To think some people need to toughen up with the cold

… and I’m one of them! 😫

anyone else?

I am ALWAYS cold. Even when it’s not cold. The only time I’ve ever felt satisfactory warm was during the heatwave. If it were up to me, the heating in the house would be on all day at maximum- which I think is 30. I would be SO happy with that. But obviously it’s too expensive and also my dog wouldn’t be happy with that, so we keep the heating at a normal temperature for her sake and I layer up. But even then I’m still cold. I could have a hoodie, housecoat, blanket, oodie, electric blanket and a hot water bottle and I would still feel a bit chilly!

for what it’s worth I’m absolutely fine health wise and have no problems, I’m just a massive lightweight to the cold!

I’m cold at work, in the car, in the house, outside, it’s just always so cold! At one point in work I would be in the room on my own and could have the heating at full blast- that was peak happiness and I doubt I’ll ever feel that happy again 😂

It's still warm here down south! Humid at night too..,

When you start going through peri you'll wake up at night wishing for the winter 🤣

I used to be one of those with no body fat constantly freezing too, all changed now I'm 51 love the cold 😬

StripeyDeckchair · 21/09/2022 17:44

I don't want it to be that warm but I have reynauds & an underactive thyroid, I'm cold from September to May.
Once my feet get cold I'm done for, I know the rest of me is fine but can't think or feel anything but my cold feet.

Wear plenty of thin layers, not one or two thick ones, as the heat is trapped between the layers. Shop in outdoor clothing shops for layers designed to keep you warm.
My hot water bottle is already back in use. Great for the feet.
Have a hot shower directly before going to bedd.

I'm also looking at a heated throw - dreamland ones were highly recommended (on a mn thread a couple of weeks ago ? I can't recall)

mumda · 21/09/2022 17:57

Does a cup of tea help? Do you snack?

Some of you are lucky you don't have Raynaurds.

I'm a generally warm person, dislike heatwaves, happy with heating on no more than 16-18C, but also suffer from Raynaurds.

Numbat2022 · 21/09/2022 18:48

I think you probably are unwell in some way and don't realise. It's not normal for humans to be constantly cold.

FoxyLoxSox · 21/09/2022 18:57

I don’t really do hot (Iceland in winter was my favourite holiday destination and I lived in the North Korean border for a while where it could easily be -20 in winter. I hate having the central heating on just for toastiness, it dries me out.

five days after DS was born, I was sitting watching that bbc submarine drama with DH, enjoying a gin and tonic when I suddenly felt so cold I wanted to peel the cushions of the sofa and climb inside it, honestly my bones felt like icicles. I couldn’t finish my gin and tonic (so knew something was really wrong!) I was shouting at DH to put the heating on and he thought I’d lost my mind, it was early September and warm.

I was rushed back into hospital that night with sepsis (thankfully recovered very quickly. But oh that feeling of cold!)

weirdly whenever I’m about to get ill with a cough or a cold now I feel right chilled for a bit beforehand.

so the poster who says maybe you’re ill with something could be into something.

I'm always cold too. And I have to be outside a lot on the farm.

I have Raynauds so as soon as it's even a bit chilly, my hands and feet go white and it's so painful.

If my hands or gloves get wet it's game over!

I was trying to rug my horse last winter and ended up crying as my hands got so cold and sore I couldn't function. Horse got sick of me fumbling about her back legs and kicked me. That was a really shit day.

no way, snap! Being cold with the horses is what inspired my post! The other night I was riding with a thermal vest, a le mieux base layer, a polo shirt, a hoodie, a ride on jacket and gloves and I was still so cold and miserable and it’s only September 😂 I had so many layers I could barely lean forwards and go into jumping position!

sorry you got kicked- that’s bad enough but being freezing on top of it must have been horrific! Hope you recovered quickly!

Isn't it? Because I've been cold for 40 odd years, and have had rafts of tests, and I'm physically fine. Just bloody cold.

