@mpsw thank you for this info
I simply don't agree though, I'm maybe a bit bias as have 2 serving brothers currently and they are all saying the same atm although quietly

“maybe a bit bias”

What does this mean? Do you mean biased?

I don’t think for a moment serving members would be disagreeing with this. It’s a rule.

blockpavingismynightmare · 15/09/2022 22:20

I am sure most people do not think any of the rest of them earned any of those medals they all love to wear anyway. Surely there is only Harry who has the right?

comfyshoes2022 · 15/09/2022 22:21

antelopevalley · 15/09/2022 21:33

Because mummy gave Edward medals, and daddy does not want Harry to wear his in public,
The rest is justifications. They do what they want to.

Bingo! Thank you! People are responding with all these rules and technicalities but missing the bigger picture: this is all ceremonial pageantry. The uniforms and medals are made up. They do what the king wants. The king doesn’t want Harry to wear his military uniform. That’s why Harry isn’t wearing his military uniform. (And IMO that’s a bad look on the king.)

But surely they're well aware of the rules about not wearing uniform after you have stopped serving?

TomBradysLeftKneecap · 15/09/2022 22:24

I personally think that stripping Harry of his military honors was actually quite cruel and inflamed already tense relations, especially as the Firm's popularity had arguably benefitted from his time serving and subsequent documentaries.

SueSaid · 15/09/2022 22:24

They are military rules. Folk who quit don't get to dress up as soldiers. Honorary titles are different and he doesn't have any.

If they are letting him do it fine but veterans will know it isn't right as indeed will Harry.

StoneofDestiny · 15/09/2022 22:25

You'd think you'd be embarrassed to wear a uniform and medals you'd not earned. However, the royals don't seem to be easily embarrassed.

MrsLargeEmbodied · 15/09/2022 22:27

surely Harry has been bad mouthing the RF, except the Queen - he has walked away from any duty

Froodledo · 15/09/2022 22:29

@antelopevalley "daddy does not want Harry to wear his in public,"

If you're referring to medals, what does Harry have on the left breast of his morning suit? Looks like medals, but I'm happy to be corrected.

I'm sorry if you were referring to something other than medals.

LondonWolf · 15/09/2022 22:30

You knew fine well what she meant 🙄

There have been quite a few threads about this already.

The short answer is that Edward hold honorary military positions (just like the King, the Prince of Wales and the Princess Royal) so they all wear uniform.

Those that do not have those roles, nor were senior enough on retirement to qualify to wear uniform after leaving (which Harry was not), cannot wear uniform

Utter nonsense though, isn't it, given Harry did 2 tours of Afganistan.
If anyone has a right to wear uniform amongst them it's him.
snorted slightly at the 'all the chocolate medals earned in 4 months' line.

SueSaid · 15/09/2022 22:39

'Utter nonsense though, isn't it, given Harry did 2 tours of Afganistan'

Lots of people have served in the military. Once you leave you don't keep the uniform.

WinnieTheW0rm · 15/09/2022 22:40

I am sure that if Harry were to return to public duties, he would receive honorary military appointments when suitable ones became available.

At present however, he does not wish that life, and the new king has spoken very clearly of his love for Harry and his family and best wishes for their life overseas.

Harry made his choices, and as he wants a non-royal life I think that should be respected

mpsw · 15/09/2022 22:44

No, that's Andrew. For he was in the Falklands War, and retired with the equivalent rank that permits the wearing of uniform after retirement.

EarringsandLipstick · 15/09/2022 20:30

Even I can answer that one!

Harry is not currently serving, nor is he a working royal, ergo, no uniform.

Sorry you're wrong he has served in the forces therefore has earned the right to wear the uniform.

I suspect MM was the most appropriate sort of person to marry into this family. They really do play parts in a giant pageant. They need a disciplined actress to sustain all the performing (melo)drama.

I would have been the most terrible member of RF ever, if so cursed. This whole charade, role-playing, prolonged public grieving on behalf of the nation. Usually when your loved ones dies, people rally around to give you space to come to terms in your own way, + long hours dealing with the admin. Members of RF have to go out on display on behalf of the nation. On repeat. King C is working harder than ever. The whole thing is utterly bizarre.

herecomesthsun · 15/09/2022 23:08

I think they changed it now and he does get to wear the uniform (according to twitter, I may be wrong Smile)

viques · 15/09/2022 23:11

I liked it when it was Philips funeral and they were all in civilian clothes, it made it about Philip and mourning him, not about how many bits of gold braid and shiny bits they wore. There will be enough uniforms from the serving military without the RF trying to out shine each other with purely ceremonial outfits (including wearing those ridiculous swords)

herecomesthsun · 15/09/2022 23:12

They - the Royals - actually planned it to be like this. They had options - quite a bit of the whizzing up and down the country seems to be a choice.

^Yes agreed.
I'm also no fan of andrew but he and Harry are the only royal with significant military service and they've been the only ones in suits.

RTFT

He is not entitled to do so. You need to have made it to Lt Col or equivalent to have the right to wear a version of uniform in retirement.

Harry did not make it to that rank.

Andrew did make it to the naval equivalent so did, as you put it, earn the right.

But as he's not doing so, I don't quite see why the less-qualified one would.

Sorry, you are wrong.
former soldiers do not have the right to wear uniform. Think of all the veterans you see marching every year on Remembrance Sunday - none of them are in uniform, are they?

Everyone seems to have forgotten that Charles served in both the Navy and RAF from 1971 to 1976.

Out of interest how senior do you have to be to wear your uniform?
There was a bloke on the news with his medals on his anorak...

Wants a non royal life but also wants his children called Prince and Princess - just as though he was a boxer married to a former glamour model 🙂. I can’t see real titles as opposed to names that are titles going down well in California.
