For shouting at a woman who was nudging a spider with her foot?

So I was in the mall, there was suddenly a commotion, people acting a bit elevated, enough for me to try to see what was going on.

I started walking over to a group of people, acting scared and some squealing. When I realised they were watching a woman from the group nudging and pushing a large Giant House Spider with her trainers on.

When I realised this, knowing how delicate their legs are, I loudly said "No! No, no ,no!" But she didn't hear and continued, so I started forwards and again loudly saying "no no no no!"

I scooped the spider up in my hands and put it in a nearby plant pot full of bamboo.

Looking back at where the group were, the woman was looking at me angrily, saying "I was just checking if it was alive, I wasn't gonna hurt it" pretty sure she swore about me.

Anyway I've been feeling rubbish about it and wanted an outsider's perspective.

I wouldn’t have even been brave enough to shove it with my shoe, let alone pick it up. But then again I’ve been bitten by a house spider and false widows. It’s nice of you for being kind, but at least she didn’t just stamp it out. I try not to kill them and live quite happily in harmony with my cellar spiders and harvestmen, but house spiders and false widows I really struggle with. And I’m unfortunately surrounded.

I properly LOL’d at the ‘various methods to be honest.’

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

You actually laughed out loud at this 🙄You need to get out more! Suprised you didnt snort your tea out your nose!

I don't like spiders but I can remove them from my house. Very little drama. No mini murder scene or heroic rescue needed. Just glass, card, pop them out the door.

Dalaidramailama · 16/09/2022 20:15

I’d have been inclined to stamp on it as hard as I could just for fun to see your reaction

THIS!

The preachy Spider Lovers are always the ones with spider free homes.

My new house is in a dire state of repair with holes and gaps in windows, skirting boards, walls and doors. I could "chase and relocate" spiders as a full time job here. As it stands, I swiftly dispose of (kill) about five of them a day.
I can't even imagine what it would look like in here would I just ignore them and let them thrive!

I dread to imagine what you'd do watching someone pouring boiling water on the ants

CoatyWonder · 17/09/2022 01:43

MN is such a weirdly aggressive place sometimes. OP, I actually do think you're a bit of a hero. You were right to call that woman off and save the spider, I'm glad you did. Well done for facing up to your phobia

What a bizarre conclusion to leap to..

I can count six spiders from where I am sat at my desk, I can tell you what species four of them are, and what two of them ate in the last 36 hours.

I like spiders, I'm not overly keen if they startle me because I am not particularly keen on being startled, but I absolutely do not have a spider free home.

Btw certainly this time of year, the more you disturb and evict and kill spiders, the more you'll see. I could tell you why but, meh, I can't be bothered.

There are some incredibly immature and infantile attitudes on this thread - imagine ridiculing someone who has made a decision to deal with a phobia? It is quite clear the OP decided to deal with her phobia and took the time to do that, not that she decided to immediately be over it and then all was fine and she was the spiders best friend, tra la la, happy ever after.

I find people who kill spiders quite scary

Abhannmor · 17/09/2022 02:01

You did the right thing. Lot of arachnaphobes on this thread lol !

WomanStanleyWoman2 · 17/09/2022 02:04

Utterly ridiculous. Get a grip.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/09/2022 02:08

I am really not bothered by those who are genuinely scared who panic and stamp or lob a book at it - I'd rather they had their fears allayed as it could cause horrible accidents, but all animals can react badly out of fear, we're no different.

I also have no problem with people removing harmful pests that do damage, contaminate food, spread disease - however UK spiders fall into none of those categories and so I leave the ones in my home alone, I find them fascinating.

I have a HUGE issue with those who want to kill them because they can, as a thought out, planned course of action; because they know it will upset someone else; for fun; because they want to belong to a particular group of people who like to scream BURN THE HOUSE DOWN KILL IT WITH FIRE, and join in the the hysteria...

I don't understand people like that, nor as I say, the intensely immature, almost defensively offensive reaction they have to those of us who do like spiders.

You don't have to like them. You don't need to touch them or talk to them or give them drinks on cotton buds or rescue them from the cat even - just leave them alone?

Theres something deeply wrong with people who have to go out of their way to be a nasty fucker to a harmless creature many times smaller than themselves, and those who will enjoy it, or enjoy the upset it causes others by doing it or telling them they do it.. well thats verging on the psychopathic quite frankly.

Ilikepuffins · 17/09/2022 02:19

I’m scared of them but let them be. I couldn’t kill one.

I actually Agree with you.
I’m in London and there is a spider web in my garden with a pretty big spider 🕷 in the middle of it and it doesn’t bother me or my 12 year old daughter. She always checks on it (her ) before school and when she comes home.
My daughter thinks it’s a mama spider waiting to give birth 😊.

I don’t know anything about spiders but the spider looks pretty big.
Depending on how long this thread goes on for I will try and take a photo tomorrow in daylight hours.

WiddlinDiddlin · 17/09/2022 02:51

Thats likely a garden spider Araneus diadematus, if it is, your daughter is correct really, they lay their eggs in autumn and then the females die, but right now they will be at their biggest and most obvious, often sat in the centre of their webs.

I always like to see pics of them, they have a wide range of colours, from dark blacks and charcoal shades through browns and really vivid oranges to a dark reddish colour. V pretty spider (in my opinion!)

WiddlinDiddlin · 16/09/2022 20:36

I have done the same OP.

I don't understand why some people need to demonstrate their utter cuntishness by declaring that they'd stamp on a spider on purpose to upset you. Does it make you feel really special to advertise that you're a nasty fucker?

I would probably punch someone who did that - I did the last time it happened (granted, we were 4 years old, it hasn't happened since but my reaction to that post is so strong, I probably still would.)

I get it when people are scared and can't move away from a spider in their own home, but out and about.. just get up and walk away fgs.

I rescued a tiny mouse in a local garden centre a few years back, several people were making a fuss and one huge arsehole of a bloke was trying to stamp on it, I said (probably fairly loudly) 'Hey, stop, I'll catch it' and he carried on so I rammed him in the shins with my wheelchair to stop him which he... didn't like very much. (Not my best moment but I didn't really think, just drove at him as he raised his foot again).

Took it to the on-site vets to be euthanised as it was pretty mullered by that point but clearly still alive and suffering.

You are a thousand times more of a Cunt for punching somebody than somebody is for killing a spider!!! Biscuit

DontTouchThat · 16/09/2022 20:55

Jesus how big was this spider 😮
Im terrified of the creepy wee buggers, if they come in they get the hoover. I wouldn’t kill one outside though, I just don’t want it lurking about my house.

You know they can & often do, crawl out of hoovers? Best thing to do is hoover up some ant powder immediately after. That kills spiders

Yes she is a dark brown/ orange colour and always sat in the centre of the web on the bushes in the garden and looks pretty big and beautiful.
Just like you described.

I'm trying to wrap my head around the sentence about the cockroaches.

The cockroach population of the UK is in the gajillions.

@jewishmum

Nar I like butterflies. Hate spiders though, I’ve killed a few in my lifetime. Usually by splatting them against the wall with a trainer, or sucking them up the hoover. Various methods to be honest.

The irony of your user name 😂

Shoxfordian · 17/09/2022 06:39

I don’t like spiders and I would rather there weren’t any in my house but I know there probably are. I used to be more scared of them than I am now though.

Op seems to have massively overreacted though, why do you care if a spider is killed? I don’t go out of my way to kill them but I do arrange their deaths via dh when necessary
