Modern Britain

from today’s Guardian newspaper:

”Nearly 11 million people are now behind on their bills while more than 5 million have gone without food, according to new research that reveals Britons are skipping meals “just to keep the lights on”.

The figures, based on an Opinium survey of 2,000 UK adults in August, found 5.6 million have gone without food in the past three months as a result of the cost of living crisis.

This included skipping meals, eating once a day or not eating at all on some days. Nearly 8 million people had sold a personal or household item to help cover bills.”

Shocking stuff in modern Britain. Inequality and poverty has skyrocketed the past ten years. These stats ought to be the headline and front page on every British newspaper from now until the next election.

I’ve disconnected from headlines across the board left to right. I wouldn’t get rid of The Guardian but it occupies a different position to what it once did - I see it more like any online press grabbing attention just with their agenda instead

The Guardian has always been left of centre, be it on NI/IRA/Miners strikes back in the 70s and 80s or more recently, on poverty etc.

The difference now is the internet and SM.

imo headlines from either the left or the right can still be correct, neither side has a monopoly on accuracy/truth.

No it won't be enough, only when Oliver seeks food and shelter from some posters will they accept what has been happening in the UK for at least 30 years.

Perfect28 · 22/09/2022 13:13

Why do we even care if it's 5million exactly? A single person living in poverty is traumatic and unacceptable.

TooBigForMyBoots · 22/09/2022 13:41

PMSL at the posters who don't understand the science of statistics and will rubbish a report because they don't like the newspaper reporting it. I recognise some names from the thread about the Single Mum On Benefits whose 3yo lost a solid gold dummy.🙄

I don’t recall a dummy thread or headline but yes it applies to both ends of spectrum.

Ask the question about what you’re hearing including is it robust - if it’s a statistic

I think the aim should be to minimise the numbers who are poor but its also true, that however much some people have, they will waste it.

I'd like to see more done on preventative measures/break the cycle, Sure Start was good.

Blossomtoes · 22/09/2022 14:07

Surestart was excellent. Fucking Cameron 😡.

Quite. 2000 is actually a good sample size. It is surprising how many people don't seem to understand how surveys work.

I couldn't find a link to the original survey though to see what methodology they used. Would be interesting to see if anyone knows where to find it.
