To Buy Shein??

GarthElgarsGlasses · 22/09/2022 22:39

Hi, tempted to make some purchases from Shein and wondering whether anyone who’s bought from them would recommend their clothes or not?! Money’s right but really need some new winter clothes, however as Shein is so cheap I’m sceptical! Any experiences of their clothes welcomed! Thanks!

Another one missing the point 🙄

Please explain what you mean then.

Mojitoo · 23/09/2022 12:14

It must be lovely to live in a world where one only purchases locally sourced ethical garments. Or even a delightful smock from vinted which may do for lunch out with the WI or whilst wafting about Waitrose

Oh ffs.

In the real world there is a cost of living crisis, people need cheap clothes for their families and shein provides a perfectly good service

As you know, cheap clothes don't have to come from unethical companies. When you talk about people who waft around Waitrose ignoring the needs of people who MUST buy clothes from Shein, aren't you doing precisely the same thing, ignoring the lives of slaves making your cheap clothes?

Wtf is this narrative that only wealthy people can buy ethically? Heard of second hand shops? Haven't they been servicing the clothing needs of people without much money for decades?

You have a straight choice. Support slavery or not. The excuses on this thread make me sick.

Another one missing the point

Another one here who'd appreciate some clarification on this 'point.'

I agree with other pps that this thread makes for depressing reading.

The hyperbole is unbelievable. The idea that if you don't buy from Shein then your kids go to school barefoot - you do know that people had kids before Shein existed don't you?
I have teenage daughters, one of whom was desperate to order from Shein, mainly because all her friends were. I told her that I wasn't buying anything from them, and explained why. I said if she wanted to use her own birthday money she was welcome but having heard about their business practices she decided against it. I agree that plenty of teenagers (and their parents) don't seem to give a toss (and the ones that I know are not on the breadline by any stretch). It makes me despair tbh.

Well according to @GoingThatWay you’re a bad parent because you’re not buying your kids what they want!

I mean what a shit argument. Surely the way to teach our children (and grandchildren) ethical and moral values is to demonstrate them ourselves. But no, the precious grandchildren have got to have what they want, and sod the poor Chinese children who are enslaved to make it.
(Don’t you think your gc deserve to wear better made clothes than Shein rags?)

Thanks
Why wouldn't they be viable? Are there some people whose ONLY option is to buy from Shein. How can that be true? What did they do before it existed?

@AppleIsMyName have you come up with some reasons why none of my varied options would be viable for someone, or are you sticking with the argument of "fuck off"?

KassandraOfSparta · 23/09/2022 12:36

Shein is just one example of the "stuff" which people feel they are entitled to and deserve, and which is killing the planet. Somewhere like the seasonal aisles at Home Bargains is just as bad, the shelves and shelves of cheap plastic landfill
tat.

Places which facilitate mindless consumption which are all as bad as each other.

Has nobody heard of Second Hand September??

HoneyIShrunkThePizza · 23/09/2022 12:38

I've never used Shein but I've had great luck with vinted. I stick to brands I have worn generally so I know the sizing (and avoid Zara which has all over the place sizing!) My Seasalt rain coat only cost £25 incl postage, for example, and I've just ordered my 2 year old all his winter jammies in a bundle for £6.

DrBlackbird · 23/09/2022 12:41

GoingThatWay · 23/09/2022 11:36

Why didn't she copyright her designs before putting them out there.

Doesn’t work like that. Impossible to police either.

Mingot · 23/09/2022 12:44

@GoingThatWay China don't give a fuck about copywrites

Waroftherosesithink · 23/09/2022 12:47

Personally id not want to buy feom.them from an envoromental point of view.
If i was you ,i would buy better quality from vinted .
Ive got a new exeecise bra with labels on from them, a new top shop coat for £9 quid and a once worn dress for 4 quid. Its fab .

XSnoe · 23/09/2022 12:01

I have never shopped at Shein, but use New Look as my go-to. If I can find what I want on Vinted, great. But if it's a choice between a 2nd-hand dress that will fit me but isn't really a style I feel good in Vs a new New Look dress that is the right colour and a style I love... I will pick NL.

