Quote the OPs opening me

Really?

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/09/2022 13:07

Damn. Page glitches

When they quote the opening message in their response? Surely if you are commenting on the thread it is assumed you are replying to the OP?

Fair enough quote later posts if the message is specifically for that comment, but being able to quote the opening post is pointless, takes up thread space, and just gives me the RAGE.

Grin and yes, I accept I'm leaving myself wide open to having everyone quote my now error filled opening post for laughs.

YANBU

It's so annoying and clogs the chain up

Thepeopleversuswork · 24/09/2022 13:11

Depends. A couple of lines of text are useful for context.

If someone spools a chain of four 500 word posts in a long loop its a PITA and not necessary.

wwyd2021medicine · 24/09/2022 13:13

I've also seen this on the first reply to a 5 paragraph opening post which seems particularly pointless

PinkLadyApples8 · 24/09/2022 13:14

yeah, I think I might do it occasionally out of habit (who knows), but if I'm looking at a message I respond to that message and don't quote.

I am going to say yabu though, because there is so much that is annoying about mumsnet and if you get enraged with any of it... it's not good for your stress levels! You need to chill and relax and just accept it's eccentricities. Because it's just getting more annoying every day! 😁

Toottooot · 24/09/2022 13:15

I get the rage wi opening posts that dinna contain the full message.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 24/09/2022 13:15

Haha

I like the quote facility, this is one of the worst forums Ive seen in that its impossible to follow conversations, people just quote a name or a bit of someones post without it being clear what they're answering, they copy and past a paragraph or someone elses posts into their own so the post doesnt even make sense, posts arent numbered etc etc. The pages are so numerous its impossible to scroll back to find what you think they might be referencing, can never find it.

So l like the quote facility, makes conversations easier to follow

Quote the OPs opening me

Yeah. Same.

🤣

VladmirsPoutine · 24/09/2022 13:20

I think once a post has been quoted once, maybe twice that's enough otherwise it becomes too hard to follow.

BeyondsEnergyObsession · 24/09/2022 13:21

Actually I half disagree with myself there. It is useful when you're twenty pages in to a thread, where the OP has since clarified certain things, and a resolution has been found, and someone pops in without RTFT and replies to the OP. Then it is helpful to know that they clearly haven't RTFT

saraclara · 24/09/2022 13:21

Drives me mad, especially when it's a novel of an OP. I have no idea why people do this.

bellac11 · 24/09/2022 13:22

Also, lets say I now go out, when I get back and this shows up in my 'threads Im on' it only shows me the last 2 posts, there might be over a 100 since this post Im making, I then have to scroll back to find this post to start reading so I dont miss posts

And on top of that, someone 100 posts later might say 'yes bellac you're right', without quoting what Ive said, and then I have to try to work out what they're referring to as I dont know how to find my own posts, and rarely remember what Ive said! Or other people's previous posts. Or threads. None of it is clear.

Pixiedust1234 · 24/09/2022 13:22

They shouldn't quote the opening post, especially since the update means its at the top of every page anyway.

TidyDancer · 24/09/2022 13:23

On multiple occasions on site stuff, it's been requested that quoting the opening post specifically be disabled. It's really annoying and unnecessary.

TwocksAway · 24/09/2022 13:23

YANBU.

I’ve seen people do it only 5 or 6 responses in so there is absolutely no need to quote the OP.
Its very ‘I’ve got the best response ever. Read my post’.

SpongeBob2022 · 24/09/2022 13:27

I used to be on Baby Centre. It's set up differently and much easier to comment. You can either comment, or reply to someone else's comment within the thread only. With Mumsnet it's confusing to have the option of reply or just write a comment on the OP. I'm assuming new people aren't sure which to do.

PinkLadyApples8 · 24/09/2022 13:28

Well, thinking about it, I often quote what I am replying to so I can see it at the same time I am typing. I intend to clear the quote before pressing send but sometimes forget. Right now, I am not responding to a message and I can't see the thread at all.... So maybe some people do that too?

2bazookas · 24/09/2022 13:34

At OP Surely if you are commenting on the thread it is assumed you are replying to the OP?

Not at all. Any later poster might be addressing any of the later responders (not OP)

That's why it's important, and polite, to quote/make clear which post your comment applies to.

ABBAsnumberonefan · 24/09/2022 13:44

Surely you just quote / reply to a user if it’s a later comment on the thread. OPs can be long! Or you could just say “OP” at the start of your post if you want to make it extra clear.

NiqueNique · 24/09/2022 13:47

IT PISSES ME OFF!!

Have ranted about it before...

There’s NEVER any need to quote the OP as we all know that’s what the discussion pertains to!!

The quote function is supposed to be used to quote specific comments so that people know which poster/comment you’re referring to. NOT to quote the OP!!
