Peapop777 · 15/09/2022 20:28

Why does Edward get to be in uniform after serving for 4 months lol
Harry 10 years, 2 tours of Afghanistan and no recognition!!!

HeddaGarbled · 15/09/2022 20:30

You know why.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/09/2022 20:30

Even I can answer that one!

Harry is not currently serving, nor is he a working royal, ergo, no uniform.

Welliesintherain · 15/09/2022 20:30

🥱

VladmirsPoutine · 15/09/2022 20:31

Because he chose to leave the fold methinks. From what I've read about their military histories only really Harry deserves to wear much if anything at all.

Zampa · 15/09/2022 20:31

Former soldiers aren't permitted to wear their old uniforms.

Sparklingbrook · 15/09/2022 20:32

I think this might have very recently been overturned.

mpsw · 15/09/2022 20:32

There have been quite a few threads about this already.

The short answer is that Edward hold honorary military positions (just like the King, the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal) so they all wear uniform.

Those that do not have those roles, nor were senior enough on retirement to qualify to wear uniform after leaving (which Harry was not), cannot wear uniform

No, that's not right, Andrew served for about the same amount of time, also flew helicopters on active operations.

Whatever the current opinions are about Andrew, he served HM in the Falklands and was often in great danger because of it, one of his roles was to draw enemy fire away from the warships.

Renalmum · 15/09/2022 20:40

Edward is Commodore-in-Chief of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, and the Royal Colonel of 2nd Battalion, The Rifles.

He is also an Honorary Air Commodore of Royal Air Force Waddington and a Royal Honorary Colonel of the London Regiment.

Harry gave up all his when he became a non working member of Royal Family.

Not the best news source admittedly.

OneFrenchEgg · 15/09/2022 20:42

Does anyone else think the uniforms and badges are a bit weird? Like dress up? (Not for those that actually served in positions, obv)

Peapop777 · 15/09/2022 20:44

@mpsw thank you for this info
I simply don't agree though, I'm maybe a bit bias as have 2 serving brothers currently and they are all saying the same atm although quietly

Harry was stripped of his military titles when he left the Royal family. Its protocol .
Why do you care so much?

Brefugee · 15/09/2022 20:45

I worked with people (army) who had flown with Andrew. And while he did serve down there, like Harry in Afghanistan, he wasn't in as much danger as most.

Andrew - is a problem for me when in uniform. As i understood he'd been sacked off from all military where he was CinC and suspended from all Royal duties by the queen, so therefore not currently entitled to wear the uniform either. It really sticks in the craw to see it, tbh

Delectable · 15/09/2022 20:55

Many people in the military are not happy about how Harry is being treated. The monarchy needs to be very careful. The media is acting like everyone is happy with the RF; it will be a shocker when the true picture can no longer be hidden.

I care because being stripped of royal duties doesn't mean he didn't serve.
Can you honestly write someone off because of who he is?

Bloody hell. I usually hate it when posters say this..... but there's been about 4000 threads in this in the last week. There's no need for another one. Plus, there's a Royal Family section.
So YABU to ask

Janesdufflecoat · 15/09/2022 20:58

Carol Vorderman is an Honorary Gp Capt as an Ambassador for the Air Cadets & prances around in the uniform like it's a themed stripper outfit so it's not just the Royal Family that get to play dress up in Military Uniform!

whoamI00 · 15/09/2022 21:00

Yawn.
It is reported that Harry will wear military uniform
End of discussion?

But if he wasn't senior enough on leaving the forces to be allowed to wear uniform then he is being treated the same as all the rest of his colleagues, surely?

Of course it doesn't mean he didn't serve!

But like everyone else who leaves below the rank of Lt Col or equivalent, there is no entitlement to wear uniform after retirement.

The only exceptions I can think of (as it's an offence to pass yourself off as an officer) are:

  • rank of Lt Col or higher in retirement, can wear uniform provided an 'R' badge is added (this is however considered a bit naff)
  • you become an actor and wear correct uniform as part of a performance
  • you hold an honorary military rank (you don't need ever to have served for this one, like Princess Anne)
  • you are a Field Marshal (technically, they never retire)
  • you are employed by the Royal Hospital Chelsea, and you wear their insignia in place of your former rank slides (permitted but unusual as the RHC has its own uniform)

The (unearned) medals are pathetic. I’m genuinely embarrassed for them. I’ve got a few I earned (nothing too exciting) but seeing Beatrice and Eugenie’s husbands wearing the jubilee medal just cheapened the whole thing. One of my colleagues commented on that, and they’ll never wear theirs. Don’t think I will, nor will my son. We all have others we’ve earned that isn’t given away for marrying someone’s grandchild.
