where they live so who can blame them trying to find food.

It's totally untrue that a fox killed a baby. I know someone who works with fox rescue and also helps people who have a problem with them in their garden etc. He said it's just rubbish that a fox did that. The parents had a dog but they lied and said they didn't.

Mmmmdanone · 26/09/2022 09:01

They are total vandals aren't they? They destroy things. I have to think every night if I have left anything in the garden that I don't want destroyed. They also dig up my planters. It has got so much worse jn the last year or 2. Think the population has just exploded around here. If we take dog out in the evening we'll see at least 2 when just walking around the block, and the dog goes nuts which isn't the foxes fault but it's a total pain!

LucyInTheSkyWithDiamond · 26/09/2022 09:02

Fox shit stinks to high heaven. I learnt this the hard way when I stepped in it once 🤢. They also are inclined to shit right in the middle of walkways etc as it is how they clearly mark their turf.

Someone told me that the screaming noise is them mating. Apparently, it's quite painful for the vixen, so it's quite disturbing to hear (assuming that's true and not something my friend told me to freak me out).

There are so many of them around now and they definitely aren't scared of humans at all.

I'm sure they are intelligent animals etc, but I'm not a massive fan. Not a lot we can do about them though. If they're destroying your stuff though, you can get those noise emitter things and stuff you can put on your garden to discourage them.

WorkingItOutAsIGo · 26/09/2022 09:04

There was no news story where a fox killed a baby.

There was a story where a couple claimed a fox had bitten their baby/babies (I think they had two). But commentators noted they had two poorly trained terriers in the house.

😂 The entitlement/ignorance/obliviousness in these posts.

‘Screeching’ is natural to them, they don’t know that’s your driveway, ground is ground to them, and they’re looking in the bins because they’re hungry and looking for food.

They don’t understand property or mess or tresspassing ffs 😂 They're animals.

None of which changes the fact that they are a massive nuisance to some of us! It’s not entitled to have a rant about foxes. None of us are suggesting killing them or owt.

waterlego · 26/09/2022 09:10

I haven’t found any stories about a fox killing a baby, but I found at least three about babies/children being attacked and injured by a fox. No reason to think it couldn’t happen. Obviously rare but best not to give them the opportunity to come in the house.

JackieDaws · 26/09/2022 09:12

Diddums.

It's because of people like you that means the government will get away with scrapping 705 laws that protect nature and the environment.

If it means that much to you, get a sonic cat scarer from the RSPB which works with foxes as well as cats.

And no fox killed a baby. The parents lied thet a fox attacked their baby. You just made the death up for emotional manipulation to get people on your side.

SoupDragon · 26/09/2022 09:13

Someone told me that the screaming noise is them mating

unless they are mating all year round, this isn't true. Also, I've seen them shrieking at each other from a distance. They may well shriek whilst mating but that certainly isn't the only time. It's just the noise they make.

my kids and I used to sing along to that "What does the fox say?" song and then make a god awful shrieking noise at the right moment.

Puppypads · 26/09/2022 07:41

I hate them with the fire of 1000 suns.
animal lovers look away now*
The only way to get rid of them is either 1. Get a dog or 2. Get the pest control people out. And by pest control I mean a man with a shotgun who will kill as many of the fuckers as possible.

Pure scum

That's people with your attitude not the foxes

AlwaysGinPlease · 26/09/2022 09:17

I prefer foxes to many people. The attacking babies is a myth. Foxes territory is constantly built on. Where do you expect them to go 🙄 Some awful comments here. True colors shown.

brianixon · 26/09/2022 09:17

Foxes are a real nuisance to people serious about conserving small animals. Instead of protecting everything as we do now, we need to be selective. The pressures of changes to habitat caused by farming changes, because of climate changing. New crops have been developed.
Increase in English human population and spread of urban areas are main causes.

Loss of ground nesting birds such as skylarks. Loss of hedgehogs and near extinction of red squirrels have been magnified by increase in protection of foxes and badgers.
The increase in grey squirrels is causing death everywhere. They plunder nests for eggs and young garden birds.
The bloody magpies are now protected so fewer robins and finches.

We must change and protect the victims not the predators.

I'm sure it was just billocks that friend told me, but apparently they're pretty silent outside of mating season

How horrible for you. How dare these creatures try to survive and life in "our world" !!!

KweenieBeanz · 26/09/2022 09:22

I never understand these posts, there are foxes round me (we see them last thing at night regularly) and we never experience all these issues? Never raid bins, no issues with diarrhoea all over, scattered rotting rubbish on the road, screeching noises? We very very occasionally see a small dryish scat somewhere but that's it??

Betahydroxybutyrate · 26/09/2022 09:22

DazzlePaintedBattlePants · 26/09/2022 07:36

They’re complete pests. YANBU.

You mean WE are the pests, constantly encroaching in their territory and destroying their homes?

SoupDragon · 26/09/2022 09:23

apparently they're pretty silent outside of mating season

someone needs to tell our local foxes that then.

Qwerkie · 26/09/2022 09:24

urban foxes are so brazen because there are people who think they’re cute so they’ll feed them. Their pleasure at feeding the foxes outweighs anything else - that’s if they even think about the impact of what they’re doing. Which they don’t because they’re “helping” the foxes. Foxes don’t need our help.

The attacking babies is a myth.

Is it though? Why wouldn't they attack a baby if the opportunity arose? It's surely no different to attacking a chicken or cat.

Faciadipasta · 26/09/2022 09:28

Ok PP is right. I remembered it wrong. The news article wasn't that the baby was killed, it was attacked. Sorry about that. I didn't bloody make it up though to whoever said I did! And apparently the baby's finger needed to be re-attached according to Sky news so still pretty severe! And yes I'm pretty sure there is likely to be some idiot nearby who is feeding them.

There are loads of foxes by mý fathers house but they don't come near the bins or houses. They live in the factory and waste ground across the road. They've no need to scavenge though as all the neighbours feed them.

Faciadipasta · 26/09/2022 09:31

@JackieDaws I hope you don't complain if you get them your way, shittiing up your front door so it trickles down.
And I don't bloody hurt them so I'm not sure your level of vitriol was needed. You sound nuts.
