Whole families going food shopping

Shiningstarr · 18/09/2022 15:01

Just came back from food shopping, there were a couple of young families in there, one in particular, the mum was pushing the trolley, her two young children walking near her and the dad was following with a pram and carrying another toddler.

Surely it would be easier for just mum to go and do the food shop, or just dad? Why bring all those children plus pram? I can't think of anything worse. Both mum and dad looked stressed.

not my personal preferred choice but maybe they want to teach their kids life skills
maybe there’s a history for abuse and control maybe it’s freedom of choice ffs

Ginganinjanoodle · 20/09/2022 14:52

I work in a supermarket and it’s drives me potty! 😂

Obviously, they don’t go to work with me -or didn’t. But I would expect them to help with all chores where it was safe and reasonable for them to do so, at least for a while. As I said, two hours at the supermarket becomes only one when both parents help. It’s quicker and easier. But we wouldn’t spend anything like even one hour doing the shop.

But it doesn’t become one hour for many families - I’ve seen these families in action and it’s like a trip out for them. It’s both parents trailing around together the whole with bored kids who are (understandably) acting up - not one parent nipping off for half the list up speed up the process.

Horses for courses and all that, though - but it’s an odd way to spend a Saturday afternoon (imo obvs).

Gemmanorthdevon · 20/09/2022 15:59

My husband and I both work full time. We spend 5 days a week passing the baton, and hardly lay eyes on each other.. If its humanly possibly, we do everything together at the weekend - including the food shop. Because aswell as being quite fond of each other, he likes to help with the heavier stuff and I like to see what I'm buying!

Online shops are not cheap when you factor in availability, minimum spends and delivery costs, unsuitable substitutes you havnt got time to sort out and freshness ( or lack of ) of fruit and veg...I've even noticed that a lot of the cheaper items are routinely unavailable to buy online.

The world would be such a nicer place if people just concentrated on themselves and not others. 🤦‍♀️

Mind your own business

Affyhuss · 20/09/2022 16:41

Very very well said I wish there were more people like you. The person who started this cause friction in societies where people start to question thier self worth

Affyhuss · 20/09/2022 16:43

You are one judgemental human being. Get a life

It's the mini trolleys with toddlers weaving in and out that give me the rage I hate having to negotiate around them

What is a mini trolley? I have never seen anything like this. Are they provided by the shop? What are they for?

Cameleongirl · 20/09/2022 18:41

@WildfellAnne Some supermarkets provide tiny trollies for children to push so they can help with/enjoy shopping. Toddlers love them, but they don't tend to move in a straight line and often catch people's legs!

mg2397 · 20/09/2022 18:52

We have to shop as a family of 4 as we can't drive so have to carry it home which often requires plenty of hands and bags hooked on the pram. It's not easy, is definitely stressful but at this point is necessary. Hoping it won't last forever but it takes a while to learn to drive!

As for delivery there are rarely spots in our area for when we aren't working, and obviously can't do click and collect because we don't have a car. I also personally struggle to think the 2 weeks ahead to meal plan to suit everyone's needs. It just takes brain power that I don't have 😂

SuSen · 20/09/2022 19:00

I can tell you right now, if I'm forced to do the food shop which I detest then my partner and children can endure it too.

Dinomummy2 · 20/09/2022 19:01

Supermarkets are the cheapest place to buy children's clothes and shoes.

Children often need to try on said clothes and shoes for fit.

Therefore we take our child to the supermarket.

The lack of tolerance for children in our society is atrocious. There are very few free and safe indoor venues where you can take a child these days.

Hugasauras · 20/09/2022 19:06

Love a family mooch around George and the homewares bit!

Wow, thanks for explaining. They definitely don’t have them at any supermarket I use -and I go to a few.

Mumofsons87 · 20/09/2022 19:16

I bring my two children ( not their dad, though that surpasses my limit) to the food shop maybe every second week. I think it's important for them to see daily life I action and learn how to behave, they are almost 2 and 5. The first couple of times after the pandemic were mayhem though and I swore never again, but they have improved massively. They eat snacks almost the entire time though 😂 it has lots of benefits with getting them involved with weekly meal planning and preparation. And they love it. But I would feel very awkward with OH there too. Unless we are knocking around a shopping centre and he happens to join me in the supermarket half way through but even then he just puts me off!

This.

This thread is just ridiculous.

Kids are a part of life, and maybe, just maybe, if parents included them more, and other people stopped judging them quite so much, the kids would become adapted and contribute to the running of households. It worked for us.

After trudging through these replies I'm almost more inclined to bring my whole family grocery shopping with me in future just to piss off the self entitled twats that believe the only way to do things is their way, get over yourself 🙄 I don't owe it to you to go alone, or to swiftly get in and out or not take up space, or even an explanation as to why we are all there together....my money is as good as yours and as a 5 person family lord knows I'll spend quite a large chunk of it every week on groceries so I'll take my time if I want to, I'll let the kids have a browse and try convince me to buy some extras while their at it, ill let them take turns pushing the trolly or fetching the butter, giving zero fucks if some miserable old Betty behind me is thinking that my family are an inconvenience to her, if you don't like it you can shop online 🤷‍♀️ The problem is with you not the family shopping, so why should they stay home ? Why do you think your entitled to be at the supermarket but not 4 year old Billy with his mum & dad? .... the same people complaining are likely to complain about kids being at restaurants/cafes or literally anywhere else in public, someone said they feel sorry for previous posters kids if a trip to the supermarket is considered a day out, well I feel sorry for your kids if their only allowed in public at kids soft plays or playgrounds & are otherwise hidden away from society until when? Their adults? Ridiculous 🙄... Seen someone suggest days out should be to museums not supermarkets, such a joke cause I guarantee there'd be a mn snob post complaining their day at the museum was "ruined" because some family had the audacity to take their kids out in public ffs... here's the thing kids /families exist & they are as entitled to be out in public all together, participating in communities, to be seen & heard as much as anyone else

Well said!!!

Twos0ups · 20/09/2022 20:25

Jesus, I forgot about the horror of the kiddie trolleys.
Thank god most places have got rid of them now!!
Little Johnny unable to master walking in a straight line, running the fucker in to everything that moves, while the parents smile beatifically.

withaspongeandarustyspanner · 20/09/2022 20:39

Imagine having a DH who helps you shop? I had to take all four of mine shopping by myself.

DH is now EX-DH.

Maybe they can't afford to do much else out of house together.
Maybe they don't get much time together.
Maybe they like it.

Maybe it's none of our business!

YES

LikeAStar1994 · 20/09/2022 21:20

Whatever happened to just getting on with your own life?

I certainly couldn't give a shit if whole families are there. In fact, I barely NOTICE. Too busy getting my own stuff to even care.

Some people on here really are a few brain cells short.

Somethingneedstochange · 20/09/2022 22:05

Could be any number of reasons kids might be picky eaters. More willing to try foods they have chosen themselves. Also they might be wanting to see what toy's will hold they're interest for birthday coming up and Christmas. There's been time's when I have been shopping alone and thought oh I wish I had S or J with me to see if he/she would like this. Both special needs so I liked to try before I buy.

mini1275 · 21/09/2022 08:51

Where I live in a holiday town, the worsts time to go shopping is about change over time, the only large supermarket is crammed with holiday makers all shopping in large groups chatting and planning their holidays, surely there’s a better place to do it

MariC · 21/09/2022 08:55

YABU there are many reasons for this, which I don't feel a need to list and frankly it's up to the individual family how they shop.
