I leave in a two bed house which I rent from my local council.
Lived here 10 years and love it.
I decorated 6 months ago then received a letter saying I was getting a new kitchen plus rewire done.
So a month ago works started and it was going to take 10 working days.
So I pack everything away and box it up and protective flooring gets lay.
The first day nobody arrived ...the second day nobody arrived (after having a day by day itinerary ) nobody told me why or informed me they weren't coming.
They left me with holes in the walls with wires on show ,the kitchen hasn't been painted (painters were meant to be here two weeks ago)
The kitchen cupboard shelves have all collapsed as the brackets have snapped (I was told they were a dodgy batch )
Two weeks I have rang the site manager to be told "work will be finished tomorrow " and nobody turns up
Nobody now replies to my messages and the site manager doesn't answer the phone to
Me.
So like I say my kitchen isn't painted or floor put down, holes everywhere (even tho the plasterer has been three weeks ago -he missed these holes )
And now my shelves in the cupboards have collapsed.
Aibu to think this is disgrace?
The protective floor is covered in pieces of wall from the wire and also cement /plaster and god knows what else.
I can't get at any of my stuff as it's all boxed up
I honestly want to cry
If they would tell me when they are coming back to finish the work I wouldn't mind as much also no decorating vouchers that were promised

This has been left like this now for over 2 weeks with nobody coming back to fix it.
I'm really thinking of going to my landlord Monday and maybe it's worth the counsellor like someone suggested

What do you mean thinking of going to your landlord? Why haven't you already done it?

x2boys · 24/09/2022 12:24

I'll say it again but reading these responses I really think people are imagining fully fitted kitchens with appliances etc
Again it's just cupboards a sink and flooring, all my kitchen appliances are my own .

Tumbleweed101 · 24/09/2022 12:27

About 6yrs ago they did a huge refurbishment on my property. Had a wall taken out to make a big kitchen, new heating system, electrics, bathroom and kitchen. Took about a month to complete. They did a great job. I had a choice of kitchen worktops, units, tiles, etc. It still looks very nice now. I have found my HA to have very professional contractors in other works too.
Obviously I had to clean and redecorate after but was worth the upheaval.

I hope you get your property sorted out satisfactorily soon as I wouldn't have found that acceptable either.

Yes it's not on that they keep leaving you in the lurch, especially as you've taken time off work. If you've made it clear to them that you're taking time off work solely for them then I'm sure there's some regulations that says you can claim compensation for being out of pocket (of your days wages which have been wasted).

However you are being unreasonable in your "but its not really free is it?" stance. And other posters have said its not free as you've paid your way with rent. Everyone pays their way somehow. I've paid Nationwide for the past 19 years and they've never fitted me a new kitchen.

Why would Nationwide fit you a free kitchen ?
If you lived in a rented home either private or social and the landlord fitted a new kitchen ,nobody would expect the tenant to pay for it because they don't own the house I'm not sure why people are finding this hard to grasp🤔

You do understand the difference between renting and having a landlord and
Buying your own home, with a mortgage and a mortgage provider don't you?
When you rent you will never own the house ,your landlord owns it and is therefore responsible for all repairs and refurbishment, s ( wether that's a a private or social landlord).
When you buy a house with a mortgage the mortgage provider lends you the money to buy the house and you pay it back over a fixed term with interest ,eventually you will own your house outright ,the mortgage provider is not your landlord though and repairs, refurbishment, s are your responsibility as the owner
I assume you know all this but your nationwide comment makes me wonder .

Do Nationwide also inspect your property every year to make sure you're looking after it and could they just decide to sell your property and tell you you need to find somewhere else to live as they'd like their money back? 🤔

Would Nationwide insist that you have the cheapest kitchen cupboards/flooring/tiles available and as a pp said, inspect it every year to ensure it was not damaged, and it it was, would they threaten you with eviction?

I'm gobsmacked so many people are confusing buying a house and paying a mortgage and OWNING that house, free to do what they like with it.
and renting someone else's house. Either the propaganda has worked too well or there are absolute thickets wandering around.

Blossomtoes · 24/09/2022 15:41

I've paid Nationwide for the past 19 years and they've never fitted me a new kitchen.

Difference is you’ve made a massive profit and there’s an end date to your payments to Nationwide.

BigChesterDraws · 24/09/2022 15:52

I pay more rent here than my friend does mortgage

but your friend doesn’t get a new kitchen or decorating vouchers included with her mortgage payments.

No but the friend will eventually own the house outright and therefor have an asset
A tenant will never have that ,it's swings and roundabouts isn't it?

She does, however, get an asset that she owns outright, worth £££££ more than she paid for it. I know which I’d rather have.

If they would now give me dates with what jobs are being done on this day I wouldn't mind as much ...it's the silence and ignoring calls etc

Contact your ward councillor and also make a formal complaint in writing with the Council.
It's sad that this is required though.

billy1966 · 24/09/2022 16:27

Take lots of photos of the shoddy work in case the company doesn't fix everything.

bringitbackks · 26/09/2022 09:44

Forget calling the 'site manager'. Call your local councillor, your council office and your housing manager. And your MP.

Have a look on your council website. Find out which councillor has the portfolio for housing, and email them. In council terms, that person is like the minister for housing in a government. Also write to the Chief Executive of the housing ALMO (the organisation that manages the council's housing in your area) and the Leader of the council (equivalent to the prime minister).

badgermushrooms · 26/09/2022 13:35

Do what Purple Cow says - email the housing portfolio holder and ask them to look into this urgently, explain the unsafe state your kitchen has been left in and the lack of a return date. CC your ward councillor(s).

There may not be an ALMO and personally I wouldn't include the leader unless I got an unsatisfactory response from the portfolio holder. But definitely do the first bit.

I would add, that if you get no joy from them contact the housing ombudsman.
