To think some people need to toughen up with the cold

… and I’m one of them! 😫

anyone else?

I am ALWAYS cold. Even when it’s not cold. The only time I’ve ever felt satisfactory warm was during the heatwave. If it were up to me, the heating in the house would be on all day at maximum- which I think is 30. I would be SO happy with that. But obviously it’s too expensive and also my dog wouldn’t be happy with that, so we keep the heating at a normal temperature for her sake and I layer up. But even then I’m still cold. I could have a hoodie, housecoat, blanket, oodie, electric blanket and a hot water bottle and I would still feel a bit chilly!

for what it’s worth I’m absolutely fine health wise and have no problems, I’m just a massive lightweight to the cold!

I’m cold at work, in the car, in the house, outside, it’s just always so cold! At one point in work I would be in the room on my own and could have the heating at full blast- that was peak happiness and I doubt I’ll ever feel that happy again 😂

I'm a size 8 and definitely feel the cold more than people with an extra layer. I'm the same, warm during exercise or a while after if I've done a long run but I return to feeling cold afterwards. Just pile more layers on, and always have socks on, if I'm outside I always wear a hat too once it hits cold enough to not look weird. I didn't feel the cold during pregnancy it was the one time (3 times) I was actually toasty, there are much easier ways to warm up than that though 😆.

Ps is a house coat a dressing gown for posh people?

Zippedydoo123 · 21/09/2022 16:01

If I feel a bit chilly despite layers being worn I find it helpful to have a cup of soup. Particularly helpful if trying to warm up from having been outside. I mean the ones where u use the kettle. Cheaper than putting the heating on anyway.

Do you warm your core?
Hot drinks
Kidney warmer
Scarf in the neck of your shirt
Wrist warmers
Hat

I wear sheepskin boots (Ugg style) in the house, and my feet are never cold. A hat makes a huge difference, but is less socially acceptable indoors! maybe a scarf of ear muff?

Basically I think we have cold sensors in particular places. Find yours, keep them warm, and it's revolutionary!

Hot food and drinks is often forgotten. My teen is right bottom healthy bmi and always freezing but eats mostly cold food and drinks. Her core doesn’t warm. There’s a reason cottage pie, stew and dumplings, soup etc were popular in the past.

I always feel the cold, even in loads of layers.

Im allergic to wool, cashmere and all hair fibres. As well as polyester (fleece) it’s a nightmare.

Oh no! Even alpaca? That just be very challenging.

RobertsRadio · 21/09/2022 16:05

My perfect temperature is around 20C. 30C would be a killer for me, so I can't imagine how awful you must find most of the year living in the U.K., especially in a colder part of the U.K. It sounds miserable. Maybe you should get your thyroid tested/re-tested especially as a pp has pointed out that NHS has a much lower acceptable level than other European countries (I had no idea of this).

Op, have you considered moving? Would it be a possibility to relocate to a warmer part of the U.K. or even to a different country? It may sound an extreme suggestion, but if I felt the cold to that degree I would be looking at any possibility of moving somewhere hot.

Underroad · 21/09/2022 16:07

I am also always always cold…apart from when I am too hot. There is no in between where I am a comfortable temperature, ever.

Etinoxaurus · 21/09/2022 16:10

Eurgh
This is my nightmare as I'm responsible for the environment at work, and of course aware of the bills. I'm pretty flexible and happy to wrap up, wear boofy boots at work etc.
It was 20 outside today and went into a room with 3 staff two heaters, a fan and all the windows closed 😎🙄😰

ByTheGrace · 21/09/2022 16:11

This is me, so, so sick of it and I've nearly always been this way, I feel ill and fluey when I'm cold. The only time it got better was when I was perimenopausal, but had so many issues that I'm now on HRT and cold once again. In fact I'm cold now, I have socks on, thick lined sweatshirt, long sleeve tee, vest (always a vest!) and thick mens jeans.
I am thinking about an electric gilet this year.
I'm not thin, but not overweight, I was obese a few years ago and still freezing. The only thing I can think of is my ferritin levels are constantly low or the edge of low, I do wonder if there is a connection.

5zeds · 21/09/2022 16:13

What do you wear?

rubydoobydoo · 21/09/2022 16:15

Just popping onto the thread to recommend battery powered heated socks - I have circulation and neurological issues that mean most of me is always cold, especially my extremities (there have only been two days this year so far I've been ok without socks on) - and these heated socks are a complete game changer!

