For shouting at a woman who was nudging a spider with her foot?

So I was in the mall, there was suddenly a commotion, people acting a bit elevated, enough for me to try to see what was going on.

I started walking over to a group of people, acting scared and some squealing. When I realised they were watching a woman from the group nudging and pushing a large Giant House Spider with her trainers on.

When I realised this, knowing how delicate their legs are, I loudly said "No! No, no ,no!" But she didn't hear and continued, so I started forwards and again loudly saying "no no no no!"

I scooped the spider up in my hands and put it in a nearby plant pot full of bamboo.

Looking back at where the group were, the woman was looking at me angrily, saying "I was just checking if it was alive, I wasn't gonna hurt it" pretty sure she swore about me.

Anyway I've been feeling rubbish about it and wanted an outsider's perspective.

Jesus how big was this spider 😮
Im terrified of the creepy wee buggers, if they come in they get the hoover. I wouldn’t kill one outside though, I just don’t want it lurking about my house.

I decided to get over my phobia

Oh piss off as if you 'just decide' to get over a phobia

You can if you actually want to?!

I was so scared I'd not be able to move. The last straw was when I was trapped in my bedroom because a great big one was over the doorframe. I ended up being late for work, crying because I was stuck for so long, then ended up dismantling the back of my wardrobe to use the back panel as a 'weapon' to squash it, which also took bloody ages to do, because I had to climb on my bed and lean over, and was trembling for the fear that I'd miss and it would be loose on the floor of my bedroom.

Seriously I saw how much of a hindrance on my life it was and joined some groups and worked very hard to overcome it. I also got drunk to get near one initially, but I don't recommend abusing alcohol for that purpose.

So let's get this straight- you used to kill spiders because you had a spider phobia, but now you no longer understand people having a spider phobia and are actually scared of the idea if a spider even being nudged? Sounds like you've exchanged one phobia for another. Maybe you need to attend some groups for people who have a phobia of spider-nudging...

Anyway - I am terrified of large spiders. I wouldn't kill one unless it were in my house and if dh weren't there to remove it unharmed though. And no, I'm not going to go to a spider group.

HebeSunshine · 16/09/2022 20:57

Good for you OP.
Of course you can get over phobias if you work at it.

MrsSkylerWhite · 16/09/2022 20:58

I probably would have done the same. Unfortunately, lots of people don’t realise just how crucial spiders are to us/the eco system.

Please don’t worry about it any more.

I did too. I was wondering why they'd put bamboo there.

It was a mall, a shopping centre, and there was a display of large plant pots with some kind of bamboo-like plants in.

The Mall usually means that lovely wide road by Buckingham Palace, to people in the UK. Free soft play gave it away.

ThickCutSteakChips · 16/09/2022 21:03

It's.....a spider? Confused

Confusedmama2 · 16/09/2022 21:03

Not sure why everyone is being so sarcastic :s I have been known to rescue bees in the street and run in to the road to save hedgehogs. You did a good thing, spiders are an important part of our ecosystem. I think peoples reaction to squash them is just out of fear, although I’m not sure why when they’re so tiny and we’re so big! Carry on saving those creepy crawlies OP!🕷

Dalaidramailama · 16/09/2022 20:15

I’d have been inclined to stamp on it as hard as I could just for fun to see your reaction

If anyone's unhinged it's you

How do you feel about the Sistine Chapel, @jewishmum ?

yeah, because the Sistine Chapel is obviously vital to the eco system.

RaRaRaspoutine · 16/09/2022 21:17

she tried to stomp upon a spider, I said no, no, no

YellowTreeHouse · 16/09/2022 21:19

Ha ha 😂 I would have happily stamped on it and crushed the thing.

Any I come across die whether I’m at home or out and about.

TwoLeftSocksWithHoles · 16/09/2022 21:19

I would have taken it to McDonald's and bought it a fly-flavour milkshake.
And then put a spun a story about it on the Web!

Topseyt123 · 16/09/2022 21:24

Mookie81 · 16/09/2022 20:28

I hate spiders so I'd have stamped on it, and if you'd yelled at me I'd have told you to bugger off!

So would I!

Idontdoyoga · 16/09/2022 21:30

I’m with you OP! WELL DONE.
I love spiders too.

Noteverybodylives · 16/09/2022 21:33

I hate when cowardly people kill spiders for no reason.
They are literally smaller than one of your hands.

I am not a massive fan of any creepy crawlies but I wouldn’t kill them as it’s completely unnecessary.

However it doesn’t sound like this person was trying to harm it and so the loud shouting was unnecessary and you could have just gone over and said you’ll remove it for them.

ScarlettnotOHara · 16/09/2022 21:34

What’s wrong with people stamping on spiders because they can ! 😞

MyneighbourisTotoro · 16/09/2022 21:35

😂😂😂

UWhatNow · 16/09/2022 21:36

Jeez there are going to be a lot of spiders squashed, crushed, hoovered and killed in the coming months. People put them outside not realising house spiders don’t do well outside the house. I’m sure the spider population will be ok. I think you need to get a grip op.

MyneighbourisTotoro · 16/09/2022 21:37

I personality think your reaction was way over the top, I’m all for rescuing bugs but she wasn’t going to stamp on by the sounds of it.

Pettyargument · 16/09/2022 21:42

YellowTreeHouse · 16/09/2022 21:19

Why would you stamp on spider when you are out an about? Maybe you should do some research on how important they are to the ecosystem ☹️

Mangledrake · 16/09/2022 21:42

I think if it happens again, you'll get a better reaction with, 'don't worry, I'll get it'. You must have sounded a bit aggressive. No harm done though, and one spider in a better place.
