To go to A&E? I’m desperate.

Early hours of Saturday morning (48 hours ago) I woke with the worst stomach cramps. I’ve been pooing liquid ever since, over 50 times a day. I can’t keep anything in. I haven’t been sick but I feel sick. It’s getting no better, the stomach cramps are indescribable, I can’t even lie down they’re so awful. I feel like death and I’m scared of dehydration. Do I call 111? Go to A&E? DH meant to be away in London for work tomorrow and I have 2 young kids by myself. I need help.

I was going to add this - had campylobacter from chicken dripping onto seafood. It was grim.

Me too. I remember being so hydrated that I was hallucinating - I thought I was on a roof with a small blond boy with a red balloon, and I wanted to grab the balloon and fly off the roof. It was absolutely vile. I felt ill for a month. Campylobacter shoots out your stomach lining too - I couldn't eat chilli or anything rich for ages. I was 19 and had rarely been ill before, was one of the worst times of my life.

Ameanstreakamilewide · 26/09/2022 22:43

Bless the OP,...I feel dreadful for her. I hope she's on the mend.

Now then, her husband... I mean, really?
What an absolute twat?? Was he honestly thinking that his business trip was more important than his seriously unwell wife??

This would genuinely cloud my feelings about him.

Nocutenamesleft · 26/09/2022 22:54

Wait. So the last time you ate was Friday night?

if that’s correct I’d suggest A And E. you’ll need all your electrolytes checking. Sodium etc.

if you came to the A and E where I work. This is what I’d check for sure

PartyHelp · 26/09/2022 22:58

I would put money on it being campylobacter. I had it and I thought I was going to die, I could barely sit on the toilet I was so exhausted. Glad you are feeling a bit better op.

merrymelodies · 26/09/2022 22:58

Glad to hear that you're on the mend, OP.Daffodil I hope this thread has enlightened some of the numpties who clearly have no idea as to how dangerous untreated severe diarrhoea can be.

Letsbefriends · 26/09/2022 23:07

Ah, good to hear you got checked out. Hope you get the results quickly so they can treat the cause. Sounds horrendous.

SarahJinx · 26/09/2022 23:09

Another bet for campylobacter here. I got it from a Chicken burger too. I remember those every two minute poos and the hideous rolling cramps. Hope you’re feeling a little better OP, I had a liquid diet for nine days to get over mine, be super kind to your bowel - Stick to jelly and clear soup if eating aggravates it .

roughtyping · 26/09/2022 23:11

Oh poor you OP. I hope you're getting a good rest. My son has campylobacter at the end of last year and it was tough going for him. It did last a few weeks, however the worst was definitely the initial 3 days. After that he was ok in himself, just needed to go to the toilet a lot. He was miserable at the start though so really feel for you.

Solonge · 26/09/2022 23:26

Taking anything to stop the diarrhoea when you dont know the cause isnt a good idea. My friend had something a couple of weeks ago that sounded just like this, in the end her adult daughter took her to casualty and they admitted her....gastritis...they put up an IV drip to rehydrate her...no drugs to stop the diarrhoea. She was in hospital for 8 days....they took samples to identify the cause and then gave antibiotics as it was a bacterial infection.

JacquelineCarlyle · 26/09/2022 23:39

So glad you've been seen Op. Hope you feel better soon!

Kixx · 26/09/2022 23:53

GobbolinoTheWitchesCat · 26/09/2022 02:14

Bugs don't work that way...if they did every infection would be treated with enemas

Exactly..🙏.this made me laugh

Mxyzptlk · 27/09/2022 00:44

Good news OP, that you are getting it checked out.
Wishing you better soon, whatever it is.

RawChickenTray · 27/09/2022 00:52

Well done for looking after yourself, I think it’s notifiable with food poisoning

I got a bit overwhelmed with the thread, sorry for not updating sooner. I went to A&E and they were so lovely. They hooked me up to a drip and I gave not one but three stool samples. Should have the results back within 48 hours. I’m home now. They said I did the right thing by going in, although I’m sure they say that to everyone. DH seems fairly sheepish about his huffing and puffing earlier. Will update the thread when I get the results.

Glad you’re getting sorted and your dh has stopped being an idiot. Hope you feel better soon

mackthepony · 27/09/2022 02:03

Good to hear your update, Havana.

Rest up, take it easy and hope you feel better soon 💐💐

What I find”scary” is people starting mumsnet threads when they are supposedly at death’s door. Even worse are those threads about children in seemingly horrendous I’ll health asking an anonymous chat forum for their thoughts. Not that is scary

Don't be ridiculous. I was in Resus and still managed to message my family. MN would have told me my symptoms weren't serious yet I was in Resus within 10 minutes of turning up to a&e

It's also the constant posts of don't go to a&e /gpwhich makes posters second guess whether they should actually be going. I didn't go to GP for days because I didn't want to be seen I was wasting time. Just thought I had a midish UTI which would get better by itself. I don't go to the GP as it is.
Took 24 hours rehydration , 3 different antibiotics and insulin and a week in hospital. Now on insulin for life.
I had been sick once, mild ache when I went the loo and very very tired. It was DKA without A

fairgame84 · 27/09/2022 10:54

@bruffin I totally agree the don't go to A&E posts are scary.
I worked in children's A&E years ago. I remember looking after a 3yo that had bloody shits after a family bbq. She was well in herself and playing happily in the cubicle. The sort that MN would say doesn't need A&E. Unfortunately she had food poisoning and ended up on dialysis later that day as her bloods were all out and her kidneys weren't working properly.
People can look well despite being seriously unwell.
This myth that you should only be in A&E if you're pretty much unconscious is dangerous.

I hope the drip made you feel a bit better. I’m so pleased you got some medical attention - and no,I don’t think they were just saying it: you were right to go. They wouldn’t have bothered taking samples if they thought it was nothing.

Ihatecocomelon · 27/09/2022 11:41

Hope it's just a bad bug. Hope you get results soon

Longdarkcloud · 27/09/2022 11:53

Wishing you a speedy recovery OP.
I agree with posters re the severity of campylobacter symptoms. I experienced it as severe gastroenteritis plus influenza after a Chinese chicken meal. I was completely out of action for a week and know of a rugby team whose members collectively lost an incredible amount of weight. I don’t know why food poisoning is always linked to salmonella and campylobacter is rarely mentioned.
