Whole families going food shopping

Just came back from food shopping, there were a couple of young families in there, one in particular, the mum was pushing the trolley, her two young children walking near her and the dad was following with a pram and carrying another toddler.

Surely it would be easier for just mum to go and do the food shop, or just dad? Why bring all those children plus pram? I can't think of anything worse. Both mum and dad looked stressed.

Lately in the supermarket I find the worst issue is women shopping with a useless husband tagging along getting in the way.

Generally, late middle-aged couples joined at the hip are a pain in the proverbial, whether blocking aisles in supermarkets or pavements outside Grin

My friend goes shopping with her husband and children (5 of them) as he can drive she can't and they on a tight budget so she meal plans ..there no other way they can do it and no they can't have shopping delivered as they use budget shops. I can think of lots of reasons why whole families go out ..maybe coming back from day out, shopping is the day out,

I might be missing something but can't he just go alone?

woodhill · 14/01/2023 17:46

He probably wouldn't get everything and perhaps she likes to have a look at the food if she is meal planning itms

DH shops but he doesn't always get the extras

Murdoch1949 · 14/01/2023 17:47

Maybe it's the only trip out together the family get.

He could just wait in the car with the kids and some books etc. Not saying he should have to, kids in supermarkets don't bother me much (other people way more!!) just if it's stressful for them all having to go in

Just got back from my weekly shop - a group of 6 Chinese students shopping en masse. First found them standing in a row around the fish shelves (so no room for anyone else), then found them in the same row in front of the onions and garlic. Finally found them standing in a row blocking both the spices and the stock cubes. At that point I gave up, said "excuse me" very loudly and went in front of them to get what I wanted off the shelf. Grrr

Ladysodor · 14/01/2023 18:36

How do you know she wasn’t a childminder? How do you know it was her husband? How do you know it wasn’t someone helping someone with a lift? How do you know any of this just by looking?
Tbh I’d say it was probably none of your business.

Jedsnewstar · 14/01/2023 18:38

Absolutely none of your business op. The world doesn’t revolve around what mildly annoys you.

😂the number of people on here who seemingly live their lives in endless distress and fury over the smallest things

LeFeu · 14/01/2023 18:51

I don’t care what other families do, more power to them, but I fucking hate supermarket shopping at the best of times, so bringing my kids along to make it take longer is generally not something I do unless it is absolutely necessary!!!

Does seem really odd but I guess people have their reasons!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 14/01/2023 18:59

It does always make me suspect controlling or useless husband but I imagine that’s unfair of me.

Ineke · 15/01/2023 00:18

As a child I can remember going shopping in the COOP with my Mum. I remember things like the bacon and cheese counter vividly. I didn’t find it boring at all and enjoyed the outing, I sat on the back of her bike. So, maybe it’s an outing for these families who bring their children, however, the nightmare scenario of terrible two’s tantrums would make me think twice, but may be a good lesson in correct behaviour, although I wouldn’t want to go through that again!

XenoBitch · 15/01/2023 00:20

As a kid, all 3 of us went shopping with mum. More hands to carry the bags home.

The audacity! How dare they shop en masse! In a foreign country, no less!

🙄

Indeed, how very dare they? Wonder whether UK youngsters in the supermarket would bother this poster quite so much.

id just be impressed that young people were buying fish 😁

Frankola · 15/01/2023 11:32

I sometimes take my 6 year old because she can be a picky eater at times so it prevents arguments at home when it comes to tea time and I can smugly say to her "well you picked this out at the supermarket" 🤣

Why not suspect controlling wife?