Arenanewbie · 22/09/2022 10:11

@LakieLady
I’m usually cold , I don’t need 30 degrees to feel warm but I always wear at least a layer more then other people. Also once I’m cold I struggle to warm up, it’s my main problem.
My sister was told by her GP some time ago that people with low blood pressure tends to have poor circulation and so usually feel cold. I don’t know how true is this tbh but DH has high blood pressure and always warm. My Dad used to have quite low blood pressure for a male of his age and he tends to be cold, especially hands and toes. However saying this my sister is much more tolerate with cold (at least a layer less then me) but used to have low blood pressure as well. The low blood pressure changed with age by the way but the cold feeling not.
I’m peri menopausal going towards menopause probably very soon but still cold. I don’t think I would ever have flushes hot enough to get rid of my cardigan or fleece, no way.

GasPanic · 22/09/2022 10:25

Some people have medical conditions that make them feel the cold.

But with the relative cheapness of energy over the past few years, plus some changes in lifestyle, it's almost like a lot of people have forgotten how to keep themselves warm.

When I was a kid the CH would go on for 2 hours a day, one in the morning and one at night. At night we would have electric blankets for the beds and the lounge fire would be on in the evenings.

Have a think, why do lounges even have fireplaces when the CH can heat the whole house ? The answer is that in previous times energy was relatively expensive. In the evenings you would heat pretty much one room with a fire and everyone would gather in that either to read or watch TV, because it was cheaper than heating the whole house with CH. If I'd stayed in my room and moaned to my Dad that I was cold, he would have told me to come downstairs, rather than power up the CH for the whole house.

We're going to have to get used to heating being more expensive, both because of availability of fuel and because of the impact it has on the planet. We'll get smarter with how we use it pretty rapidly though.

IWishTheBishopWell · 22/09/2022 13:32

DH and I both have raynauds and really feel the cold. I also have fibro and psoriatic arthritis and I'm sure they affect my internal temperature regulation. DH's temp is usually 35.5 degrees and mine is usually 36.3 degrees.

Today I'm wearing 4 layers (vest, warm long sleeve top, cardigan and a hoodie) and slippers and am still cold.

At work we have extra heating now - before we did I would be wearing 6 layers - vest, long sleeved top, dress, jumper, cardigan and hoodie - whilst wrapped in a blanket scarf, wearing finger less gloves and cuddling a hot water bottle and would still feel the chill. I would wear two pairs of tights as well.

Hot food and drinks help but not much. Last winter I wore thick thermal tops but still needed vests and normal tops underneath, plus jumpers and hoodies. I also wore tights and thermal leggings under my jeans and thermal socks and slippers. Every winter I look like the michellin man!

I'm convinced there's something wrong with my thyroid but GP insists my blood results are normal even if the thyroid results are inconsistent. Apparently it's just raynauds.

MarsupiIami · 22/09/2022 14:22

I said I like cold weather but I will add that I do also have pretty bad raynauds. After the first mid winter appointment to check for necrosis (!!) I became extra careful and have more fingerless gloves than any 1 person should own and a heater at work. My feet are always in warm boots even in summer.

But I HATE being too warm! I think I'm just very prepared for winter? 🤔 I'm very fond of winter coats.

bippityboppity87 · 22/09/2022 14:30

My body is crap at regulating temperature. I'm either too cold or too hot (best of both worlds 😣) mainly far too hot though and I hate it. I don't know if it's because I have thick long hair, which obviously doesn't help. I've seriously considered just cutting it all off. But then always have freezing cold hands and feet. Maybe a circulation thing? I have no idea, but it's annoying

TigerRag · 21/09/2022 15:00

Some of you are lucky you don't have Raynaurds.

@Freezinginfrozen It must be so miserable to be that cold all of the time.

I was always taught heat from inside first, so hot drinks!

@TigerRag I have raynauds, it can be so bitterly painful. Especially in the colder months.
