For those of us lucky enough to have the day off with our kids, who don't want to watch the funeral. I would love to hear anyone's idea of how to make the most of a bonus day off. In particular if you know of anything fun that's open.

I'd prefer not to spend the day in the local park, have done that enough in the past 2 years. The only thing I've seen that's open so far is Hawksmoor which is a bit fancy for a family day!

My local pub is very sensibly opening at 13.00.
Seems a good compromise .

Emmelina · 13/09/2022 17:22

Although it’s a big part of history, I know my own children will be bored to tears watching all the ceremonial stuff. We’re planning on a board game day!

carmenitapink · 13/09/2022 17:13

LOL the poster has already said she doesn't want to... it isn't compulsory

Something tells me you might be taking @LetMeSpeak too seriously @carmenitapink. I don't know why, it's just her username is a catchphrase of Nigel Farage. Whoosh!

The viewing figures will say otherwise.

Diana’s funeral got 31.10 million viewers, circa half the UK populous, which was the 2nd most watched television broadcast after the 1966 World Cup final.

en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_most_watched_television_broadcasts_in_the_United_Kingdom#Most_watched_special_events

When Diana died streaming and the internet did not exist. I was on a ferry on the day travelling back from a holiday.

Hospitality is open. Might arrange to meet up with some friends for breakfast in a pub and then go a walk. No idea if I will get the teenagers to get up for it. But they have internet and streaming.

Why would you not want to involve your kids in this moment of history???? I find that odd, all schools will be talking about it, watch it with your children !

And I find it odd that you can't see another point of view. I'm a Republican and will not be having the TV on for the funeral. My teens feel the same and DS3 10 is not bothered about watching a funeral of someone he didn't know in the slightest. People have other points of view than you.

There are many on here that would so well to remember that. Watch the funeral, show your respect, but respect others that don't want to without calling them odd.

limitedperiodonly · 13/09/2022 17:26

We'll have the telly on in the office and wine and pizza when the main event is over if anyone is tempted. It's still not suitable for children though.

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 17:04

You think it won’t! Wow. It is incredibly disappointing to me how little people care about history and how it shapes the world we live in today. How little parents value sharing our history with their children. We have such a huge wealth of historical places to visit and so much to learn, yet people just arnt bothered. So disappointing.

Well, if the OP wanted to spend the day taking her kids to a castle, she couldn't because its shut.

Yes i love history too but modern history, the stuff that happened centuries ago has little or no bearing on real lives.

Things like the reformation are meaningless in our secular society but modern European history gets airbrushed out in favour of the Dooms Day book etc.

As i said, people like you ramming the death of a 96yo down our throats will do more to alienate people from the RF & history than any republican could dream of.

Zippy1510 · 13/09/2022 17:26

Our local softplay is open. We will probably head there.

PupInAPram · 13/09/2022 17:27

When Charles married Diana I went out in a rowboat with my boyfriend. Missed the wedding entirely. It was a wonderful day 🤣

LetMeSpeak · 13/09/2022 15:32

The day should be used to watch the Queens funeral. Nothing will/should be open in respect of the late Queen. I would recommend you stay home and watch the funeral and maybe go to the park after.

Can't tell if you're being serious.

Superbabe64 · 13/09/2022 17:28

@LetMeSpeak
I have no intention or desire to watch the funeral and would rather go to work and since I am a long distance road cyclist I shall be taking advantage of the quiet roads. 😉

mmmflakycrust81 · 13/09/2022 17:29

Is the funeral all day then?

Are we not allowed to do anything else even if we watch the funeral? Because absolutely everything is closed.

Its like a really, really depressing christmas day.

Are you bloody joking?
The whole thing is a total waste of money.

It's absolutely my choice not to watch it and treat the day as a holiday.

Beezknees · 13/09/2022 17:30

I do not respect the royals. The queen paid her sexually abusive son's legal bills to silence his victim. I will not be watching the funeral. I'll let my DC watch it if they want but they're a teen so more interested in their friends and their phone.

