(Lighthearted)

It gives me anxiety - instant heart rate spike and all - when I write someone a message, or even a few short messages and they come online and read them instantly and start to reply. Because I don't like the idea of getting caught up messaging back and forth 'in real time' iykwim. Or heaven forbid that they try to call me whilst I am messaging them and they can see my status as online.

I know, I know, I am a bit silly and need to be more comfortable just going offline and setting boundaries 😂.

Can anyone relate to this, though?

I'm like this and have adhd, try an online quiz to see if you have any other traits.

EmmaH2022 · 16/09/2022 21:47

I don’t have status visibility on WhatsApp. Or notifications. Even if I did, people must know that others are busy and can’t reply straight away.

I sometimes get into text chats. Other times there’s no time. Only person who didn’t realise that, I used to text before getting on the Tube 😂

Poetnojo · 16/09/2022 21:53

So, you text someone and they see it right away and reply, and you're asking if that's an aggressive act? Not even remotely!

Do what my mum does write 'stop texting me now'. Seems to work for her

you can solve your problems, by turning off your status, this means people can't see if you are online ir when you were last online, it also means you can't see if the are online either. So you could send your message and not ever see the other person is typing, so just put your phone down and answer when you want too.

Unfortunately that is not how it works @OhAmBackAgain you can switch off your 'last seen' status, but not your 'online' status there is no way to hide that as of yet.

I suspected that it might be that but the results of the online quizzes I have taken seem a bit unclear / not conclusive.

You cannot turn off the online setting - so people can always see when you are online. You can only turn off the 'last seen' status.

Haha yes - texting before getting on the tube is a good idea - although now some stations have internet access! We are doomed.

Not literally an aggressive act (hence the 'lighthearted' comment at the start of my post) its just that it can feel remarkably intense (to me) at times to have someone come online and have them start instantly replying when you have not even finished responding to them yet. Its overwhelming.

Thank you @Pebbledashery 😂 - clearly not all that pointless if there are others on here that agree, and it seems that there are at least some others that do.

Guess im just an ignorant, I just message people back whenever I feel like, regardless of how quick they message me back. Cba to fret about etiquette.

Ohsugarhoneyicetea · 16/09/2022 22:16

Write your message in flight mode, then flick it back on to send & close. That deals with the 'online' business.

beenwhereyouare · 16/09/2022 22:23

You can't schedule Whatsapp messages through the app, but you can install a WhatsApp message scheduler from a third party. I'm in the States, so I don't know what apps to use, but you can Google it.

Yes - I do this. Its the only way I know how to manage the anxiety of the situation. Unfortunately I still have one friend who always manages to come online and read the message the second its delivered to her WhatsApp inbox so I haven't been able to hot foot it off line in time and she's already bloody THERE.

I'm the same OP. I feel under pressure when someone starts replying! When I see 'So-and-so is typing ...' I start to panic. My cousin sends these little scattergun texts. So she'll ask me something and I start to reply, then she'll keep adding more questions/information while I'm still on the third word😂 Maybe I'm slow of brain and hand!

wellhelloitsme · 16/09/2022 22:45

Worse is when they're messaging you back and forth, can you see you online and then RING YOU! So you can't hide 😭