New look is also made in China or Bangladesh they just charge a higher price because of the branding and it's a UK store even the pricer brands are made abroad. I spent £180 on a made in China dress do I believe they are getting hand massages and regular breaks ? No . Most of the high street is stocked from poor countries every item you buy has been made by someone on piss poor wages unless you buy clothes made in the UK or other rich countries. I have a few items made in the UK it's really expensive though. I have looked on eBay , vinted and most of it is shite , vinted have people trying to sell Boohoo for nearly the original price.

peachescariad · 23/09/2022 12:53

Love Shein - bought quite a few items for work. Trousers are very comfy. Bit hit and miss on the quality but I wash them on gentle 30 and they are doing well.
The range is phenomenal and far more exciting and varied than Primark....I get a few comments on how nice a top/dress is when I wear Shein.
Their bikinis are very good and have done several holidays (that's DD not me).

greenteafiend · 23/09/2022 12:56

I know a few people who say things like "I buy Shein because it's the only thing I can afford," but the problem is that they have the mindset of frequently buying (and throwing away) clothes. I doubt I spend more than them overall, but I buy clothes infrequently and i get good quality, classic stuff that doesn't go out of date within a year.

They could do that too. But they're addicted to faddy clothes and the experience of shopping and getting something NEW arriving all the time. If someone has that mindset, then (unless they are very wealthy) they will inevitably be driven towards cheap-as-chips clothes and then talking about how essential it is and how unaffordable anything else is.

British women buy more clothes than anyone else in Europe, apparently. Probably due to faddy shopping and an addiction to cheap, poor quality clothes. I certainly don't think we're particularly stylish or well dressed compared to our neighbors.

Meili04 · 23/09/2022 13:01

The swimwear is the best from shein I've had so many compliments why are other brands missing the mark so much?

workinmums · 23/09/2022 13:27

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/09/2022 12:22

@AppleIsMyName have you come up with some reasons why none of my varied options would be viable for someone, or are you sticking with the argument of "fuck off"?

Lots of reasons like:
maybe they cant afford it and fast fashion may be cheaper
availability and convenience (online shopping/delivery etc)
There may not be enough variety/sizes
It might not be their taste or style
Some people may not want to wear 2nd hand clothing
You act as if most people just buy a shit tonne of fast fashion every 4 business days and throw them in the sewer after a week.

I have clothes for Primark I've had for years which i then end up donating or recycling after, does that mean I'm harming the planet too?

Do you and let other people live their lives as they wish!

I'm out of this thread before I turn bonkers like you.

All very true

also as the poster above - the cheap clothes are bought to wear on holidays. So hardly essential.

I find this depressing reading

medium.com/age-of-awareness/heres-why-you-should-never-shop-at-shein-no-matter-what-8140d285cf4b

Surprised how many on here couldn't care less. Though I guess I shouldn't be.

isitfridayyet22 · 23/09/2022 13:41

As PP have mentioned Vinted is a better choice

wellhelloitsme · 23/09/2022 14:04

I have looked on eBay , vinted and most of it is shite , vinted have people trying to sell Boohoo for nearly the original price.

So discounted and means that yet more garments aren't being made and yet more garments aren't being put in landfill. That's good, not bad, surely?

CakeCrumbs44 · 23/09/2022 14:08

You act as if most people just buy a shit tonne of fast fashion every 4 business days and throw them in the sewer after a week
Do I act like that? I am pretty sure I said "there are lots of other options for clothing which don't involve slave labour" but feel free to wildly extrapolate.
None of those reasons apply to ALL the options I suggested. And the original response was to thing that people need. Choice of styles etc is not a need.

Mojitoo · 23/09/2022 14:12

Do you and let other people live their lives as they wish!

"Do you"? It's not a choosing a fucking sandwich. It's calling out people buying clothes made by slaves.

No. Support slavery = get called on it. Every time.

I'm out of this thread before I turn bonkers like you

Yep. Had enough trying to defend the indefensible.

woodhill · 23/09/2022 14:21

Vinted seems very limited I regards to tailoring your search

The quality...could be because the young girls in the sweatshop who work 18 hour days for practically nothing were a bit tired when they were sewing that particular piece of clothing.

RealBecca · 23/09/2022 14:58

They use child labour. They use sweatshops. They steal work from uk designers which other small businesses have paid for. They ship stuff all around the work and contribute enormously to fast fashion.

I dont know how anyone can buy from them knowing they use child labour in unsafe conditions and look their own child in the eye. I'd rather wear holey clothes go cold.

MiseryWIthAStent · 23/09/2022 15:04

More likely to get better quality stuff from vinted I think.
