To think some people need to toughen up with the cold

… and I’m one of them! 😫

anyone else?

I am ALWAYS cold. Even when it’s not cold. The only time I’ve ever felt satisfactory warm was during the heatwave. If it were up to me, the heating in the house would be on all day at maximum- which I think is 30. I would be SO happy with that. But obviously it’s too expensive and also my dog wouldn’t be happy with that, so we keep the heating at a normal temperature for her sake and I layer up. But even then I’m still cold. I could have a hoodie, housecoat, blanket, oodie, electric blanket and a hot water bottle and I would still feel a bit chilly!

for what it’s worth I’m absolutely fine health wise and have no problems, I’m just a massive lightweight to the cold!

I’m cold at work, in the car, in the house, outside, it’s just always so cold! At one point in work I would be in the room on my own and could have the heating at full blast- that was peak happiness and I doubt I’ll ever feel that happy again 😂

Are you very thin? I used to be cold All the time. I am now somewhat overweight and no longer permanently freezing. It's honestly a revelation. I vaguely want to lose weight but the prospect of being constantly cold is very off-putting.

FoxyLoxSox · 21/09/2022 14:51

30?!!!

I feel ill just thinking about that.

I’m overweight but always cold. I think my circulation is crap.

RachelSq · 21/09/2022 14:52

I’m perfectly happy in a cold house when I’m active.

I’m an absolute wimp when I’m sat still all day (I WFH). Unfortunately I find the usual hot water bottle/multiple cosy layers etc. make me much more snoozy than having the house heated properly. Needs must, as our house is terribly insulated and we can’t afford to heat it all day every day.

BlindGirlMcSqueaky · 21/09/2022 14:55

I'm pretty skinny and I get cold all the time. Would love to be Wim Hoff but I just hate it.

I used to work in an office that would crank the AC up to 11 at the slightest sign of the sun. I'd be walking around in gloves, winter coat, HWB, with teeth chattering. It was absolutely ghastly.

Ugh I'm getting chilly just thinking about it!

adagio · 21/09/2022 14:55

I’m definitely warmer as a size 12-14 than I ever was as an 8-10 😂

I also WFH and refuse to put the heating on for at least a few weeks yet. I do occasionally think going for a jog or doing some exercise might warn me up, not actually tried it yet but the thought is there….. In the back of my mind

thecatsthecats · 21/09/2022 14:56

I've started taking a morning walk as well as my afternoon walk, and it did occur to me that part of the energy problem is that lots of us just aren't generating our own heat as we're supposed to.

A small part of tackling rising costs for me will be taking 3x 10 minute walks a day, plus the last one. Keeps me warm for an hour after I did it.

WhileMyGuitarGentlyWeeps · 21/09/2022 14:57

I do agree. Slamming the heating on when the temp drops to 12-13 c and 7 overnight is just daft ... No wonder some people have such outrageous heating bills.

Freezinginfrozen · 21/09/2022 14:58

I suppose im skinnyish but not super skinny or underweight! I’m a size 8-10.

I play sports and train everyday- the exercise definitely heats me up but then I get cold again! And I live in a particularly cold part of the uk which doesn’t help either. My body finally felt happy during the heatwave this summer! It was so nice not to feel chilly

as dramatic at it sounds, even just the thought of 12-13 makes me feel cold to my bones!

Some of you are lucky you don't have Raynaurds.

Arenanewbie · 21/09/2022 15:00

Have you got low blood pressure?

KimberleyClark · 21/09/2022 15:03

Get your thyroid tested. Feeling cold is a symptom of underactive thyroid.

LakieLady · 21/09/2022 15:04

I feel the cold really badly and even with several layers on I feel cold if the thermostat reads less than 21. I've got an underactive thyroid, so I suspect that may be why.

I've got low blood pressure, too, @Arenanewbie , but I didn't realise that had an effect on how cold you feel.

scrufffy · 21/09/2022 15:04

How does one "toughen up"? Genuine question - I've disabilities that mean I'm always always cold and it's miserable

deplorabelle · 21/09/2022 15:05

I am similarly wimpish about the heat and used to shed tears every April at the thought of enduring another summer of heat. I've got much better and a huge part of it is about coping strategies and especially about playing a solid mental game. Find coping strategies and lean heavily on them. I took up gardening so I had an aspect of the summer heat to look forward to (then aggressively made myself do so; it's not a magic bullet but it helps a lot). Maybe you need to take up astronomy or ice sculpture or something???

MintJulia · 21/09/2022 15:05

OP, what do you wear?
Do you have heavy wool sweaters? Thin thermal type vests to go under shirts? Long sleeved winter clothes. A ski jacket and fleece?

I worked with someone who was always cold but she wore the same clothes all year and couldn't see that you need to layer up, wear warmer stuff, thick socks, boots etc in winter. She just expected the office to be heated to summer temperatures and whined all winter when boss wouldn't oblige.

GodspeedJune · 21/09/2022 15:06

I’m with you OP. I’m pregnant at the moment, carrying my own little hot water bottle and pregnancy hormones has made such a difference to my mood. It’s miserable feeling cold all the time!

I get properly chilled to my bones in winter and need either a bath or my electric blanket to warm up.

10HailMarys · 21/09/2022 15:06

Interesting that you mention doing a lot of exercise, because when I was doing a lot of strenuous exercise on a daily basis, I really noticed that I felt the cold A LOT more than I normally would. Weight wasn't a factor in how cold I felt, but the exercise really was. I would be absolutely roasting while working out and then cold the rest of the time.

piegone · 21/09/2022 15:07

I would be interested to know as well. I'm autistic and being too cold (also too hot) is a sensory nightmare that takes away my ability to function as I normally would. So if 'toughening up' would help solve that I would be interest to know how to do it.

SleepingAgent · 21/09/2022 15:07

I'd be getting thyroid retested. Remember U.K. NHS limits for thyroid are insane - if I had my reading in France, Germany, Canada etc I'd be straight on to medication but here apparently I'm "borderline" so fine to struggle on! Hmm

I obviously wasn’t talking about people with disabilities- I was being self deprecating and talking about me, who as I said in my op has no health problems but is just a lightweight to the cold.

I love it. After the horrendous heat, this is bliss. At least when it’s cold you can get warm. When it’s 35 degrees, on the other hand, you can’t cool down. Plus, it’s so suffocatingly crowded around here that summers are a nightmare. The great thing about the cold is that people stay indoors.

That’s interesting actually! I wonder if there’s some link there

I think I would pass out in 30 degree central heating.

My DH will crank the heating up then I turn it back down as it makes me feel ill when I get too hot.

Prefer to have it set at a medium temp so it clicks on and off as needed.
