She's the eldest child. The law has changed now.
Even Zara Philips is behind her little brother in line to the throne. Wtf.

I assume the reason why males inherited the Crown in preference to females was that they were expected to lead their armies into battle.

George II was the last British king to actually engage in battle with his troops in 1743.

That plus males were not so liable to being controlled.

One of the reasons Elizabeth I didn't marry despite her government begging her to for years was she didn't want to be controlled by her husband or have her crown usurped.

In the past it made complete sense for the security of a country to have a male ruler. In fact the majority of European monarchies adopted Salic Law which meant a woman was completely barred from ruling as sovereign under any circumstances to safeguard the country.

bellabasset · 18/09/2022 08:41

Many people would have welcomed Anne as Queen. Had Charles abdicated before he married Andrew would have been next in line.

Not 100% true if Harry and all his children did for some reason not take the crown. then it goes to Andrew then his daughters. then Edward and his 2 children THEN Anne.. So it is not the "next" of the queen's children after Charles' issue.

After George's birth due to the change, it will be the "next" so when George becomes king if he has no children then Charlotte will be next in line.
obviously, as soon as the heir has children it pushes down the line.

When Elizabeth went to the throne her sister was 2nd to inherit now her son is 24th in line to the throne,

Actually she wasn't, Charles and Anne had already been born when The Queen became Queen so Margaret would have been after them.

YABVVVVVVVVVVVVVVU for using "I was today years old", regardless of anything else

ParentallyUnprepared · 18/09/2022 08:46

I know this thread is nonsense but I think Anne would be brilliant as Queen.

Iabu.
I was looking at lady Louise being below her younger brother. Surely that should be changed.
It's Sunday and early sorry

It has been changed. It was changed when Kate was pregnant so that the first child of whatever sex takes priority.

This is all very easily google-able. And the Wessex children are never going to have a claim to the throne, so totally academic.

TroysMammy · 18/09/2022 08:51

I wouldn't be surprised if the Wales' youngest was named Louis because hopefully we'll never have a King Louis (the King of the Swingers, the jungle VIP) on the throne. 😃

Lady Louise is still behind her younger brother so no that hasn't been changed

I honestly didn’t think it was ever a rule. I’ve never had much interest in the royal family but as we had queen Victoria and obviously queen Elizabeth I just assumed the crown went to the oldest child no matter what sex they were.

I was only corrected recently, too. Having always known a queen and a queen mother, and there being notable queens in history (which I have never studied in any depth) it didn’t occur to me, until it was recently pointed out that had something happened to Charles in childhood, we would now have Andrew, and there is nothing anyone could do about it.

I adore Anne and think she’d be excellent, and despite being mildly anti-monarchy as a system I rather like the Royals we have. Clearly, we have to have to some sort of head of department, and looking at the current lot, I would actually rather have most of the current Royal Family, than the bloody cabinet! Ironic, given that we choose the cabinet and inherit the RF. They do seem to appreciate their privilege and show more empathy as a rule.

Shame we can’t argue that Charles was divorced, married a Catholic divorcee, and make Anne Queen anyway. She’d be awesome!

Anne has divorced too!

I like Anne, but don't see how she's any more deserving than Charles. The idea that Charles has committed offences which should prevent him being King is weird. Look at the Kings of the past- some of their morals were truly despicable, whereas Charles seems like a man with his heart in the right place.

Do people still say ‘today years old’? I knew a few people were trying to make this happen a couple of years back but it didn’t catch on.

They do. You'll see it on Twitter, too.

Denny53 · 18/09/2022 09:03

Fancy opening a thread and getting the information totally wrong!

The queen mother didn't inherit the throne. She was in the same position as Camilla (married to the king), rather than being heir herself.

Hardly matters by the time you get to Louise, does it?

You'd need a repeat of the St Bartholomew's Day Massacre for her or her brother to get within sniffing distance of the throne.

RaRaRaspoutine · 18/09/2022 09:11

I would LOVE Queen Anne. She’d be brilliant I think.

RubbishRobotFromTheDawnOfTime · 18/09/2022 09:13

I’m a bit surprised at people not knowing males inherit over their older sisters. It’s not just the royals, it’s all hereditary titles. In a landed family, the oldest son (or closest male relative if no sons) inherits the title. It’s the whole basis of the first series of Downton Abbey!

LakieLady · 18/09/2022 09:16

EbbyEbs · 18/09/2022 07:57

As an aside, Anne would make a brilliant queen. I’m not sure she’d actually want it however.

I agree. She's the best of the lot, never puts a foot wrong or does anything embarrassing.

Unless you count the time she fell off in an equestrian competition and you didn't need to be a lip reader to see she said "Fuck!". But I think that's perfectly reasonable especially as, iirc, it was a water jump and she ended up in the water*.

And she appears to live a relatively modest life by royal standards. I was quite pleased when I saw some pictures of her at home, and her house looks like a fairly normal middle-class granny's house.

*Disclaimer: it was a long time ago and I may be conflating two different events

correct I should not have written when she went to the throne. I am still in another thread in my head where we were discussing where Philip was on the line to inherit :)

SoupDragon · 18/09/2022 09:18

Tane and Senna Lewis (born 2012 and 2010) were the first to be affected as their order in the line of succession switched when the Act came into force. They are way down at around 36th in line now though.

If she had been heir though her life would have been completely different. She may well have been forced into being a different person. With 3 brothers she would never have been expected to inherit the throne.

Enko · 18/09/2022 09:22

Personally, I would care for Anne as queen. I don't get the love for her here on MN.

With a 2022 view, it seems sensible to say that Anne should be after Lilibet but I also get that with 1950 eyes when Anne was born this was not the "lie of the land"

Personally, I think it should have been changed when Diana was expecting William but obviously, that would not have made any difference as Diana and Charles had only boys.

DrDetriment · 18/09/2022 09:22

The number of people who get their understanding of history and the monarchy from The Crown is very worrying. It's entertainment, not a documentary.

Yugi · 18/09/2022 09:24

There is a Youtube channel called UsefulCharts which talks through various family trees and how titles etc work. He has just upated his British royal family tree if you want to see it set out step by step. The original video goes to about number 50 in the line of succession.

J0y · 18/09/2022 09:29

Anniegetyourgun · 18/09/2022 08:08

Doesn't anyone consider that Anne has been able to grow up the way she has because she was NOT expected to become Monarch? Conversely it would probably have done Charles's character the world of good had he been further down the queue. If we're going to carry on with wild speculation, if Andrew had been first in line he might have been forced to become, well, maybe not a fabulous human being, but a better one in some respects at least. And Edward if he were the heir would never have been allowed to organise It's a Knockout.

Never watched The Crown but my mother told me all the succession stuff, like the difference between an Heir Apparent and an Heir Presumptive (if I'm remembering it right, "apparently" Charles would be the next King, but if we "presume" this or that happened it would go to Andrew then Edward etc). On a side note, my mother watched the Queen's coronation on a tiny purple-and-white television that belonged to her uncle. How times change! Now we don't have television so we just have to go there in person. Apparently.

So true, they've all been shaped by the expectations, restrictions and relative freedom that they had.
