For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

🙄 no way my three year old is going to shoot and watch hours of television, he won't want to and I don't allow it. She died, it's sad, people need to stop telling others what to do.

I've never once thought about asking what my parents were doing when the queen was crowned, or for her father's funeral. I can't imagine any potential grandchildren giving a single stuff what I did for her funeral.

That’s pretty sad to me but then I love history.
This isn’t just another queen or king on the throne for 10/20 years though is it?
This is likely to be the longest reigning monarch there has or ever will be. She will likely be in the history books for the next 1000 years and will stand out amongst many others.
To me it’s the end of an era as I think we are in for a change of times going forward.
I personally want my kids to recognise the significance and be able to remember and talk about this time later in their lives.

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

PMSL.

Thank goodness for people like you who will be able to tell their grandchildren all about the day they sat in front of the telly.

Why would you not want to involve your kids in this moment of history???? I find that odd, all schools will be talking about it, watch it with your children !

My thoughts exactly

dingbat56 · 13/09/2022 17:11

We are near enough to Windsor to consider going to the Long Walk … as a moment of history I think it’s worth going with our young teens .. but the logistics are probably going to be hellish

I won’t be in front of the telly dear.

There will be people gawping through their nets, checking up on who isn't watching the telly and going out instead

Chaotica · 13/09/2022 17:10

Haha. That is where my parents took us when Charles married Diana.

Best place to come if you want to avoid royal nonsense :)

MNCar · 13/09/2022 17:12

I’m planning on working. My husband is off. We don’t need us both off. Grateful for the day off in lieu to use at Christmas when school breaks up and hubby working.

Dont need to watch the funeral in full and feel further depressed. Have my own grief I’m still battling with. My children can catch it on the news if they want. I’d rather they spent the day doing something more fun and bonding as a family tbh.

You think it won’t! Wow. It is incredibly disappointing to me how little people care about history and how it shapes the world we live in today. How little parents value sharing our history with their children. We have such a huge wealth of historical places to visit and so much to learn, yet people just arnt bothered. So disappointing.

I spend nearly every weekend at either a National Trust place, Longleat House , museum or a large body of water of some sort. My 3 year old is going to get nothing from Monday except asking me to go to places that are shut.

If he asks when he is older (and it tends to be that people ask where you were when you were told of an event - I know where I was when Diana died, no idea for the funeral) I'll tell him we watched it.

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:32

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

LOL the poster has already said she doesn't want to... it isn't compulsory

I have no idea what my parents were doing when the old King died. As for his funeral, well seeing as T.V's were not common place I doubt they watched it either.

My office. It will be fun but not suitable for children.

😂😂 I'm sure historians would be fascinated to know what my parents were doing when the queen was crowned...

Its not a question of hating anyone but if you really want to turn someone off from having an interest in something, force them to do it! this applies especially to children.

That is what the Govt/BBC/Centre parcs et al and people like you are doing..

People have or should have free will and can do, within the bounds of the law, whatever they like.

But the constant 24/7 coverage, the pointless anecdotes dragged out from various lords and ladies, who you will hear off again, the gloomy music, there is no really choice, its being rammed down our throats.

I think that after 70 years as Queen and at 96yo, we should all be having a party to celebrate her life, not living in the 12th century.

GaffNest · 13/09/2022 17:18

NovaDeltas · 13/09/2022 15:41

Why would a child want to watch a stranger's funeral? I suspect no one under 30 or frankly 40 will be remotely bothered.

The viewing figures will say otherwise.

Diana’s funeral got 31.10 million viewers, circa half the UK populous, which was the 2nd most watched television broadcast after the 1966 World Cup final.

Good for you, have a lovely day out, however I'm not traipsing two kids up to London so the options are a. Sit in front of the telly or b. Do something more interesting instead (to coin a phrase). If they are cursing me 40 years hence I will sincerely apologise.

Devo1818 · 13/09/2022 17:18

We're going for a big day out Sunday instead, then duvet day on the sofa on Monday watching films and baking (and doing the usual Sunday stuff of getting ready for the week ahead, but on Monday)

garlictwist · 13/09/2022 17:19

Is anyone else's work not giving them the bank holiday? Mine isn't (a university) Can't say I blame them as it's very short notice and we have lots of freshers' stuff that day.

Floofboopsnootandbork · 13/09/2022 17:20

Alot of people I know are being forced to take the day off and have to chose between unpaid or using annual leave, why shouldn’t they be allowed to use the day to do something that they’ll actually enjoy seeing as they have no choice about it. Not everyone wants to watch the funeral, I know I won’t be. I’m working the night before so will be sleeping until the early afternoon then it’s my partner’s birthday so I’ll be making his day special instead.

BigHoots · 13/09/2022 17:21

I won’t be watching the queens funeral either but fully expect everything will be closed. Nice walk, trip to the beach or gardening/diy?

Alwaystired99 · 13/09/2022 17:21

I don't think Charlie Brooker could write any more Black Mirror as we seem to be living in it.
