To go to A&E? I’m desperate.

Early hours of Saturday morning (48 hours ago) I woke with the worst stomach cramps. I’ve been pooing liquid ever since, over 50 times a day. I can’t keep anything in. I haven’t been sick but I feel sick. It’s getting no better, the stomach cramps are indescribable, I can’t even lie down they’re so awful. I feel like death and I’m scared of dehydration. Do I call 111? Go to A&E? DH meant to be away in London for work tomorrow and I have 2 young kids by myself. I need help.

Hi OP it's been said already but nasty bugs can lurk in restaurant chicken. What you describe resembles a salmonella infection I got from a restaurant meal.

You've got to get this checked out also because with the best will in the world you can't be 100% sure you won't infect the kids. Some gastric disease agents are extremely spreadable.

I hope you get some help, whether from DH or elsewhere. Gastric infections are nasty.

Mariposista · 26/09/2022 17:06

Hospitals are for ill people and you are very ill. Dehydration from severe Diarrhea can become life threatening. Ignore the silly posters banging on about ‘stay away’, get yourself treated!

Somethingneedstochange · 26/09/2022 17:13

My son was like this. I had to put a stool sample in at the doctor's. That night the bleeding started and he was admitted to hospital. He was discharged the next day I got a phonecall later on to say I had to pick some antibiotics up he had food poisoning (campala bacta). Nobody else in our house had it so no a clue where he got it. He wasn't in nursery so eating the same food as me.

9thlife · 26/09/2022 17:14

I had salmonella poising.
gp had to send a prescription to stop the vomiting and diarrhoea as it wouldn’t stop.
i had chicken, 24hours later it started.
the pain was awful. I also had the sweats ( I was also sweating and cold).
i should have reported the places that have it me.

Salmonella's a notifiable disease in the UK, so you should have been contacted by the authorities after your GP completed the notification form. That's what happened with me. I didn't have to pro-actively report anyone - I just answered their questions when they phoned me.

Haggisfish3 · 26/09/2022 17:29

I hope you’ve gone to a and e. Could well be campylobacter which is horrendous.

IsAinmDummm · 26/09/2022 17:30

I hope you're OK OP, it sounds nasty.
To those saying "I can't believe you'd go to A&E with this...", for poisoning can be fatal. Having extreme diarrhoea for 48+ hours, with blood in stools, is serious! And will need medical attention.

IsAinmDummm · 26/09/2022 17:31

For poisoning = food poisoning!

Unidentified1 · 26/09/2022 17:42

Are you OK OP?

Wouldloveanother · 26/09/2022 17:56

OP has had a million posts asking if she’s ok. So she’s either very much not ok, or hasn’t seen them. Give it a rest and she’ll reply in her own time.

Ilovemyfairylights · 26/09/2022 17:57

These are the symptoms I had from campylobacter food poisoning which can only be diagnosed from a stool sample. Originally I was diagnosed with gastroenteritis, I had no vomiting and didn’t suspect food poisoning . I was prescribed really strong antibiotics for two weeks and was off work for a month as it made me so ill. I never knew where I got it from, no one else in the family had it, Gp did have to report it to local council and I had to say where I had eaten but it can take between 2 to 10 days for symptoms to develop so hard to say what could have caused it. Definitely ring 111 you need treatment asap. Hope you feel better soon.

Iamacatslave · 26/09/2022 18:06

Please let us know how you are.

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 26/09/2022 18:29

Hopefully op is now in a hospital bed, sleeping deeply with the relief of being looked after, a drip in her hand and dosed up on painkillers and whatever else she needs.

She'll be beyond exhausted.

knitnerd90 · 26/09/2022 18:31

Hopefully OP has been seen already, but the advice here (USA) is that if you can't keep fluids down, your skin tents when you pinch, or there's blood in the stool, you should go to hospital. Even if a GP could take a sample, they can't give IV medications or rehydration which isn what severe diarrhoea may need. I would go with those symptoms even though it would cost me $200.

Havanawinter · 26/09/2022 18:39

I got a bit overwhelmed with the thread, sorry for not updating sooner. I went to A&E and they were so lovely. They hooked me up to a drip and I gave not one but three stool samples. Should have the results back within 48 hours. I’m home now. They said I did the right thing by going in, although I’m sure they say that to everyone. DH seems fairly sheepish about his huffing and puffing earlier. Will update the thread when I get the results.

Wishing you a swift recovery

RIPQueen · 26/09/2022 18:56

I would be interested to hear what you have. I experienced something similar to this in the spring and it was so bad I was googling “dysentery” and crying at 2am but despite being pregnant the hospital didn’t want me in so I had to wait it out and hope the bleeding was just from my arse being burned raw by acidic poo.

awful. It did go after 3 days though. A friend’s husband then had similar so I think it was actually just a horrendous bug. I’m sorry you’re not well!

Softplayhooray · 26/09/2022 18:57

You poor thing I am so glad you went to A&E! You could have very easily passed out with dehydration and tanking blood sugar leaving the little ones without anyone to look after them and you very ill and untreated. It doesn't bear thinking about. Never hesitate in this kind of situation! Food poisoning caused me to pass out once, thank God my DH was with me at the time.

cakewench · 26/09/2022 19:02

I'm glad you've been seen, OP 💐

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 26/09/2022 19:05

So pleased you went, op! Hope you're feeling marginally less awful post-drip and getting lots of rest now you're home Flowers

Enko · 26/09/2022 19:08

glad you have been seen op

Lovemusic33 · 26/09/2022 19:10

OP, this happened to me just over a year ago, I went to A&E, the stomach pains were like labour pains and everything was going straight through me but I wasn’t vomiting and was still hungry, I went on for a few days before I ended up in A&E. it turned out to be salmonella but by the time I got the results I was over the worst of it, just took a while to get over the lack of food in my body. I wouldn’t be surprised if this is similar to what you have. I hope you feel better soon.

fetchacloth · 26/09/2022 19:20

I'm late to the thread OP but I had something similar years ago after eating chicken and it was diagnosed as campylobacter.
It took some shifting, I was off was off work for about 10 days, but I've not had it since.
Hope you get better soon OP💐

Deckthewallswithpaintandplaydough · 26/09/2022 19:24

wonderful news op. Hope the sample come back all clear and all you need is a few days of rest and recovery. Sending lots of love from GOSH (dd says hi to, or she would but she’s currently vomiting over me)
