Do women really age worse than men?

CoalTit · 14/09/2022 17:10

I just read a novel where the protagonist thinks at one point how women age worse than men, and it took me back to a couple of boyfriends in the nineties saying that as if it were just something that everyone knows. I was really surprised that anyone would think the sex that goes bald ages better. Do any women think men age better than women?
YABU: yes, women age (physically) worse than men do.
YANBU: no, men as a class age just as badly as women.

It's funny, isn't it, that so often views like this are held by unattractive middle-aged men who think they are God's Gift to all women, but especially to young women between 18-25 in the possession of big tits.

Delatron · 15/09/2022 16:57

@Quincythequince the thread is about ageing differences between men and women. Loss of oestrogen is a huge contributing fact to this and this can start to have an impact in our early 40s versus men who don’t go through the same hormonal changes.

DixonD · 15/09/2022 16:57

Men definitely age better than women (generally). Perhaps it’s a biological or subconscious opinion based on biological facts - men continue to be useful (reproductively, and let’s be realistic that this is ALL that matters in nature) throughout their lives whereas women have served their (reproductive) purpose by 50.

It’s easy to see why so many middle aged men have affairs with younger women.

DixonD · 15/09/2022 16:58

I am a 40 year old woman by the way!

Penguins
62% of women (67% men) in their 50’s or older are extremely over weight or obese.
so no amount of expensive dentistry or haircuts or nice clothes can hide the bingo wings, canckles, stretch marks and cellulite.
There are lots of older men and women who look great and a huge number of both who look absolutely fucking dreadful

😂so true.

We’re going round in circles here.
I am well aware of what menopause and hormonal changes so to the body.

And yet not all women age badly, but all women go through menopause. My question to the poster to whom I initially responded, was clarity on other issues that were going on that she mentioned, as she wasn’t specific.

Someone else jumped in with the whole menopause thing. That is not what I was asking. I don’t know how many more ways I can explain this.

Quincythequince · 15/09/2022 17:31

I understand and acknowledge the importance of menopause, but you don’t just start to look like shit because of it.

PolarPolly27 · 15/09/2022 17:32

Many middle aged men are hideous especially the bald ones. Why would younger women look twice at them unless they're gold diggers?

Sallyingon · 15/09/2022 17:34

I am aging badly because of the menopause, my hair is thinning and my waist is thickening. Much more than outward appearances though, I feel v bad hormonely. I'd rather be a man. So I'm voting for men aging better.

I agree. I wouldn't say men generally age better than woman, I see A LOT of bad looking older men. However, a good looking 50 year old man will be more attractive/appealing than a good looking 50 year old woman, and it's easy to see why he would seek out younger women. The amount of people who are calling this misogyny is quite surprising, as I thought it was a fact of life.

Quincythequince · 15/09/2022 17:36

And blood tests in women are indicated if you aged less than 45 because it’s not a given that hormone levels have dropped substantially yet. Once passed 45, no blood tests are required if symptoms, especially vasomotor symptoms are reported.

These data (widely documented, not just my opinion) are the basis for my statements not typical in early forties, because it’s not. Doesn’t mean that some symptoms haven’t kicked in however, and that a small minority of women are seriously struggling.

laurwalsh · 15/09/2022 17:39

Check out Sienna Miller. The ultimately goal to aging

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 17:40

Where are all these beautiful older men?
Its a serious question.
Even male film stars age and look very different from how they did when they were at their peak.
Women (on the whole) put in far more effort because we live in a mysoginistic society whereby women are judged far more harshly than men.
Women put more effort into things such as wearing cream to protect their skin from wrinkles. Staying out of the sun to avoid skin damage. Spending time, effort, and money on their hair. Taking more care with their appearance and wearing clothes which make them look good. Denying themselves treats to keep their weight down. Keeping up with styles so they don’t look as old. Changing their choice of jewellery rather than just wearing the jewellery they have worn for the last 35 years. Using hand cream. Sorting their feet out so they don’t have acres of yellowing thick skin on their feet.
I think people walk around in cloud cookbook land quite frankly.
There have been endless threads on here about this. Think of all the couples you know who are the same age then think of all those where the man is so more attractive than the woman. You are not going to find that in the majority of cases the man is more attractive.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 17:42

Cuckoo not cookbook 😀

AllAloneInThisHouse · 15/09/2022 17:42

I don’t look much different.

Not a personal jab at you, but this what almost everyone thinks of themselves😁😉

TidesOfLife · 15/09/2022 17:45

I'm not sure if gender ages people. But I do think alcohol, smoking, drugs, too much sun, genetics and having a 'hard life' (whatever that may mean) are the top things.

Kashmirsilver · 15/09/2022 17:45

5128gap · 15/09/2022 16:41

Certainly not in my experience.
I genuinely don't know one man my age who looks good. They are all some, or all, of: overweight, bald, extremely sun damaged, badly dressed, in urgent need of dental work.
The women I know of the same age are considerably more youthful in body shape, skin condition, hair and dental quality, and much better dressed.
In addition, the women typically have way more energy, enthusiasm for life, complain far less about ailments and aren't snoring in front of the TV by 8pm.
Interestingly, in a recent picture I saw of the Queen and King Charles, taken before her health declined, i thought they could have been a couple rather than mother and son as they looked so similar in age, and I think that's fairly reflective of the general population after a certain age.

Are you and your friends Amazonians?🤣

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 17:46

I've read so many posts on here about how sexy Sean Connery was in his 50s-60s. Never heard that about a similarly aged woman.

Willyoujustbequiet · 15/09/2022 17:46

It's a complete myth rooted in misogyny.

I think the opposite is true as many women take better care of themselves.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 17:48

You are completely wrong about 50 year old men still reproducing. Biologically it is far better to breed with an 18 year old man than a 50 year old. The ideal age to breed for both sexes is the teenage years. If you are going to use a sperm donor then the younger the better. It’s only our society which frowns upon teenage pregnancy.
Using the ‘men can still breed at 50 and beyond’ argument, is like saying nature intends 11 year olds to have children because plenty of girls start their periods then.

Not among my friend group ( I’m 48). I can honestly say that my friends’ partners universally look worse than them, even the fit ones! Most are carrying too much weight, tbh, and their wives/partners aren’t.

Levellingdown · 15/09/2022 17:51

I used to work with a misogynist who delighted in telling people this all the time

No one beyond beyond their twenties has a 'youthful' body whatever they may choose to believe. I can't believe you were genuinely unable to see the vast differences between the Queen and King Charles. They were very clearly decades apart in age.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 17:53

Who says Sean Connery was sexy?
He was a wife beating twat. That’s putting it mildly.
He’s certainly not what I would call attractive.
Men and women find the same things attractive. Generally slim, nice eyes and teeth and a full head of shiny, bouncy hair.
Of course people grow old and there is far more to relationships than looks.

Because society and the media don’t find women over 50 sexy. Rubbish of course. Women over 50 can look just As sexy as men over 50.
