To Buy Shein??

Hi, tempted to make some purchases from Shein and wondering whether anyone who’s bought from them would recommend their clothes or not?! Money’s right but really need some new winter clothes, however as Shein is so cheap I’m sceptical! Any experiences of their clothes welcomed! Thanks!

So you’re aware that your clothes may be being made by people imprisoned, sterilised against their will and systematically raped and that doesn’t make you want to dig just a little (even just through a few internet searches) because the clothes last fine and other clothes companies are bad in different ways?
It’s not a great look.

Ebay and Vinted are better options ethically/environmentally and there are real bargains to be had. I’ve just had a quick look on Shein for an idea of price point and honestly you can get quality stuff in the same price range if you have a bit of patience.

They are cheap for a reason. Fast fashion at its very worst. Terrible from an environmental and ethical perspective.

There's always one 🙄
We know, so what!

I’ve read that they use concentration camp inmates to make their products. I tried several times to find a reliable source eitger way and couldn’t, so didn’t order just in case.

It's 2022, not 1942!

Quite shocking

Choopi · 22/09/2022 23:22

Like others have said if money is tight shop second hand. Shein is the worst company out there for fast fashion. The ethics behind the whole thing is dreadful.

Not as shocking, or ridiculous as stating that the clothes are made in concentration camps!!

MarieKlepto · 22/09/2022 23:30

SIL buys a lot for niece. New Look type quality. Less crumpled on arrival than H&M on the hangers in a shop. I'm a vintage (that is: second-hand/charity shop!) person so not really my market. The ethical angle does worry me but is my occasional purchase of a new supermarket/M&S basic any better? It's hard to find out.

Not just one. Thankfully.

You know, and (presumably) still buy from them?

Fast fashion is so bad for the environment for so many reasons - it's your children and theirs who will really bear the brunt of that. Is that really something you feel 'so what' about??

KassandraOfSparta · 22/09/2022 23:42

Cheap, disposable fashion made from plastic in China.

What could possibly be wrong with that? 🙄

Endofmytetherfinally · 22/09/2022 23:47

I really wouldn't. I get that moneys tight but do you actually need new bits and can't get them elsewhere at similar prices. They are pretty much the worst of the worst from an environmental and ethical perspective.

GoingThatWay · 22/09/2022 23:51

@ReviewingTheSituation Yes I do. Only recently I spent a couple of hundred quid with them for some bits for one of my grandkids who loves them.

I really don't believe anyone missed this in news in last years.
But in case you aren't jjst pulling our leg here.
China has concentration camps, well they call it re-education camps, for Muslim minority, especially Uyghurs.

Quackpot · 22/09/2022 23:54

Try looking for their statement of ethics before you order.
You won't find it. They don't have an ethics policy.
Fast fashion is cheap to us, but not to the people who, in some cases, are literally dying in the production process.
There is a website called Good On You that is really good for checking how good a company is. Most are bad. Good ones are expensive, because they pay fair wages, good working conditions, environmental concern etc.
For cheap clothing, buy used. Raid your local charity shops or check out the dozens of online pre-owned sites-ebay, vinted, depop, FB market, gumtree etc.
You'll be surprised.

SouperNoodle · 22/09/2022 23:55

I love Shein!!!!!

stickybear · 22/09/2022 23:55

For a really stark illustration of the environmental impact of fast fashion, watch the section in Simon Reeve's recent South America series on iPlayer where he goes to Chile and visits a landfill site - tons and tons of clothes sent mostly from Europe, some barely worn, literally shovelled into the ground and buried. Really shocking.

On top of the environmental and human rights issues, they blatantly rip off the designs of smaller companies who are actually making clothes thoughtfully and ethically. Over and over again. I’m not a 100% secondhand shopper or anything and I do but some fast fashion, but I wouldn’t buy from them.

Shelaydownunderthetable · 22/09/2022 23:59

*buy

But the shallow and self absorbed don't care. Have to have a new outfit for each night out and each post on the Gram. Can't be seen in the same thing twice. Has to be cheap cheap cheap.

Who cares if it's leaching microplastics into the ocean, who cares if it's made by forced labour or kids in a sweatshop, who cares if it falls to bits in minutes as it's disposable anyway, who cares that textile production is polluting, who cares that all this stuff goes to landfill.

Who cares as long as it's cheap and looks ok for pictures on social media.

How depressing.

It absolutely is better. Shein has released literally hundreds of thousands of new items so far this year. By new items I don't mean pieces of clothing I mean hundred of 1000s of new styles. In April of this year it was over 300,000 vs h&m that had released 4400. It's beyond fast fashion. Returns go pretty much straight to landfill because it is cheapest. They rip of small businesses designs, they sell swastika necklaces. There are no morals at all behind shein.

I don't know eho they are forced to do what for, but maybe a "whatabout that one" isn't necessary here?

Confusion101 · 23/09/2022 00:04

Not everyone who uses these sites is for one use only. I use these as I cannot afford to buy more expensive clothing. Cost of living crisis you know!!?? I sew the seams and hems again if needed, hadn't happened that often to be fair. I've thrown out v little of their clothing over the years. If something comes in a different quality to what I thought I either keep it for cleaning / dirty jobs wear or return it.
Read the reviews carefully of each product before purchasing. It'll give you a good idea of what items will be good or poor. If money is tight, money is tight! And their delivery is speedy at the mo. I was waiting a week max!

Stripperyone · 23/09/2022 00:18

If you're used to wearing designer clothes you'll be disappointed.

If you're used to buying clothes from New Look or Primark, there's no difference.

Yes you're supporting slavery but, if Shien 'goes bust' their workers don't all of a sudden get a decent happy life, they'll be enslaved elsewhere. Slavery needs tackling at its root cause.

I've had some absolutely fantastic swimwear from them and a particular loungewear outfit that I would never take off had I the choice.
