To go to A&E? I’m desperate.

Early hours of Saturday morning (48 hours ago) I woke with the worst stomach cramps. I’ve been pooing liquid ever since, over 50 times a day. I can’t keep anything in. I haven’t been sick but I feel sick. It’s getting no better, the stomach cramps are indescribable, I can’t even lie down they’re so awful. I feel like death and I’m scared of dehydration. Do I call 111? Go to A&E? DH meant to be away in London for work tomorrow and I have 2 young kids by myself. I need help.

Hope your on the mend really soon. Glad they have taken it seriously. Do you have good painkillers and something to sip on?

YukoandHiro · 26/09/2022 19:27

Glad you got the help you needed. And I hope your DH is extremely apologetic. Why do men always expect us to drop everything to look after them and then behave like we're inventing issues when we're really ill?

I got a bit overwhelmed with the thread, sorry for not updating sooner. I went to A&E and they were so lovely. They hooked me up to a drip and I gave not one but three stool samples. Should have the results back within 48 hours. I’m home now. They said I did the right thing by going in, although I’m sure they say that to everyone. DH seems fairly sheepish about his huffing and puffing earlier. Will update the thread when I get the results.

Good. Are you feeling any better?

Why would you take your bug to A&E?

You're some Doctor who can diagnose without even meeting the OP. There's medical professionals on this thread telling the OP to go to A and E !

I'm late to the thread OP but I had something similar years ago after eating chicken and it was diagnosed as campylobacter.
It took some shifting, I was off was off work for about 10 days, but I've not had it since.
Hope you get better soon OP💐

I was going to add this - had campylobacter from chicken dripping onto seafood. It was grim.

justasking111 · 26/09/2022 19:36

Christmas turkey put my friend in hospital. You need to inform environmental health when you get the results. The eatery needs checking out

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/09/2022 19:41

glad you got some treatment and were not kept in, which is a relief.

Crikeyalmighty · 26/09/2022 20:13

I would be quite suprised if it was noravirus , as I've had that 3 times and not only horrendous diarrhoea but was violently sick as well each time, I actually feinted with it.
Does Sound more like food poisoning - me and H once had this at the same time from a Chinese takeaway - we had a 11 month old at the time too. Hope it eases off soon OP!!!

mathanxiety · 26/09/2022 20:29

Diarrhea is the standard American spelling, for anyone concerned about the lack of an O.

OP, glad you went and glad you were seen and treated with the IV.

They absolutely do not tell everyone who goes to A&E that they were right to go.

Fingers crossed your sample will turn up something they can recognise and treat.

mathanxiety · 26/09/2022 20:36

They won't give you antibiotics until they know what they're dealing with.

Hope H apologises and that he canceled his trip.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 26/09/2022 20:37

they can give broad spectrum antibiotics, but since they have taken a couple of samples that is a moot point

Somethingneedstochange · 26/09/2022 20:43

My son would be as well. Luckily he has a good immune system and always recovers quickly.

MrAutumnal · 26/09/2022 20:49

Honestly who cares what the spelling is and pedantry about abs. OP did the right thing as she needed a proper diagnosis for further treatment, as well as IV fluids.

hope you’re feeling better soon OP and glad you had sympathetic treatment.

KitKat1985 · 26/09/2022 20:52

Hope you feel better soon OP. x

rosepelargonium · 26/09/2022 20:56

@Havanawinter, so glad to hear you were treated well in A&E - also wondering if you had any antibiotics, or if they’re waiting on results?
Hope your symptoms are settling

RosesAndHellebores · 26/09/2022 20:57

Thank you for updating op. I have been thinking of you throughout the day.

Get well soon Flowers

Cupofteaonesugar · 26/09/2022 21:09

So glad you got some fluid in you OP, I bet that has done you the world of good and will help settle your tummy!
I was thinking a few years ago I had a horrendous tummy upset and it was traced to a parasitic Which I must've consumed from water. I can't remember the name of it... but it went on for about ten days!
I wonder if it's the same for you?
I really hope you're feeling better, an upset tummy truely is the worst ♥️

Cupofteaonesugar · 26/09/2022 21:10

Parasite* 😅

Crayfishforyou · 26/09/2022 21:12

They wouldn’t have given you a drip if they didn’t think you needed it OP. I hope you feel better soo

Queenieloveforever · 26/09/2022 21:20

Hope you are on the mend how horrid x

Giardia?

Glad you got help @Havanawinter and I hope you're feeling better!

whatisheupto · 26/09/2022 21:25

Sending well wishes OP, I had similar years ago and it is unbelievably painful and awful. I hope your DH is stepping up now, this is no time for twattish behaviour. He might need a firm telling, so now might be the time to tell him how it is and what he needs to do. Nothing worse than being very ill with young children. Good luck and hope he starts looking after you.

marmaladepop · 26/09/2022 21:28

I had something similar to this last year. Temperature came on very quickly then the nausea (wasn't sick but felt it), but for the bright yellow diarrhoea went on for about 3 weeks and I lost half a stone. Stool sample was negative, however had eaten a fancy salmon taco when out for tea the night before. Best thing I bought was wet wipes and a big tub of Sudocrem as my bottom felt like it was on fire. Couldn't sit down it was sore but the bright yellow colour of the poo was so weird. Took about 6 weeks before I could heal the skin and sit down again for any period of time. Awful. Wishing you a speedy recovery X

5YearsLeft · 26/09/2022 21:43

OP, I’m so glad. I was really, really concerned when you said 50 times. I mean, even when I’ve known people to have really severe diarrhea, it’s not been that many times. I think even when I had it out both ends with food poisoning and had to be rehydrated in hospital myself, I don’t think I’d gone 50 times in a day. You must just feel absolutely flattened and shattered. And then blood in your stool! (Try not to panic; hopefully it’ll be like when I vomited too much and I started vomiting blood but it’s only because all the vomiting tore something superficial in my throat). You ABSOLUTELY did the right thing by going to A&E, and no, they don’t say that to everyone. I’ve seen them sort of hem and haw about it to someone before and they ended up telling her, “Well… if you felt you needed to come, then I suppose you had to come.” Oh gosh, I got second hand embarrassment just hearing, and I remember thinking, if there’s anything really wrong with that woman, like endometriosis, they’ve just been utter bitches to her… ANYWAY. Point is, they wouldn’t tell you that you belonged in hospital if you didn’t. And you DEFINITELY needed a trip to hospital! Can’t believe your husband was such a twat. Was it because of his trip??? Was he just trying to insist that you needed to pull it together and it was “just a bit of stomach trouble,” and he needed to get to his VERY IMPORTANT meeting? UGH. Anyway. I do so very much hope they get some results from the stool samples (I mean, talk about proof you should have been there - able to give three samples! It’s not funny at all but it’s very darkly funny, like pitch black darkly funny) and then you can have the correct treatment and be on the mend in a hurry. Good luck!!!!

VeronicaFranklin · 26/09/2022 22:11

Ring 111, your GP, go to A&E...I think you know the answer to this. Not sure any one on this forum could give you advice that replaces being seen by a medically trained person.
