Council refurb...am I expecting too much ?aibu?

I leave in a two bed house which I rent from my local council.
Lived here 10 years and love it.
I decorated 6 months ago then received a letter saying I was getting a new kitchen plus rewire done.
So a month ago works started and it was going to take 10 working days.
So I pack everything away and box it up and protective flooring gets lay.
The first day nobody arrived ...the second day nobody arrived (after having a day by day itinerary ) nobody told me why or informed me they weren't coming.
They left me with holes in the walls with wires on show ,the kitchen hasn't been painted (painters were meant to be here two weeks ago)
The kitchen cupboard shelves have all collapsed as the brackets have snapped (I was told they were a dodgy batch )
Two weeks I have rang the site manager to be told "work will be finished tomorrow " and nobody turns up
Nobody now replies to my messages and the site manager doesn't answer the phone to
Me.
So like I say my kitchen isn't painted or floor put down, holes everywhere (even tho the plasterer has been three weeks ago -he missed these holes )
And now my shelves in the cupboards have collapsed.
Aibu to think this is disgrace?
The protective floor is covered in pieces of wall from the wire and also cement /plaster and god knows what else.
I can't get at any of my stuff as it's all boxed up
I honestly want to cry
If they would tell me when they are coming back to finish the work I wouldn't mind as much also no decorating vouchers that were promised

Its free though at least, wish I could get a new kitchen even with the problems you're having. On a serious note, try calling the site manager off withheld number or a friends phone to see if he or she answers that way. Are you having to take time off work to be home and wait in for them? If so that's really not on if they then don't turn up.

bringitbackks · 23/09/2022 12:51

I've taken two weeks off work.
It's not really free as I pay rent here plus the kitchen is the cheapest they could find (hence the shelves collapsing after two weeks )
I pay more rent here than my friend does mortgage

If you're the person that posted about this a few weeks back when the work started YABU for what seems like an exaggeration on what was in the original post.

If you're not that person then YANBU for expecting people to show up.

Teenyliving · 23/09/2022 12:51

Make an official complaint

bringitbackks · 23/09/2022 12:51

No haven't posted before -well I have but not about this.
It's the mess that's getting to me
The dust etc

It's not free though,is it? Council tenants pay rent and have the right to expect that the landlord provides them with decent accommodation in return

bringitbackks · 23/09/2022 12:52

If they would now give me dates with what jobs are being done on this day I wouldn't mind as much ...it's the silence and ignoring calls etc

That’s pretty poor, I very much doubt it’s a fancy kitchen usually just updated as I know locally they do bathrooms every 10 years then kitchens the same. Sounds incredibly poor quality and messy I’d rather have kept what I had. What if you were at work? I certainly couldn’t just be at home dod this if they kept not turning up

I hope you get some resolution take plenty photos of any damage etc and keep on to them

It's not free though is it? It's provided for through the rent the tenants pay. Councils charge a rent and use the rent to pay for various things and services and the regular replacement of things like kitchens, bathrooms, roofs is factored in and paid for out of their rental income.

No excuse at all for shoddy workmanship and poor customer service. Lodge a formal complain and detail dates and times and condition etc.

Knittedfairies · 23/09/2022 12:54

It's not really 'free' though is it? There will be an element in the rent for repairs/maintenance/refurbishment. I'm not surprised you're fed-up OP, and hope you get sorted soon.

Forget calling the 'site manager'. Call your local councillor, your council office and your housing manager. And your MP.

bringitbackks · 23/09/2022 12:56

Plasterer forgot these holes and random hole left In ceiling

It really isn’t free…

Ignore the jealous posters acting like crabs in a bucket.

Shelter is a housing advisory service, they cover topics such as being left is disrepair. Call them. https://www.shelter.org.uk/

You will probably be advised to contact environmental health, but there may be new policies. Shelter can advise based on which country you’re in (England, Scotland, Wales, NI)

bringitbackks · 23/09/2022 12:59

This has been left like this now for over 2 weeks with nobody coming back to fix it.
I'm really thinking of going to my landlord Monday and maybe it's worth the counsellor like someone suggested

OP posts:
QuietNeighbour · 23/09/2022 12:59

Call the council housing department or your neighbourhood office and complain

andtheweedonkey · 23/09/2022 13:00

Speak to the housing officer this afternoon - those electrics look awful - you need a spark to check them today - don't leave it over the weekend.

OriginalUsername2 · 23/09/2022 13:01

I know what you mean about things not being accessible, it’s really stressful. Trying to cook a meal when all your kitchenware is in random bags in the living room does make you want to scream after a while!

I would call the council directly to tell them what conditions you’re living in and see if they can help move things along.

missbipolar · 23/09/2022 13:02

Why did you need to take 2 weeks off work? Surely they didn't need you there?

andtheweedonkey · 23/09/2022 13:02

Go via your local Councillor too.
Email each person you speak to for written confirmation of the conversation and what they will do and when it will be done.

This!

I live in private rental and would not accept this if my LL did this so don't see why OP should.

It's a disgrace. Half of their builders are cowboys and don't actually know what they're doing half the time!

serenghetti2011 · 23/09/2022 13:04

No point going to your mp I wrote mine a letter/email about being in temporary accommodation for almost 5 years and the affect its having on me and my children, couldn’t care less
literally fobbed right off, housing doesn’t care either.
