For shouting at a woman who was nudging a spider with her foot?

So I was in the mall, there was suddenly a commotion, people acting a bit elevated, enough for me to try to see what was going on.

I started walking over to a group of people, acting scared and some squealing. When I realised they were watching a woman from the group nudging and pushing a large Giant House Spider with her trainers on.

When I realised this, knowing how delicate their legs are, I loudly said "No! No, no ,no!" But she didn't hear and continued, so I started forwards and again loudly saying "no no no no!"

I scooped the spider up in my hands and put it in a nearby plant pot full of bamboo.

Looking back at where the group were, the woman was looking at me angrily, saying "I was just checking if it was alive, I wasn't gonna hurt it" pretty sure she swore about me.

Anyway I've been feeling rubbish about it and wanted an outsider's perspective.

See you in hell @Mookie81 😂 🦶 🕷

Happily! 😂
And as for the person who said they'd punch someone, I'd love to see them try.

Dalaidramailama · 17/09/2022 22:31

@Mookie81

I know can you imagine how even more ridiculous this made up scenario would be if someone lamped someone at the end for stepping on a spider 😂 🕷.

JackiePlace · 21/04/2023 11:53

Thank you for saving the spider. I don't know why this cruel and irrational hatred of spiders is allowed to perpetuate on Mumsnet.
If everything that was deemed "ugly" was persecuted in the way spiders are, many of us wouldn't stand a chance!

Theprincessisblanketed · 21/04/2023 12:07

I like spiders and would try to rescue a spider but of course you're massively unreasonable for shouting at another person for nudging a spider with their foot.

Next time you make a minor mistake OP would you like some angry asshole shouting at you about it and think they were justified? No you wouldn't. So don't do it yourself.

SidekickSylvia · 21/04/2023 12:11

I don't mind spiders and if I see one at home I completely ignore it and will have forgotten about it within seconds. It must be awful to have a phobia though, I sympathise with anyone who does as it's not something you can avoid.

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️🕷️

IamSuperTired · 21/04/2023 12:14

Where are all these spider lovers coming from!! ??? You're all mad! The buggers don't survive long in my house (except the rare occasion when maybe a little of 'Charlottes web' comes back to me and resist the urge to stamp! 🕷️🐾

Was he called George?

Yep - the world is a duller place without Joyce Grenfell!

foxlover47 · 21/04/2023 12:27

Think you were exactly right saving the spider :)

Blondewithredlips · 21/04/2023 12:32

You did the right thing OP. You sound very kind.

Viviennemary · 21/04/2023 12:34

I hate them terrifying things. She should have squashed it. Not let it go free to frighten somebody else. It could cause a person to have a heart attack if they are terrified of spiders and have a phobia.

Bananaduck · 21/04/2023 12:39

Such a hero 😄

CoffeeCantata · 21/04/2023 13:49

Totally with you, OP.

This is just one of the reasons why I hate 'I'm a Celebrity' (though there are many). It seems it's OK to be cruel and torture animals as long they're very small. Or - it's OK to kill/torture if you personally consider the creature to be ugly or horrible.

I've just come to the conclusion that people are thick - if it was an Australian spider, maybe there's a justification for this kind of thing but spiders in the UK are very rarely a problem.

FrodisCapering · 21/04/2023 15:11

Some of the replies on here sound crazy. Boasting and laughing about hurting an innocent creature? Absolutely sick.

You did the right thing, OP.

I am absolutely terrified of house spiders, to the point where I scan rooms. There is no way I would hurt one though. I wish I could have you "on-call" in spider season 😂

Dalaidramailama · 16/09/2022 20:15

I’d have been inclined to stamp on it as hard as I could just for fun to see your reaction

Seriously? You arsehole

AllIeveknewonlyou · 22/04/2023 00:22

This is an old thread!

But I admire OP bravery, I'm terrified of them.

You sound unhinged I would have thought you were crazy making all that commotion and sticking your nose in because someone else was trying to shove a spider out the way or kill it, GASP. Are you always this dramatic?

Given your later posts, I would say it's you that sounds unhinged.

Yet another thread proving how different the MN world is. Lots of totally normal well adjusted people are swatting flies, splatting spiders and even putting down slug pellets or rat poison and the world carries on just fine. Meanwhile here it’s Save the Spiders week.

Is it OK to kill animals if a) they're very small and b) you don't like them?

What if someone hit a cat or a squirrel with a mallet? Is that OK?

I would suggest that the 'normal, well-adjusted people' you speak of are insensitive and unimaginative. They haven't ever questioned or thought about this behaviour.

Sometimes you may have to kill a creature, but if you have any sensitivity, empathy or imagination it's a matter for regret.
