Do women really age worse than men?

CoalTit · 14/09/2022 17:10

I just read a novel where the protagonist thinks at one point how women age worse than men, and it took me back to a couple of boyfriends in the nineties saying that as if it were just something that everyone knows. I was really surprised that anyone would think the sex that goes bald ages better. Do any women think men age better than women?
YABU: yes, women age (physically) worse than men do.
YANBU: no, men as a class age just as badly as women.

Helen Mirren was definitely sexy in her 50’s. Liz Hurley isn’t exactly unattractive either.

DontTouchThat · 15/09/2022 17:59

I think women age much better than men, I’m gay through so maybe that skews my opinion 🤷‍♀️

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 17:59

Yes there was a thread on here where some posters were saying how there male oh looked so good. All older men, well over 40 sone over 50. Saying how they were as fit as 20 year olds and looked just as good.
No they don’t.
My son is early 20s and I can categorically tell you : your 50 year old husband would never be mistaken for my flat stomached son with his gorgeous full head of hair, sparkling eyes, great teeth and so on. You are deluded.

99.9 % of women don't look like either of those two.🤣

@Kashmirsilver Agreed. And 99.9% of men in their 50’s and 60’s aren’t sexy either! I’m struggling to think of one I know IRL. 😂

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 18:24

I'm amazed how much denial is on show here. Woman just don't look better at 40 than 20 unless they were fat or badly dressed etc when young. Lots of men do look better at 40 as they seem much more manly.

As posters said above, curves are seen as aesthetically pleasing in women and they start to slowly droop after our 20s. Men, however, can keep a firm body in their 50s and above with good training and nutrition.

There aren't many.
I spied a few handsome brothers who must've been mid 50's at the airport. There is the odd attractive woman. DP boss is great for her age.

And me.🤣🤣

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 18:28

The guy in the below picture is 74. You could swap his head with that of an attractive 40yo man and he'd look great. Now try and find me a 74yo woman with a comparatively good physique who you could swap out with a 40yo woman.

That's what I mean about men's physiques being more possible to maintain due to muscle mass

This thread is one giant case study of confirmation bias, in both directions. “All the men/women I know over 40 look awful yet their partners all look amazing.”

Yeah, sure.

Very true. The average ageing man in the street does not resemble George Clooney in the slightest. Having said that I do think it's down to misogyny; what's that saying, men age like fine wine and women age like milk? Completely rooted in misogyny.

Certainly not in my experience.
I genuinely don't know one man my age who looks good. They are all some, or all, of: overweight, bald, extremely sun damaged, badly dressed, in urgent need of dental work.
The women I know of the same age are considerably more youthful in body shape, skin condition, hair and dental quality, and much better dressed.
In addition, the women typically have way more energy, enthusiasm for life, complain far less about ailments and aren't snoring in front of the TV by 8pm.
Interestingly, in a recent picture I saw of the Queen and King Charles, taken before her health declined, i thought they could have been a couple rather than mother and son as they looked so similar in age, and I think that's fairly reflective of the general population after a certain age.

No one beyond beyond their twenties has a 'youthful' body whatever they may choose to believe. I can't believe you were genuinely unable to see the vast differences between the Queen and King Charles. They were very clearly decades apart in age.

Nonsense. There is no way you could possibly telk a 30s woman from a 20s woman on body shape alone and there's plenty of older women with youthful body shapes. There are a handful of men too but far fewer than women.
I think people who say this are judging by their own narrow experience of themselves and their peers, and possibly underestimating the age of some of the youthful looking women they see out and about.

iloveeverykindofcat · 15/09/2022 18:57

Well I guess I'm deluded then because I think I look better in my thirties than I did in my twenties. I didn't do any real exercise in my twenties and I had a worse diet. Then I started getting a lot of back pain, so now I do. I know quite a few women who got fit in their thirties.

PolarPolly27 · 15/09/2022 18:57

Nowhere did I mention body shape alone. It's perfectly possible to distinguish between women in their twenties and thirties. No older women have 'youthful' body shapes, except in their imagination. Many people choose to ignore the signs of ageing to delude themselves.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 19:07

tokidok without being rude have you seen that guys face?
He isn’t attractive at all. He may well be a really nice person but seriously? I don’t know anyone (female) who would say he is gorgeous he is far too big for a start not slim and not attractive.
Are you a man? I think men seem to think women find big muscly men attractive even if old and bald. He looks like an old man. Well done to him for working out but do I find him attractive? No. Does he compare to a young man? No. Young men tend to be slim, he isn’t.
I accept not all young men are slim and good looking.
Would you find a 74 year old woman who looked like that attractive?

I dunno like, women could look like the equivalent if they put the work in, for many reasons most don’t. This woman pictured is 80.

Jillian Michaels is almost 50 and has a body of any 20 something.

The guy's pumped full of steroids. Just thinking about the state of his internal organs makes me feel nauseous.

No, you said no one outside of their 20s has a youthful body shape. I said that was nonsense as there would be little if any difference between a 20s and 30s women's body shape all other things being equal.
Theres no point in arguing with you. If you've never been to a gym and seen some of the bodies older women have from training, never seen a woman who looks 20 years younger from the back, and have your own reasons for believing they don't exist, I won't convince you otherwise.

Penguinsaregreat · 15/09/2022 19:13

Octomore · 15/09/2022 19:13

smooththecat · 14/09/2022 17:12

Men age just as badly as women do. Qualities that signify youth are more highly prized in women than they are in men.

This.

Also, the middle aged and older women I know tend to look after themselves much better than the men, so they often look better (healthier) IMO.

Hence my comment about being able to swap his head with that of a 40yo. The sort of woman who fancies Vin Diesel etc would be attracted to that body type.

She looks a bit muscley to me, although admittedly in great shape for her age.

No woman of 70+ has a Scarlet Johansson body but men can have a Vin Diesel body. That's my point. It's the different cultural aesthetics.

Nsmum14 · 15/09/2022 19:27

When you look at other mammals, they age the same. Surely it would be similar for humans?

Redorblues · 15/09/2022 19:28

Cosmetic procedures aside, it's all down to bone structure and skin texture. Unless you've been a prolific sun worshipper or lifelong drug addict you'll always look pretty good if you're within a healthy weight range and have certain genetic predispositions

I can see what you're saying in terms of bodies, but no 70+ year old will have a youthful face, and faces are just as important to physical attractiveness. Also, I assume this man is the exception rather than the rule. I doubt many 70+ year old men would have the energy/physical capability to achieve a body like that without steroids at least.

TokidokiBarbie · 15/09/2022 19:29

Basically, the only thing that can fight the gravity effect is gaining muscle to tighten skin up. This works with women to a good degree but our cultural ideas of attractiveness allow a man to have much more muscle before being seen as a bit gross.