My school is barely talking about it actually.
Thank god.

I've recently had a family bereavement, and I don't think I can cope with watching the funeral so I will be going out for a long walk I think.

I understand it's history etc but it's not something I want to watch right now so will be doing something else.

Same here. I’m not taking kindly at all to people barking here that you MUST watch a funeral. My mum died recently, I don’t want to watch a funeral right now. I’m very sorry for your loss.

Blankscreen · 13/09/2022 17:32

I'm not watching the funeral. Tbh I am so bored of all the commentary constantly.

I have DC ages 9 and 12. We can watch a 10/20 minute snip on our smart TV and be done.

I don't need my whole day to revolve around watching hours and hours of it.

Think I will head out for a bike ride with them and hopefully enjoy the peace.

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 17:32

Alexandra2001 · 13/09/2022 17:17

Its not a question of hating anyone but if you really want to turn someone off from having an interest in something, force them to do it! this applies especially to children.

That is what the Govt/BBC/Centre parcs et al and people like you are doing..

People have or should have free will and can do, within the bounds of the law, whatever they like.

But the constant 24/7 coverage, the pointless anecdotes dragged out from various lords and ladies, who you will hear off again, the gloomy music, there is no really choice, its being rammed down our throats.

I think that after 70 years as Queen and at 96yo, we should all be having a party to celebrate her life, not living in the 12th century.

I’m not saying to force anyone.
Fostering an interest (even just some basic knowledge) in history is important. Watching this historic even for even just 20 mins and discussing the historical significance in some way Or even what good the queen has done over her 70 year rein / important people she has met and influences she has had for good. The kids would have been in school learning. They have been given the day off school for a reason and that isn’t to have a jolly up.
Obviously it’s up to individual parents but I believe every parent has the duty to teach children history and give them learning experiences outside of school. We visit NT’s all the time for this very reason learning about past kings and queens / prime ministers and people who shaped the country we live in today. Now we are living through a historic moment. It’s not just another weekend day, they have been given a day off due to a funeral.

Pinkdelight3 · 13/09/2022 15:45

This must be a parody of royalist pomposity, right?

I work for myself from home so will be working all day as usual, but I'm meant to have a meeting in the pub that night. Are most pubs still opening (in the spirit of a wake at least) or having to close up, do we know?

£5 on parody.

Cheguevarahamster · 13/09/2022 17:32

I think very few things are open - I'll be avoiding the TV and probably go for a walk with my teens. Celebrating one teens birthday. Would normally get the train into central London (for said walk) but I will be avoiding the crowds. A board game day sounds like a good shout.

MotherWol · 13/09/2022 17:32

Pinkpeony2 · 13/09/2022 17:00

Exactly.
20/30/40 years time.
’What did we do Mum on the day of Queen Elizabeth’s Funeral? Did we watch it on TV? Tell me what the day was like’
’Went to the swings dear. Because I hated the Queen’
70 years time when the queen has been off the throne as long as she was on it:
’Grandma, I can’t believe you were actually alive when Queen Elizabeth was alive. Wow what did you do on the day of her funeral?’
’We went to the playground my dear. Because my mother hated the Queen’

😆 "We went to the playground dear. Because you were two, and would only sit still for Hey Duggee."

crosbystillsandmash · 13/09/2022 17:33

Canany1cme · 13/09/2022 15:49

Your poor kids. The eyes of the World on the UK and you decide to…take them to a play park.

Like it or not the Queen was our Head of State and her death and funeral are historic events. Why would you not want your DC to learn about the country they live in?

Because I've raised them to despise the monarchy and everything they stand for.

They hunt and shield sexual predators. Hardly my type of people.

KassandraOfSparta · 13/09/2022 17:33

Geocaching? We will watch the funeral, and do that in hte afternoon.

antelopevalley · 13/09/2022 17:33

GaffNest · 13/09/2022 17:29

Why assume she is lying? I wasn't watching it on TV either.
