Constant comments on blue eyes

Janedoe95 · 21/09/2022 22:36

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the same thing DC has blue eyes and they’re often the first thing people notice. (Which is fine)

but lately people seem to comment every time they look darker (say if I take a photo at night) people constantly comment on whether they’ll stay blue. Even complete strangers will come up and comment several have warned me they’ll change by 2 years rolls eyes

I have brown eyes and I’m not white so I’m not sure if that makes people more inclined to comment

does anyone else have similar experience? Does this happen to all children or all blue eyed children

I'm white and never heard of this being a thing, so I expect it's because you aren't white.

In my family/friends it's all about if the blonde hair will darken.

I feel like eye colour is something you take absolutely no notice of when you see them every day. Someone made a comment about my little one’s eye colour today and I had to look to see what colour they were as I hadn’t checked recently 😂 I think it must be one of those things people can see to make a comment on so just feel they have to

I have very deep blue eyes and both my DC have them too. I did used to get a lot of comments, usually, "look at those eyes, those will be really dark brown one day." DC are 10 and 13 and still have blue eyes. Nobody seemed to comment past the age of about a year.

Dc has blue eyes which are showing no sign of changing, and blonde hair. It does get commented on because I have dark hair and eues.

I rarely notice or comment on other babies' eyes tbh, but there is a black child I see in the park who has the most incredible, beautiful eyes. They are really pale, and from a distance look almost green/blue with a darker rim. Really striking. Met a woman with yellow eyes once too, which I thought must be tinted contact lenses but where actually the result of two green eyed parents.

Mine were blue as a child, people always commented on them.. By the time I was 10 they had started changing, now they're blue/green (differed a lit) with flecks of hazel

when firms ask eye colour I just write 'other' now.

Ok.

Im olive skinned green eyes, dark hair dad pale skin blue eyes , dark hair but our baby was pale with blue eyes and blonde curly hair 🤷🏼‍♀️ everyone commented on the gorgeous curlies ( from his mum) dropping after a few years. They did sadly but why comment???

I'm guessing its because your skin colour is more associated with dark eyes?

The majority of people I knew growing up had blue eyes and pale skin so we'd have commented on brown eyes as they were rare to see.

Unless its the shade of blue? If piercing blue eyes then somebody will comment regardless of skin colour as they are striking to look at but if they are commenting about whether they will change, then thats unlikely.

I didn't realise people's eye colours changed. Our family through generations were all born with blue eyes and they never changed colour.

I'm mid 40s, white with blue eyes
Nobody ever really comments on them, cant say that's ever really been a thing for me!

Babies don’t have much of a personality so people find it easier to compliment their appearance. Most babies are born with blue eyes and they tend to be brighter the younger they are so they stand out. It’s no big deal.

I am blonde with blue eyes. Both my kids were born with blonde hair and blue eyes. My daughter’s turned a deep chocolate brown and my son’s turned hazel when they were around 6 months old.

I got asked all the time whether I thought they would stay blue. It’s a normal question. I think most babies eyes are blue at birth and most change before they are 2. Blue is significantly less common than brown.

You’re not being asked because of your race, just because it’s what people ask every new mum.

I had this with ds and his eyes eventually turned green but not until he was 9/10.

However I had it much more with Dd who was born with very very very dark brown eyes , almost black, you couldn't see a pupil easily. They got commented ALL THE TIME when she was a baby / toddler.

Meh people just want something to say about babies / kids 🤷🏻‍♀️

I think people comment more if the babies colouring is contrasted with your own.
The most unusual combination I’ve seen is a girl with very fair hair and yellow/gold eyes which got comments from just about everyone.

I have blue eyes that have never changed over the years. I never used to get comments but strangely my brown eyed DC comment on them a lot! And lately othes have started to comment. No idea why.

Is it? I've never been asked, asked or heard anyone asking this question in my life!!!

I've heard, been asked and asked about whether hair colour will change as most babies are born with blonde hair and many change to dark blonde or brown.

Seems a normal comment to me. I always wonder if they will change or stay blue unless they are really light blue.

You might find that people are just trying to compliment your baby - babies’ eyes are big so a very noticeable feature. If your baby’s eyes turn brown, you’ll probably find they’ll suddenly start admiring the beautiful brown eyes.

Actually, this is true too. When my kids eye colours did change, the comments kept coming… “look at her huge chocolate eyes” etc.

I think it probably is because you're not white and you've got brown eyes so people feel it's more of a topic. 'oooh mum with dark skin and dark eyes with blue eyed baby'. I can imagine it gets boring for you.

Dark skin and blue/light coloured eyes looks GORGEOUS. I once represented a client (criminal suspect) at a police station and he was mixed race with the most incredible blue/green eyes 👀 I couldn't concentrate at all on what I was there to do 😂he was too beautiful

I thought all babies were born with blue eyes, then the colour changes…

Have I made that up in my head? 🤪

I think the only time I've commented on a child's eyes was when I met a girl with the brightest amber eyes. So striking and unusual. Had never seen eyes that colour before.

@Imissmoominmama i think it’s true for white babies but not other ethnicities

I think it's most common for white babies. I know because when Dd was born the midwife commented REPEATEDLY how unusual it was for 2 white parents to have a baby with vvv dark brown eyes.

She had ME wondering if I'd accidentally had an affair by the end of her shift.

Yeah, I’ve seen it.

It is a bit weird as blue eyes are common here in Britain (or maybe it’s just my area! Very white admittedly). I see them constantly, a lot more than I see brown eyes, so not something I’d comment on. Although they are certainly sweet on babies and young children, but that may be because I think most babies are cute

I've got green eyes, but as both parents & all of my siblings have blue eyes, people did comment on it a lot when I was a child - probably because they only saw me in the context of my family. Both of my DC look so unlike me it's hilarious. One parent at primary school chatted to me in the playground for years, and only admitted recently that she assumed I was the nanny because you would honestly never think I was related to them!

My mum had the opposite when I was a baby - people used to ask her if my eyes were going to get lighter. My siblings were very fair with big blue eyes and I was born with black hair and eyelashes and very almond-shaped dark eyes. Both my parents are white but when my mum was out with me alone I when I was a baby she was asked more than once by total strangers if I my father was Chinese.

My eyes never did go any more blue; they’re a very murky dark green.