Prayitsok · 21/09/2022 16:21

It's because most people don't move enough during the day now. If you exercise your metabolism stays higher for hours which will generate more internal heat. I'm absolutely boiling when I get home from work because Ive just walked up a hill. Yet most people drive sat in their heated cars. People are sat at their desk not moving most of the day. (And yes I know some people have health problems that means they can't move as much).
Also, we just aren't used to it. Our body adapts to adjust to long periods of cold weather. But we never get that chance because we put the heating on as soon as we feel a chill. People in the past didn't have that luxury.
Finally, we don't dress for the weather anymore. What happened to vests/layers/wearing wool or fur instead of man made fibres.

To be honest, I'm more worried about the heat than the cold. The heatwave was awful this summer and it's much more dangerous to be too hot than too cold.

Eeksteek · 21/09/2022 16:21

How do we ‘toughen up’ then?

Being cold isn’t a princessy weakness of character. When I feel cold, you can touch me and I will feel cold relative to you. I am measurably colder. Despite being in the same temperature room. And despite being well wrapped up. I’m objectively cold. How do I stop that happening?

I posted that I was cold at 17°C (indoors) the other day. It’s not about being uncomfortable. I’m uncomfortable at 18°C, but it’s bearable and manageable with blankets and an unreasonable amount of layers. 17°C in the house while trying to work was utterly miserable. I didn’t think to take my core temperature, but I will next time.

I can understand that people don’t experience cold like I do. I know they really don’t feel the same as me (I’m quite little, so I think I cool down quicker). I was sitting in a room with my cousin, I wearing jeans and a sweatshirt, him in shorts. He jokingly nicked my socks, so I stuck my feet under his leg. The fuss he made was unbelievable, yet we were experiencing the exact same level of cold (and I wasn’t making a fuss!) from my feet, and my feet were in actual fact colder than him. Clearly I’m not the one who needs to toughen up here!!

Why can’t other people realise that not everyone experiences temperature differently, instead of assuming I’m being pathetic and telling me toughen up!

There are variations in sensory experience AND responses to cold vary measurably between people. It is not possible to consciously control your physiological response to cold. Or your core or peripheral body temperature

Pootle40 · 21/09/2022 16:25

Yes I'm always cold. I get Raynauds for about 6 months of the year in the UK. Thankfully I now have a heated steering wheel because otherwise the raynauds was so bad I could feel a couple of my fingers when driving! Our house stays relatively warm but I would be happy if outside it was consistently 23/24c. That would be perfect for me.

Hollyhead · 21/09/2022 16:29

Make sure you wear proper shoes inside - I find wearing trainers indoors really prevents heat loss

Righthandcider · 21/09/2022 16:31

Another vote for exercise here. DH and I work from home and take it in turns to walk the dogs first thing. In winter, whoever did the walk seems to warm up sufficiently to coast through the morning, while the non-walker complains about being freezing.

I also find sheepskin slippers (up to my ankles) make a big difference, as does wearing thin socks under a pair of thick ones. I sometimes sit at my desk with a folded blanket across my lap giving me two or three layers of wool.

That's what I was asking. How do I stop being cold? If you felt my feet now they're freezing. I have thick socks (walking socks) on and my feet are like two blocks of ice. I've a heated throw on my lap. I'm wearing a vest top, long sleeve top, real wool jumper (Celtic and co I think) and a woollen cardigan.

I have sensory issues so I struggle with hats.

I'll deploy fingerless gloves soon and a scarf.

How do I toughen up and make myself less cold? I'd love to!!

HeadNorth · 21/09/2022 16:33

Try the menopause - I have never been toastier! I'm now opening windows and throwing off the duvet after a lifetime of clamping my chilly body to my DH. It seems to be lasting for years as well - silver linings and all that.

idonotmind · 21/09/2022 16:36

How's your diet?

LarchDragon · 21/09/2022 16:37

I'm the opposite. Can't cope with warmth. I like my windows open most of the time.

Flatmountains · 21/09/2022 16:40

I was permanently cold when I lived in a big old stone house. Now I live in a wee modernish flat, I'm good. If I feel cold, I have socks or a robe.

Nameandgamechange123 · 21/09/2022 16:46

Same. I'm about the same size as you and also train every day. I get boiling whilst training but quickly return to freezing. I also have bad circulation and my fingers go very white even if they get only slightly cold.
My problem is that I sweat LOADS. so I'm not only chilly, but damp and chilly. Horrible.
I just loved the heat wave.

Congratulations.

Weird as shit humble brag though

darisdet · 21/09/2022 16:48

Yes. I had the heating on for a couple of hours recently. I won't be doing it again for a while.

I have been trying not to use the new tumble dryer also.

Things that I think would help DD - move a lot more, drink hot drinks regularly, eat hearty food and soup regularly (she eats mostly cold food), put on weight to a bmi 22/23, wear her ski thermals. Wear a proper coat zipped up and hat etc outside so she’s not coming in frozen to bone. She’s a teen and knows best though.
